Chapter 61
NATHAN
"Why didn't you answer me? You could have at least responded to the damn messages."
"I was busy," she says calmly as she sits down, making me even more irritated.
"And your friend?"
"It's all right."
"What did you tell her?"
"The truth. What else?"
"Did you tell her about us?"
"Everything."
"Why?"
"She's my friend, Ryan. Don't worry. She won't tell anyone, and I didn't have a good enough excuse to explain the fact that I was almost having sex with my boss in our kitchen." It would have been really hard to explain. But why did we need to explain anything to anyone?
"What did she say?"
"Nothing. Just tried to warn me about the possible jerk that I already know you are."
"I hope she doesn't get involved in this. We don't owe anyone an explanation. Remember that."
"Okay."
"No, it's not okay. I want you in my office now." I go to the door, opening it. I can't decipher her expression as she stands up and walks past me. I loved her perfume. I close the door behind me, watching her sit down, and I walk over to her, leaning against the table beside her.
"You can't do this."
"What?" I couldn't read her expression, nor imagine what she was thinking.
"Don't be ridiculous. You know what I'm talking about."
I just wanted to lay her on my desk and taste her until I got tired and then sink into her.
"We shouldn't talk about this here. Consider it a new rule of this stupid agreement. It's indispensable to me."
"You want to treat it like this? Fine. You can leave." She rolls her eyes.
"Do you always have to make a war out of everything?"
She stands up, takes a step forward, and stands in front of me. She puts her hands on my chest. "Do you think I didn't want to? I get wet just by being close to you." She whispers, and I have to hold back from grabbing her. Which becomes even more impossible when she kisses me.
Then she pulls away and leaves. This was cruel. She needed to decide between being a bitch or being hot. The combination was going to end up killing me. It was a test. She drove me crazy every minute I couldn't touch her.
KATE
A lady comes in, accompanied by Ryan's jack-of-all-trades. I still didn't know what James' exact position was, security? Driver? Jack-of-all-trades applied better, to me.
"Okay, James. Thank you," she was strangely familiar. The features resembled Ryan's a lot. Blonde hair tied in a low bun, beautiful green eyes, and impeccable posture. Her face had a kind expression.
"Good morning!" I say as I stand up. "Do you have an appointment, ma'am?"
"I'm sorry. I asked not to be announced. I wanted to surprise him. It's almost impossible to see your own son without having to schedule a meeting." She smiles. She's his mother. God!
"Are you Mrs. Ryan?" I blink. Pathetic Collins! Stop acting like a moron.
"Just Loren, dear! It's a pleasure!"
"The pleasure is mine! I'm sorry, I didn't know..."
"No problem, dear. I know my son well. He certainly doesn't have a picture of me in the office." He didn't indeed. She was so young and her energy was wonderful.
"I understand. Let me show you in." I walk around the table and head to his door, opening it. He'll love the surprise, besides, it's his mother.
"Thank you," She says as I open the door to let her in. I would give anything to see Ryan now. One thing I know for sure, he didn't take after his mother, at least in appearance.
A good while later, Nathan opens the door for his mother and they both exit. I feel like laughing, but I don't. It was... cute?
"We'll wait for you. I hope you don't come up with an excuse."
"Okay. I already said I'm going," he replies, his gaze settling on me.
"You know, if I had told you, you wouldn't have let me come," she says to him.
"Right. Okay, but let me know next time."
"It was a surprise, son."
"Okay, Mom."
Well, they are funny. Nathan didn't seem like the type of son who displays affection all the time. But I could see the love and adoration in his eyes. Mrs. Ryan looks at me.
"By the way, I really liked this girl here. But I still don't know her name. What's your name, dear?"
I stand up. "Katherine."
"I think you're the one taking care of my son around here. Thank you. Seeing you makes me feel more at ease," she says, nodding. God! If she only knew! I look at Nathan behind her, who is grinning foolishly. Jerk. Don't make me laugh.
"I think it would be wonderful if you joined us for dinner tonight. Don't you think so, Nathan?"
"What?" He can't help but look surprised. Control yourself, Ryan. He clears his throat. "I mean... Sure."
"Well, dear, can I count on your presence?" Mrs. Ryan still looks at me with a slight smile on her face.
"I..." I can't accept it. It would be too much. She still looks at me expectantly.
"Accept, Collins. You don't have to be afraid, my family has nothing to do with me."
"Nathan!" She scolds him. "My son can be stubborn sometimes, but he has a good heart." She smiles at me. Does he have a heart? I didn't know that.
"Okay. I'll be there. Thank you for the invitation."
"Great! Well, dear, see you tonight."
"See you soon, Mrs. Ryan."
"Nathan, don't be late."
"Okay. Got it." He accompanies her to the elevator, leaning in to give her a goodbye kiss on the cheek. The scene amazes me. Then he comes back and stands in front of me.
"You can laugh now."
"Why would I laugh?" I contain a smile.
"You were holding back. I know it."
"Ryan shouldn't have been deceiving his mother all these years. She thinks you have a heart, she'll be devastated when she finds out the truth," I say, laughing.
"Very funny," he smiles.
But now I'm worried about the dinner. I shouldn't go, I shouldn't have accepted.
"Do you think I should go?"
"I would go if I were you. For your own good."
"Why?"
"You made a good first impression and told her you were going. It's better not to offend Loren."
"You mean, your mother?"
"Yeah."
"So, call her that. Anyway, it's completely ridiculous to go to dinner with your family."
"You accepted."
"'Accept, Collins' is what you said. I was about to decline!"
"I thought you were having a panic attack. You went silent."
"What did you want me to do?"
"Okay, Collins. Just don't make it obvious that I'm fucking you."
"You asshole." How can he say those things, especially with a smile? "Stop laughing."
"I think we're doing well. You're even going to meet my family tonight." He approaches, holding my chin as if he's going to kiss me. Then, as if he remembers our agreement, he turns and walks towards his office, while my legs go weak. Shit.
I shouldn't have agreed. What's going to happen? Relax, Collins! It's just a dinner. No one knows about us. Just pretend you're just the assistant.
