Chapter 123
KATE
"Shit," Nathan muttered, pulling up his pants. "It must be urgent." He kissed my forehead. Taking a deep breath and running his hand through his hair, he walked to the door and opened it slightly, so James couldn't see me.
"Yes?" Nathan said. His tone of annoyance was evident.
"Sorry, Mr. Ryan. I tried to call you, but..."
"Yeah, yeah, I think I left my phone in the office. What's the matter?"
"They said it's urgent, someone is waiting on the phone. Something about a fire."
"Right... I'll be there in a minute." He closed the door.
"Fire?" I asked as soon as his eyes landed on me.
"I'm sorry, I have to check that out now."
"Sure, it's okay."
He left shortly after, leaving me alone. Damn it. I felt so selfish for not wanting him to go. I was so turned on, but whatever it was that he had to attend to must have been more important than sex. And I hated the fact that there was something more important than us, than me.
Damn it. I tried to breathe and control myself, thinking about touching myself. But that's not what I wanted or needed. Hell. I got up, closing my robe. I headed to his office.
James was in the living room. Waiting for some orders, I suppose.
"Miss Collins," he greeted me as he noticed my presence. I instantly blushed, imagining that he might have heard what we were doing in the bedroom. "Hello, James. Is he in the office?" I asked awkwardly.
"Yes, miss."
I entered the office. Nathan was still on the phone. I stood leaning against the desk, arms crossed. He was near the windows when his gaze met mine.
"We have to figure out how this happened... make sure those responsible are waiting when I arrive. Alright. See you soon."
See you soon? He's leaving? That's what I wanted to ask, but it seemed completely insensitive. "Is everything okay? Any problem?"
"Not here. In Tokyo."
Damn it. It had to be a joke. I was still processing the idea that he was leaving now. But Tokyo? That was too much.
"What happened?"
"A fire at a factory that will cost a lot," He approached, caressing my face. "I'm sorry, I have to deal with this."
"You're traveling? Now?"
"You know how these things go. They could handle it with my orders, but I need to sign the paperwork and give some scolding."
"Alright." No. It wasn't alright.
"It's a shame... I wanted to finish what we started." He kissed the corner of my mouth.
"Ten minutes. I know you can do it, we just need that." I slid my fingers along his stomach, to the waistband of his pants.
"Damn it." He squeezed his eyes shut. "Baby, I only have ten minutes to take a shower and get ready. I've asked James to arrange a helicopter to take me to the airstrip to catch the jet."
"Okay..." I tried to hide my disappointment, but I think I failed miserably.
"I'll make it up to you when I come back, beautiful. I'm sorry."
"Sure. You better go." I couldn't help but feel irritated by it. I wanted to be understanding, but it seemed impossible.
"Alright." He kissed me on the lips and forehead before leaving.
Tokyo? Life was trying to screw with me. He wouldn't be back for two days, or even more than that. It was about a twelve or thirteen-hour trip, just one way. I had to get used to it now that we were truly taking this further. He would always be traveling.
Lying on the couch in the immense living room, I looked through the windows at the lights shining in the skyscrapers of New York during the early morning hours. Somewhere out there, there was probably a couple making passionate love, living normal lives that didn't involve late-night travels.
I heard his footsteps as he approached. He had already taken a shower and only brought a carry-on bag with him.
"Will you be alright?" He stood by the side of the couch.
"Yes... I'll go back home."
"I want you to stay here."
"This isn't my home."
"It's a request. Stay until I come back."
"Why?"
"I'll feel like you'll be safer."
"You mean watched over?"
"We won't argue... do it for me, okay? I have to go. I'll do everything to come back as soon as possible. I promise." He put the bag on the floor and walked around the couch. Leaning over me, he held my chin before kissing me softly. "Promise you'll stay."
"Don't forget that I work, Nathan."
"Yes. But come back here when you're done."
"Alright, I guess so."
"Kate?"
"Okay."
"See you when I get back, beautiful."
"Bye."
I didn't feel like saying goodbye at that moment, and maybe I would regret it later.
He was gone, and I had a long Sunday ahead. Thankfully, I had plans to have lunch with my father. Damn it, I barely got to celebrate my birthday with Nat, and I hadn't satisfied my longing for him after being separated for so long, but now we were apart again.
