Chapter 121

KATE

When I returned from my room with some clothes, he was reading the note that came with the flowers sent by John.

"What does this mean?" He stared at me, perplexed.

"He was just being kind..."

" 'Congratulations... I miss you. I hope to see you soon,' " he read with a tone of disdain.

"We have nothing, Nathan, you know that."

"Fine. I'll throw them in the trash for you."

"No."

"No?" He looked at me with wide eyes.

"They're mine, and they're just a gesture of kindness. I'm not ungrateful."

"We're together, Collins. I don't want to see you receiving flowers from anyone."

"Fine. We are, but we weren't before, so it still wasn't your concern, so leave them alone."

"This is ridiculous... That guy is a jerk."

"And you're pathetic with jealousy."

"Let's go. I don't want to argue with you right now."

"Great. Let's go, I'm exhausted."

We arrived at his apartment, and I wasted no time in going to take a shower, letting Nathan know beforehand. I needed to sleep urgently. When I finished the shower, feeling drowsy, I managed to put on only a pair of panties before lying down.

My phone rang on the nightstand; it was only three-forty in the morning. I had slept for just over an hour. Who the hell would be calling me at this hour?

It was my father.

"Dad?"

"Hi, sweetheart. Did I wake you?"

"Yes, but it doesn't matter. Is something wrong?"

"No, my dear, I just wanted to make sure you were okay. You said you were going out with some friends, I was just worried. Sorry for waking you up."

"Don't worry, I'm fine. Thanks for calling, but you should be sleeping. See you at lunch, then?"

"Yes, dear. Goodnight!"

"Goodnight. Love you."

"Love you too."

I needed to enjoy more time with my father while he was here. It had been a long time since there had been anyone around to care about me like that. Lisa was a great friend, but I always had to be the responsible one between the two of us.

I tried to go back to sleep, but I couldn't after noticing that his side of the bed was still made. He hadn't even laid down.

I decided to look for him. I walked down the hallway; he wasn't in the kitchen or the living room. Was he working at this hour?

I opened the door to the office, and Nathan widened his eyes at me.

"Damn it, Collins!"

Was he angry? Only then did I see Stephan. He waved at me, smiling, sitting in an armchair. With a quick movement, Nathan was already in front of me, blocking his view.

"Don't you have any common sense?" he asked.

"Sorry."

I blushed like a tomato and, at the same time, tried not to laugh at the situation. Stephan couldn't contain himself and burst into laughter.

"What are you laughing at, idiot?" Nathan asked without looking at his brother, pushing me out.

"Sorry, I didn't think there was anyone here at this hour."

I tried to contain my laughter.

"It's okay. But for God's sake, go put something on."

He was upset, and I was, like Stephan, finding the situation amusing. I didn't mind Stephan seeing my breasts; my feelings for him were almost fraternal, but of course, Nathan didn't feel the same way. The funniest part of the situation was his reaction.

"Sure."

I lazily walked back to the room, laughing.

I was hungry. After putting on a robe, I returned to the kitchen, looking for something to eat in the fridge.

Stephan and Nathan came out of the office a while later.

Stephan approached smiling and leaned over the table at the opposite end of mine.

"Are you okay?"

"Great, thanks. And you?"

"I have a question."

"What?" He was smiling from ear to ear. Nathan stood a little behind him, fiddling with his phone. Stephan made a gesture with his hand, indicating his chest.

"Are they real?" he asked, smiling.

"I think it's your turn," Nathan said, touching his shoulder.

"What's up, Ryan? So, Kate?"

"Your brother can answer that," I said, trying to contain my laughter. Nathan gave me a reproachful look, asking me not to encourage Stephan to pester him.

"Come on, I'll walk him out." He said, accompanying Stephan to the elevator.

"You're a great host, Nat."

"And you're a great idiot. See you later."

I heard the elevator doors open.

"Bye!" Stephan said, bidding farewell.

I was curious. What was Stephan doing here at this hour? I sat on the table.

"Did you get rid of him?" I asked, looking at him over my shoulder.

"Yep." He opened the fridge to get some water.

"Why was he here at this hour?"

"To see your boobs?" He furrowed his brow before taking a sip of water.

"I told you I didn't know there was anyone here besides us."

"We're never alone, Kate. There's always someone here working."

"Well, I never see anyone."

"What are you eating?"

"I found some sweets in your fridge."

"At this hour?"

I rolled my eyes at him.

"You need to take better care of your diet."

"Blah blah..." I retorted, and he gave me another disapproving look before approaching me.

"Always so insolent. Why?" His eyes stared at me attentively, and his hands rested on the table, one on each side of my thighs.

"Maybe the problem is you."

"Me?"

"Always trying to be my father."

He fell silent, seeming to ponder.

"What's wrong?"

"I'm trying to imagine how I'm going to explain the lie about being Kent to your father."

"That's not the worst part. You were my boss at the time."

"I'll think of something for that too. We didn't have much time together on your birthday; maybe we can extend it to today."

"I have to have lunch with my dad today."

"I understand. Wait here a second."

"Why?"

He went towards his office and returned shortly with a small black velvet box.

"I thought I wouldn't have the opportunity to give this to you... but I'm glad you're here." He said, handing it to me.

"What is it?"

"Open it."

I untied the delicate silver bow that wrapped the box and opened it. It was a necklace, simply beautiful and enchanting, extremely delicate, made with diamonds. It was definitely worth a fortune, and it bothered me deep down. He was expecting a reaction from me.

"It's beautiful..."

"But?"

"It's excessive, it's like you're giving me a car or even an apartment."

"Does it offend you? That wasn't the intention. I thought you would like it."

"I just want you to know that you don't need to buy something like this for me."

"But I want to. I want to give you the world if I can."

Ryan being romantic was extremely strange, but it melted my heart.

"I just want this..." I placed my hand on his chest, over his heart. He held my face in his hands and kissed me, a slow, lingering, and careful kiss.

"Now let me put it on you." He helped me down from the table and took the necklace out of the box.

I turned around, holding my hair, and he put it on.

"So... how does it look?" I turned to face him.

"Beautiful, but it can look even better." He said, his eyes sparkling with a seductive energy. What did he mean?
