Chapter 149
KATE
He returned to the room about ten minutes later. I took the opportunity to search for my phone, check my messages, and also send a threatening message to Lisa and Mary. I wouldn't let them know yet how wonderful the gift had been, in a way.
"Ready?" He looked at me, standing in the doorway.
"Yes."
I left my phone on the nightstand and crawled to the edge of the bed.
"Do you need help?" he asked.
I wanted to wipe that smirk off his face.
"Well, I think my legs still work. Thanks."
"You think?"
"Don't be so presumptuous."
"I won't argue, Collins. It's just necessary to look at you," he said before entering the bathroom.
"You know how to compliment a woman."
I followed him. He turned off the water in the hot tub, which was already full.
"What I did to you was much better than complimenting, don't you think?"
"You managed to exhaust me enough to not want to argue, so you must be right."
He got into the tub and then reached out to help me. The water felt divine. I waited for him to sit down and did the same, then he pulled me close with my back against his chest.
"When I fall asleep, make sure I don't drown," I joked.
But it really wouldn't last long; it was so relaxing.
"Rest, baby." He kissed my shoulder.
I realized that another surreal moment was happening. Nathan, me, silence and comfort, nothing else. I realized that home really wasn't about where; it was about who, because I had never felt so at home.
The feeling of contentment no longer frightened me.
I opened my eyes, feeling water trickle over my chest; he was splashing me with one of his hands.
"Nathan!"
He laughed.
"You dozed off."
"Wasn't that the intention?"
"I got bored after ten minutes of admiring your face. Your breasts started to look more interesting."
"Why aren't you sleeping?"
"Someone needed to make sure you wouldn't drown, right?"
"Haha, very funny. Aren't you tired?"
"I still have energy."
"Does it never run out?"
"Not for you." He buried his nose in my neck, and his hand slid between my legs.
"Nathan..."
Shit. Does he ever stop? I reached for his hand, which was already moving, making me moan. "No more orgasms for today. Don't you want me to have a syncope?" I pushed his hand away as he smiled.
"Party pooper."
"Your energy doesn't run out, but mine ran out an hour ago."
He laughed, and I noticed his excitement against my ass. I closed my eyes, breathing deeply. He made me want him even when I didn't want to.
"I have an idea. We should talk until you calm down and stop thinking about sex."
"I'm calm."
I couldn't see his face, but I knew he was smiling.
"That's not what I'm feeling, literally feeling, against my ass."
We laughed.
"My idea is better... I can keep playing with my beautiful friends because I didn't give them enough attention earlier." His hands cupped my breasts, squeezing gently, enough to destabilize me.
I used all my willpower to push his hands away.
"They're fine with that, thank you. Now, less hands and more conversation."
"Okay. What do you want to talk about?"
I sensed the exasperation in his voice, sensing that I was about to ask about whatever happened in his past. I really wanted to ask, but it wasn't the best way to start.
"Well... This trip with your family... Do we really have to go?"
"It's just for New Year's. It will be two days at most if you prefer."
"It's just that... I don't know if I want to spend New Year's away from my dad. And I don't know if he can make it to Ireland."
"You haven't talked to him yet?"
"No."
"Maybe he can make it. Don't worry, we'll figure it out." He kissed the top of my head.
"I hope so. It's only a few days until Christmas. Does your family also celebrate together?"
"You have no idea. Well, even I don't know what my mother is planning for this year."
"I like her."
"My mother?"
"Yes."
"She likes you too."
"I was afraid that she would think I was some kind of opportunist trying to scam you."
He laughed.
"It would be likely that she would think I harassed you when you worked for me."
"You did."
He laughed again.
"But no, she sees you as an angel. She just has no idea that the angel is Lucifer himself."
"Yes, the most beautiful, wise, and powerful of all."
This time, it was I who laughed.
"Touché, Mr. Ryan."
He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me closer.
"Everything is fine, right, about my trip?" I asked.
His body tensed behind me.
"You had to remind me. Do you want to know if I'm okay with the fact that you'll be spending three days alone with another man?"
"Wow! You make it sound terrible."
"If I could choose, you wouldn't go, or I would go with you, but I can't be absent for three days; I have business."
"It's just work. Trust me."
"That's what I'm trying to do."
"Prove it."
"Prove it?"
I turned to face him.
"Yes... Let me in." I put my hand on his chest. "Truly. Tell me everything. Stop hiding things from me." I held back the tears that threatened to fall.
"Kate... don't do this."
"What? Try to have a real connection?"
"We already have one."
"No. We're together, but you won't let me in. It's like I have the combination to the safe and still can't open it."
I feared he would never let me into his heart.
"You've already entered my mind... that's enough."
"No. It's not."
My vision blurred with tears. I took a deep breath. Don't cry, damn it.
"Don't cry, okay? No more secrets. Tell me what else you want to know."
"You know... I know you're hiding something from me because you think it will push me away. But it won't, I promise. Nothing else will." He closed his eyes, deep in thought.
"Alright..."
