Chapter 70

NATHAN

Could this be some kind of shitty joke? There's a giant bouquet of roses on her table. Without caring about anything this time, I approach it and rummage through it looking for a note. There's only one paper, with no sender. Written in a ridiculously fancy way.
*You're surprisingly amazing. Thank you, beautiful. Have a great day. See you later.*
The idea that it could be from a guy makes me freak out. Maybe it's from a friend or family member. Don't fool yourself, Ryan.
"Good morning, Mr. Ryan," she caught me again. But this time I won't hold back.
"I thought I was clear about this kind of thing!" I hold up the note.
"I'm sorry, I have no idea who they are."
"Don't be hypocritical. The person who sent it thinks you're surprisingly amazing! And also thank you! But the big question is for what?"
"I apologize for it happening again. I'll make sure it never happens again. But who sent it and why, is information that doesn't concern you. You also don't have the right to snoop."
Keep control, Ryan. Motherfucker!
"I want this out of here now. And you and a coffee in my office in a minute."
"Yes, sir."
Damn it! Why is this happening to me? I should never have gotten involved with her. Shit! She can't just forget about me so quickly.
She enters and leaves the coffee on my desk before sitting down.
"Let's review tomorrow's appointments."
"Okay."
"Is there anything on the schedule for today?"
"No work. Uh, I mean, there's a charity event at nine, hosted by the Warrens on the personal schedule."
"Anything else?"
"No, sir."
"Great. Tomorrow?"
"Project presentations at ten. Meeting at two with the director of the Italian branch. Scheduled time with Miss Thompson at four, that's all."
"I want you to have everything ready for the presentations, and I want to see your project for the university."
"No. I mean, it's not ready. Not even close."
"It can be the skeleton. But I want to see how it's going. Oh! Late reports ready by the end of the day on my desk."
"So you want me to deliver the reports, prepare the room for presentations, and give you a skeleton of my project? Today?"
"Everything ready by the end of the day. It seems like you have a lot of free time, Miss Collins." She doesn't say anything, but I know she would kill me if she could.
"Well, I'm leaving. See you later." I say. I couldn't spend the whole day here without ending her. I have no idea what to do. Shit! She managed to ruin my peace. I have to solve this. I have to make her come back to me before it's too late. I still have some control over her, I can make her forget this idea of wanting a relationship, which is completely ridiculous. She can't want something so much that she never had and doesn't need more of. I can give her everything she needs, my way.
If before I thought about giving up, I see that it was completely impossible. I can't imagine her with another guy. The idea makes me freak out, like the night at the club, but the hardest part is being near her without being able to touch her, the days become boring. The nights have been endless, with a lot of insomnia and dreams that leave me even more frustrated. Life has become a challenge without her.

Diana Adams smiles at me from the other side of the room. Dazzling as always. She's already given me some great nights. I pick up two glasses of champagne when I see her approaching.
"What a wonderful surprise," I greet her with a kiss on the cheek and hand her one of the glasses.
"Nathan, long time no see, right?"
"Seven months, Paris, am I right?"
"You have a great memory."
"How could I forget?"
"I see you're still the same as always."
If only that were true.
"Is that a bad thing?"
"Not entirely."
"Which part? By the way, I haven't had the chance to tell you how amazing you look."
"Thank you. You too."
She's wearing a red dress, and her black hair is loose, a perfect combination. But the white smile with red lips is even better.
"So, how's everything going?"
"Well." I try to sound convincing, but I'm pretty sure she knows I'm lying. "But nothing you can't improve. Of course, if you're not accompanied."
"I'm not."
"Great. And how about you?"
"Working hard."
She starts talking, but my attention is drawn to the entrance of the room. It takes me some time to comprehend what I'm seeing. Kate is here and with Kent. It's unbelievable. Before being consumed by hatred, I allow myself to observe her. She's wearing another one of her damn black dresses, discreet yet provocative at the same time. Why is she here with him? Did she accept the... No. The damn flowers. It can't be.
"Nathan?"
"I'm sorry, I need some fresh air." I leave, passing by some people in the middle of the room, looking for an exit.
"Ryan!" Someone calls me. I try to hide my shitty expression and turn around. Michael Warren. Terrible timing.
"Warren!"
"How are you, Ryan? It's wonderful to have your illustrious presence for another year!"
"I'm fine, and you?"
"Great. How are business matters?"
"Everything's under control."
"Michael!"
The damn Kent shows up behind Warren. And she's right by his side. I take a deep breath, trying to control myself. Michael turns to them. Our eyes meet. She doesn't seem surprised. She knew I would be here and came with him. Is she testing my patience?
"John! It's great to see you." They greet each other.
"Ryan," he says bluntly when he notices me. I nod. Then, he introduces Kate as a friend. I notice the pause before the word friend. Her expression gives away much more. I can't believe she did this to me. Collins, you're making me play our little game right here.
"Miss Collins works for me," I force a smile. "If possible, I'd like to speak with you privately later today."
"Ryan, she's not on the clock right now."
Kent tries to disguise his annoyance with a little humor. I smile and get closer to her.
"Have you shown him all the terms of our contract?" I ask her. "Excuse me." I touch her shoulder and discreetly slide my fingers down her arm before leaving, and before I can't control the urge to punch the bastard.
Mr. Ryan
