Chapter 141
KATE
The nightclub was packed, and I knew Nathan was really annoyed to be here. I was still embarrassed about leaving the dinner, and to make matters worse, Lisa wasn't answering me at all.
"Let's go to the bar; maybe we can see better from there since she's not responding," I said.
"I'm too old for this," he said as if talking to himself. We squeezed through the crowd until we reached the bar with more neon lights.
"Is your friend always like this? Damn! Why so many lights?" He squinted his eyes, furrowing his brow.
"I don't know what's gotten into her. It's been years since she's acted like this."
"Has she done this before?"
"Never been to college?"
I turned my attention back to my phone screen.
"About ten years ago. Alright... I need to find a bathroom. Find her quickly, Collins. Be patient," he said, glancing around.
"Seriously?" I rolled my eyes.
He walked away, passing two half-drunk girls who were approaching the bar.
"Wow! Did you see that?" A blonde in a shiny miniskirt says to a tall brunette. They both look at Nathan before he disappears among the people.
"How could I not? What a fine ass!" The brunette retorted.
They laughed.
"He must have a nice package too!" The blonde added.
They leaned against the bar, giggling.
"If everything on him is as big as it looks, we're lucky ladies."
I wanted to laugh immediately, and strangely, I didn't feel jealous. Being with Nathan Ryan meant having to put up with women drooling over him. I had noticed that before.
My phone vibrated. Lisa replied to my message. She was outside the nightclub, and an emoji of vomit appeared right after her words. She was going to hear from me.
I waited for Nathan to return from the bathroom and noticed the two women changing their posture when they realized he was approaching.
"Did you find her?" he asked.
"Yes. Let's go."
"Isn't she here?"
"She's outside."
I approached the two women with a smile.
"Girls, I think we only have one lucky woman here tonight." I winked at them, and they were shocked before bursting into laughter.
"That's right, girl!" the brunette shouted as I walked away.
"What was that?" Nathan asked behind me.
"Nothing." I held back a smile.
We left the nightclub. There was little activity outside, just a few people on the street.
Lisa was leaning against her car; her makeup was smudged, and she looked like she had been crying. I instantly became worried. This wasn't the happy, drunk, mischievous Lisa I knew. I felt bad for not being there for her in the past few days.
"Hey, are you okay?" I approached her, holding her face.
She had indeed been crying. "What happened?"
"Hello! You must be Kate," a redhead girl approached, holding a package.
"I bought a headache painkiller. I'm Charlie; nice to meet you."
"Thank you, Charlie, and thanks for letting me know too."
"No need to call her," Lisa mumbled.
"Well, I hope you feel better, Lisa. I need to go now."
Lisa nodded. I thanked Charlie again before she left.
"Let's go Collins, before we become tomorrow's tabloid cover," Nathan said behind me.
"Alright."
"Damn, you brought Ryan along too," Lisa muttered with a drunken voice, making Nathan exhale with irritation behind me.
"Come on, Lisa, let's take you home, and you'll tell me what happened."
"Nothing happened."
"I know you. Come on, I'll have someone pick up your car later."
I held her shoulders, guided her to Nat's car, and put her in the back seat.
"Great night, Collins," Nathan said, dripping with sarcasm, before getting into the car.
He wasn't happy at all. But Lisa was my friend, and that's what mattered. I had to help her.
"I didn't ask you to come," I retorted after getting into the car and sitting in the back seat next to Lisa.
"Fantastic! I've become the driver for a drunk woman and a drunk babysitter."
"Lisa, where are your keys?"
I wasn't going to listen to him complain. I would drive to her apartment myself.
"Sorry for causing trouble, even with your jerk of a boyfriend," she slurred, making me laugh.
"Better a jerk than a cockblock," Nathan retorted.
"Ryan!" I reprimanded him. "Tell me what happened, Lisa."
"I'm sorry for ruining your sex life," she said to me, then turned to Nathan. "I don't feel sorry for you, Ryan!" She laughed.
At least she was laughing. And I was too. They could easily kill each other.
I put Lisa on the bed. It was hard to believe she was in that state because of a guy. According to her, the guy from work had dumped her. That's why you shouldn't mix relationships and work. Now I knew that from experience.
It was just a rejection. She would be fine as long as she wasn't truly in love with him.
Nathan was sitting on the living room couch, playing with his phone. Work, as always.
"You're really addicted to work."
"Can we leave now?"
"I better stay."
"Drunk friend one, Ryan zero? That's not happening."
I sat next to him.
"She needs me; she's heartbroken."
"Less Collins. That woman probably doesn't even have a heart."
I had to hold back from laughing.
"She's sad."
"You want a sad boyfriend too?"
"Stop. You have to try harder to get along with her, Ryan."
"What the hell do I gain from that?"
"She's my best friend. If she doesn't like you, it'll be bad for us."
"You're not easily influenced, Collins. Manipulation suits you better."
"I'm tired."
"Let's go home."
"You mean your home."
"Why can't you just agree for once? No objections, just obedience."
Why the hell was he so enticing?
"Obedience? Don't make me laugh."
"You push me to the limit, and you know what I feel like doing?"
His expression told me exactly what he wanted. And I couldn't deny that I wanted it too.
"Fine. Your place, but just for tonight," I agreed.
