Chapter 119

NATHAN

I lost sight of her for a second, and now she was talking to a guy next to the bar. I had to act quickly. A crazy idea popped into my head, but maybe it was my only chance to be alone with her.

I approached Ben and Mary.

"Hello."

"Nathan?" Ben was surprised by my approach. And his friend gave me a once-over. "Mary, this is Nathan Ryan, my best friend. Nathan, this is Mary, whom I have already mentioned.

"Pleasure to meet you."

"The pleasure is mine. This may seem strange, but can I talk to you?"

"With me?" She narrowed her eyes with suspicion. I nodded. "Sure, I guess."

"Okay. I'll get a drink then." Ben said goodbye to her with a kiss on the cheek.

"Alright, I suppose it's about Kate?"

"Yes. I know you don't know me, but I need a favor. A big favor."

"What do you want?"

"I need to talk to her alone."

"I'm not sure if I should help you. Lisa definitely wouldn't."

"We both have something in common; we just want to see her happy. And believe me, no one knows better than I do what makes her happy."

"Maybe I'm making a big mistake. But what do you want me to do?"

"It's going to sound even stranger, but I need your keys and for you to make a phone call."

"Are you crazy?"

"Believe me, this is a last-ditch effort."

"Alright, I hope you don't make me regret this, or else it's going to be you who regrets it later."

"Okay. I'll take the risk."

I drove to Mary's apartment after she called Kate, asking for help and lying about having a problem with Ben and coming back home. If all went well, I would be grateful to this woman for the rest of my life.

I took the elevator and entered with the keys she gave me. Mary must have had a good job because her apartment was modern and spacious. It didn't take long for Kate to knock on the door.

"Are you kidding me?" She was speechless and visibly angry.

"Hello."

"Where's Mary?"

"Probably at Ben's place."

"She didn't... I can't believe she did this." Her expression turned into a nervous and incredulous smile.

"I liked her more than the other unbearable creature."

"Her name is Lisa, and you can't badmouth her."

"Collins, come in."

"Why?"

"I want to talk to you."

"I'm tired, Ryan."

"I know, you must have had a lot of fun."

"Sure, it's my birthday. But I'm not exactly tired in that sense."

"Yes, congratulations, but now come in." I pulled her hand.

"You're very kind... and don't touch me."

"Let's skip the sarcasm."

"What do you want?"

I had a lot on my mind; I had had many days to organize and think about what to say. And she was surprising me with her not-so-hostile attitude. Maybe it was the alcohol. I wasn't sure if it was a good thing for her to not be a hundred percent sober.

"Sit down."

She rolled her eyes before complying. How I missed her. I wanted to pounce on her. I should have drunk more alcohol before facing this.

"Alright... I know we've had this conversation countless times, and believe me, this will be the last if you say no. First of all, I want you to know that this is a last-ditch effort, Kate."

She nodded, and her face turned serious.

"I understood your position in the beginning when you were concerned about getting involved with your boss and thought it could hinder your career, and you were also right not to trust me with my history with women, I understand.

But all of that was before I met you. And afterward, you didn't trust me when you decided to leave Ryan; you believed I had something with Mia.

I haven't had anything to do with her since we broke up years ago. Then you left. As if everything that had happened between us meant nothing to you.

You have no idea how hard I tried to forget you all these months. But I couldn't. And then you came back and gave me hope of having you back that night, but then you acted like a child, trying to deny what you feel.

You made me furious, acting like a damn bitch. And damn it, days later, you showed up at my house as if nothing had happened.

Do you think that was consistent with your attitude of saying you didn't care?"

"Ryan..."

"I'm not done yet.
It's understandable that you're immature when it comes to any kind of relationship, you don't have experience in that, but the fact that you're so mature about other aspects of your life made me expect more from you.
I know I'm not perfect, far from it. You know better than anyone how I am.
I keep asking myself how come I let you do this to me? Why the hell can't I move on with my life? And I can't do anything about it, that's the worst, it makes me completely crazy to lose control over my own life.
But I know you still feel something, damn it, Collins... I want this so badly... One last chance for both of us.
Like I said before, if you say no, I won't insist anymore, I'll leave you alone and avoid any contact between us. I promise."

It was a promise I didn't know if I could keep.

"I'm just asking for one last chance because I can't handle my life without you."

She sighed deeply.

"Nathan... I don't know if I can trust you. It seems sincere, but..." She rubbed her eyes with her fingers.
Damn, that seemed like an impending no. What else could I say?

"I like you. Don't you understand that?" She could barely look into my eyes. "Look at me." I hold her face in my hands. "Don't do this to us anymore. Please." Her eyes were teary.

She nodded and hugged me, calming my heart and that part of me that was almost dying. I held her tightly in my arms.
