Chapter 44
KATE
After taking a shower, I join Lisa on the sofa.
"So... how's the work going?" I say, picking up the beer on the table.
"Well, apart from the fact that my boss is a bastard sometimes."
"Believe me! I know what that's like."
"But you have the advantage that he is a very hot bastard boss."
"He is an asshole."
"But he is still hot, but changing the subject, what are we going to do on a Monday night?"
"I don't know about you... but I have a date."
"No, really?" She throws the pillow at me, euphoric. "Who is he?"
"A guy I met on the flight to Switzerland."
"Wow, and he lives here?"
"Yes.
"What's he like?"
"Normal."
"Oh, Kate, please! No one describes anyone in such a way. Tell me."
"I don't know... We had lunch together one afternoon in Geneva. We met by chance. He seemed to me a very experienced and gentleman."
"Did you two have lunch together? And you didn't tell me? You have to tell me when you meet a guy."
"I'm sorry. I didn't think it was a big deal. But he called me today and asked me out."
"What is his name?"
"John."
"John?"
"John Kent. I think so."
"John Kent? The name rings a bell. "Wait... Do you know what he works with?"
"I think he has an important position in some company. He already knew Nathan. I mean, Mr. Ryan. Why?" She takes out her cell phone and types something.
"Your John, wouldn't that be him? Would it?" She shows me a picture of John, the kind of picture taken at one of those important events.
"Yes, that's him."
"Oh my God, Kate! You're going to go out with one of the most eligible bachelors in New York, and you don't tell me?"
"I just told you. But I didn't know you knew him."
"Everyone in New York knows him. He is the CEO of the Red Corporation. He's in the tabloids all the time."
"Wow... so maybe it was a bad idea."
"Not at all. He's hot."
"What if he's just another bastard?" She laughs and stands up, pulling me up.
"He'd still be a very hot bastard! Come on!"
"Where to?"
"Let's try to make you more beautiful!"
"Are you trying to cheer me up after telling me I'm going out with a possible playboy?"
"Come on, Kate! It’s going to be great, and you really need to go out with someone. When was the last time you went out on a date?"
"Okay." I say, surrendering. That was enough to make me feel bad for not telling her about Nathan."
After two hours, I am ready. Lisa made me put on a black dress below the knee with a deep v-neck and black heels. As usual, I preferred my hair loose and natural. It was almost nine o'clock. Lisa decided to go out with the boys, whom I haven't seen for a while. We are in her room when we hear someone knocking on the door.
"I'll answer the door!" She shouts and rushes past me, heading for the door. "Go get your purse." She whispers. I nod.
When I return to the living room, they are sitting on the sofa. John stands up when he sees me.
"Hello!" I greet him with a smile.
"Hi, you look beautiful." He says while kissing me on the cheek. His cologne was wonderful.
"Thank you. Well, I guess you must have met Lisa by now." I narrow my eyes at her, as she smiles.
"Well... I already knew Miss Dickens."
"Really?" I look at Lisa in disbelief. She smiles. Why the hell didn't she tell me?
"I'm going to kill you." I murmur. She laughs. And turns to John.
"Take care of her." Lisa! She's crazy.
"Yes, Miss. I got it."
"Have a good time." She leaves us, heading for her room.
"Can we go?"
"Of course. I'm sorry, she's just like that, you know..." I say as we leave. He smiles, and I allow myself to admire his sensual and discreet smile. His face seems to have been sculpted, so perfect.
"It's all right. She's just worried about you or the danger I can offer you." The thought makes me laugh.
"I guess she shouldn't worry then."
"Are you sure?" He says as she opens the car door. I smile in appreciation.
"Where are you taking me, Mr. Kent?" I ask as he gets into the car.
"Just John, please." I nod. "I was thinking somewhere quiet."
"Great."
"Do you like wine?"
"Very much."
"Well, would you be offended if we went to my house? Because it is the most peaceful place I can imagine, and also where we can find the best wines I know."
"Do you want to take me to your house?" I pretend to be indignant.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend you."
"I'm just kidding. It's okay, I trust you. By the way, you've never acted like anything but a gentleman."
"Thank you." He starts the car. "And your work, how is it going?"
"Fine, I guess."
"Are you saying this because of your boss?"
"He's pretty hard to deal with sometimes."
"We have had some business dealings in common. I admit he is good at what he does." Oh, yes, he is great. "But he's a bit of a hard head."
"He is an asshole. But we shouldn't spoil the night by talking about him." Especially when my traitorous mind reminds me of the wonders he can do.
"All right, but I couldn't help but notice the possessive way he acted toward you in Geneva. Anyone would say he was jealous." I swallow hard.
"He always acts like that. It's not just with me. I believe he thinks the whole world revolves around him. You can be sure that it would be impossible to have any emotional relationship between me and him."
"You know, I even understand him. I would also want all your attention just for me."
"You have her now." We smile at each other, and I can even feel butterflies in my stomach.
