Chapter 93

KATE

His hair was still as dark as I remembered, and his eyes were the same that made my stomach twist, so intense with their honey color. The beard seemed to be the only new addition to his face. His physique was still incredible, but even better. Damn it. Why the hell am I thinking these things? He shouldn't affect me. Not at all.

"Earlier, you said nerdy girl... I think you're not a girl anymore. You seem more like an incredible woman, Miss K." I think I smile too widely. How does he still remember that?

"You too, Mr. M." That's how we referred to each other when we first met at the library. It sounds ridiculous, I know. It was because of the characters in a book I was reading, which he happened to have read as well. The characters used to call each other "Mr." and "Miss" followed by the first letter of their name. I don't know how he still remembers that. It's so silly.

"I feel like we still have a lot to talk about," he says.

"We do?"

"Don't you think?" I nod. I can't, dear Mr. M, because there's a certain Mr. R who would be quite furious, especially if he knew how involved I got with you in just one week.

"I'm about to leave. Are you going to do something now?"

"Well, I..." I spot Lisa behind him. "I'm responsible for the security of a certain young lady." Thank you for always being an acceptable excuse, Lisa.

"Oh, really? Wouldn't that be Lisa Dickens?"

"Did I hear my name?" Lisa says before her eyes nearly pop out when she sees Michael. "Oh, my God! Grey?"

"Dickens."

"So, this is the night you two postponed?" Oh my God! I want to bury my head in a hole.

"Lisa!" I reprimand her, while Michael laughs.

"She's still the same, isn't she?" He winks at me.

"Definitely. Maybe even a little worse."

"Hey! I'm still here."

"And I just lost Kate to your security escort home."

"Was that the excuse she gave you?" I give her a stern look. Damn it, Lisa, cooperate.

"If I didn't know you, I'd actually think it was an excuse," he says to Lisa. That's why I liked him, his humor, his intelligence, his charm... stop it, Kate.

"Don't worry, Kate will have many more free nights." I'm going to kill you, Lisa Dickens. She looks at me with a wide smile.

"I hope so. Can you give me your number, Kate?" I watch as he takes out his phone and extends his arm to hand it to me.

"I'll save it for you." Lisa takes the phone, narrowing her eyes at me, sensing my tension. What the hell is she doing?

"Can I call you during the week?" he asks.

"Uh..."

"Of course, she'd love that." Damn it, Lisa! Why is she doing this? "My work here is done. It was a pleasure seeing you, Michael. Visit us whenever you want," she says before handing back the phone and leaving us.

"Does she still speak for you sometimes?"

"Only when she wants to get me into trouble."

"How so? Am I the trouble?"

"No... it's nothing."

"I was really happy to see you again, Kate."

"Me too."

"Well, I have to go. Expect a call." He steps closer and kisses my cheek. "See you later!"

"Goodbye!"

I breathe again when he disappears from my sight. I need a drink urgently because I can't get the pool events out of my head.

NATHAN

I start the car after entering the address Shawn provided into my phone's GPS. I couldn't stay at home wondering what could happen to her. The last time I saw her drunk, I was appalled. She doesn't know when to stop, she has no limits. It would be easy for any guy to try to take advantage of her in that state.

I knock on the door of the indicated floor. A long-haired blond guy simply opens the door and disappears, leaving all the noise to invade the hallway. I step inside. The people here aren't as young as I imagined, Kate must be one of the youngest. It must be because she started college so early. Most people here are definitely drunk. The place is dimly lit, and an old Beatles song is playing.

I can spot her annoying friend from a distance, but Kate isn't with her. I try to find her by looking around, but I can't. I walk up to the woman with black hair and touch her shoulder. She turns with a long smile on her lips, which quickly fades.

"I can't believe it," she says, visibly drunk, which worries me even more.

"Where's Kate?"

"Are you stalking my friend?"

"Just tell me where she is."

"You know, I actually wanted to talk to you."

"Do you know where she is?" She rolls her eyes.

"She must be somewhere with a bed. Since she was talking to Noah Jensen at the bar a few minutes ago." Damn it. Is she being serious or just trying to provoke me?

"Are you sure?"

"Don't worry. She won't do anything she doesn't want to." The woman seemed like a terrible friend.

"Did you see where she went?"

"I don't know. I think she went upstairs."

"Which way?" She points to a staircase further ahead. Damn it, Kate.

KATE

I can't even breathe properly with Noah so close, my eyes are heavy, and I'm trying to figure out how I ended up here. Just a minute ago, I was in the kitchen. I think I was about to vomit or something.

"I'm fine," I say, stepping out of the bathroom and heading towards the bedroom.

"Wait, Kate..." He grabs my arm and pushes me against the wall.

"No, Noah."

"It's okay, I just want to take care of you."

"I've already told you I'm fine."

"You're not going to give me a chance, Kate, after everything?" He holds onto my hip. My eyes are fixed on the bed; I really want to lie down there and sleep. I can't seem to stand up properly. But I have to get Noah out of here first; it's a terrible idea to be alone with him in a room like this, in my current state. He tightens his grip on my hip.

"A chance?"

"Please, just stay. Don't make me..."

"I want you, Kate." He tries to kiss me. My eyes are heavy, and I try to push him away with my arms.

"Get your fucking hands off her!" I hear the familiar voice before feeling a gentle pull forward. And when I open my eyes, I feel his muscular arms around me.

"Nathan?"

"Damn it, Kate!" He's angry, but I can't keep my eyes open.
