Chapter 71
NATHAN
She's still there, trying to pretend she cares about him. Sometimes it's even convincing. But I know you, Collins. I know that's not where you want to be.
"Nathan? Are you okay?" Diana appears by my side.
"Yes, I'm sorry for leaving you."
"You didn't seem well."
"It was just a little tiredness. But everything's fine."
"That's good. I have to say, I'm surprised to find you alone here. Seeing Nathan Ryan without a date is quite shocking. The media must be gnawing their nails to find out what's behind it."
"Who said I'm alone? I thought we..." She laughs.
"I was starting to think it was strange you hadn't made any of your bold proposals to me, Ryan."
"Well, I can do better..." I approach to whisper in her ear.
"Mr. Ryan." Kate interrupts us from behind me, I turn to face her. I smile at her and raise a finger, asking for a minute. I turn my attention back to Diana.
"Well, if you accept... we can leave here, and I can find an amazing place to reminisce about old times," I whisper. She laughs. She wouldn't like to know that this proposal was based on my desire for Kate. "I'll let you think about it. Excuse me." I approach Kate.
"Are you done posing as Kent's girlfriend?"
"Do you realize how indiscreet that was?"
"You're being very discreet coming here with the bastard."
"That's none of your business."
"Great. It also doesn't matter if I want everyone to know the truth about us."
"You're a jerk." She's going to make me lose my patience.
"Come on." I grab her arm to make her walk.
"No."
"Do you want me to carry you? You know I don't mind."
"No." I pull her. She refuses. I narrow my eyes. Is she testing me?
"Have you ever imagined being on the covers of magazines being carried? The media would love it."
"You wouldn't dare."
"Do you think so?" I crouch.
"Okay. Okay." She surrenders, whispering through her teeth. I pretend to adjust my shoe before standing up.
I find a door and then stairs.
"Where are you going, Ryan?"
"Come on."
At the end of the staircase, there is a giant hallway filled with doors. I open one of them. There's a room with antique furniture.
"Come in," I say, relieved that she doesn't object.
"What do you want, Ryan?"
"Let me list... first, that you stay away from damn Kent and anyone else, that you stop testing my patience as it has already run out, and give up on ending our agreement."
"Do you still think we're going to renew this ridiculous agreement? Didn't you understand when I said I don't want it anymore?"
"I know you want to. Let's be honest."
"That's enough! I'm tired. I don't want to talk about this anymore. Is it so hard to forget?"
"Yes, but I can see that it's not hard for you. Just be honest with me once and tell me if you accepted the ridiculous request for a relationship?"
"Not yet."
Not yet? Is she really considering it?
"What was the reason for the ridiculous flowers, then?"
"Forget it, Ryan."
"The truth, just once, Collins."
"Please don't insist."
"Are you scared?"
"Of what would I be scared?"
"That you might end up killing the bastard."
"Don't be ridiculous. What can you do?"
"Anything I find necessary. You've pushed me to my limit, Kate."
"You're not going to do anything."
"Why are you here with him?"
"Because I want to be, and maybe I want to accept his ridiculous request too."
"Stop talking nonsense. We both know you don't like him."
"Now you decide who I like or not?"
"I want you to stay away from him."
"You don't control me, Ryan."
"What the hell! Why are you doing this to me? You're...driving me crazy."
"I'm not doing anything to you. I'm just living my life."
"I know you haven't forgotten." I approach her. "I can't be without you." I hold her chin, looking into her eyes. "I want you. You make me lose control, but if you're with me, I don't mind losing it."
"I can't," She pushes my hand away.
"Stop caring and be mine again."
"Let me go and forget it."
"Never. You ask me to leave, but I can see in your eyes that you want the opposite. Say yes, here and now. I want you for me. Only mine." I pull her closer, my lips brushing hers. Soon she surrenders, and once again, I can taste her. Sweet and warm. Her exciting tongue invades my mouth, but she stops and tries to push me away. "Why?" I ask, my forehead touching hers, holding her hips. She tries to remove my hands.
"I can't."
"You can."
"No, I... John."
"Forget him."
"No."
"Shhh." I try to kiss her, but she dodges.
"I can't!" She steps away.
"Kate..."
"John and I are together." What? Shit! She didn't... She can't have done that. Adrenaline takes over me. I feel the anger spreading through my body.
"Did you fuck him?"
"I have to go," she says, stepping back. Is that a yes? My head is boiling. Anger, hatred, disgust. I punch the wall with force.
"Nathan!" She yells. I open my eyes and see blood on my knuckles. She approaches, concerned.
"No!" I growl.
"You hurt yourself."
"It wasn't me. It was you. Acting like a whore." She hits me in the face instantly, an expected reaction.
"You will never speak to me like that again!"
"Now I understand. The flowers, coming here with him," I let the anger take over me. My whole body seemed to boil. I was going to end that bastard. I walked towards the door.
"Where do you think you're going?!" she yelled, running to stand in front of me.
"Move."
"No! What do you think you're going to do?"
"Move!"
"No. I won't let you do something stupid. Are you going to hurt me?"
I would be unable to touch her like that. I breathed and walked to sit on the wine-leather couch. Was this the end? She had been with another guy. And now? Had she really forgotten so easily? She was only mine...
"Promise me you won't do anything, Nathan?"
"You're not going back to him. He will never lay a finger on you again."
"I thought telling you would make you understand. But I guess it didn't work out as I expected."
"If you go back there, I will tell the whole truth."
"Are you blackmailing me?"
"Take it as you want. You're coming with me."
*Do whatever it takes, Nathan. Don't let her get away. Pull her back. Pull her back.*
"Fine. You're an asshole."
