Chapter 45
KATE
We were having a pleasant conversation until he parked in a garage in a Soho building.
"Tell me, Kate, what made you accept coming to my house?" he said.
"I like you. I mean, the way you act. You're simply charming," I replied.
"Thank you." He's so mysterious and, at the same time, so sincere.
"I think you have a way with words, Mr. Kent," I said.
"You have to learn how to win people over in my world. You know how it works."
"Yeah, I know. You know, I liked having lunch with you that day. You helped me clarify some things."
"I remember well. You asked me why someone like me would be interested in you," he said as he got out of the car and walked around to open the door for me. "You're an amazing woman, and even more amazing for not realizing it. You have everything a man is looking for. I mean, a man like me. You're intelligent, beautiful, and determined. A little too young, perhaps. But mature enough."
"I feel flattered," I said. He smiled with perfect teeth. His blue eyes sparkled in the dim light.
"I am flattered that you accepted to come to my house," he said as he led me to the elevator door, holding my hand. When the door opened, we entered a huge and cozy room with big sofas.
"Make yourself at home," he said as I sat down. He joined me after picking up a bottle of wine and glasses.
"I'm curious about you," I said as he poured the wine.
"I'll answer all of them gladly if I can," he replied.
"You told me you've had some relationships. Why didn't they work out?" I asked.
"Lack of compatibility," he said as he handed me a glass.
"Just lack of compatibility? That's it?"
"Yes."
"You don't want to talk about it?"
"I'm being honest. That's the truth. Divergent interests, that sort of thing."
"I think you like to simplify things."
"Prove it," he said, gesturing towards the glass in my hand. I took a sip.
"Smooth and refreshing. French?"
"Italian."
"Do you live alone here?" I asked.
"Yes. Most of the time, because it's closer to work. But I prefer my residence outside the city."
"I'd really feel quite lonely without Lisa," I said.
"But I'm not alone. I have my employees. They're always here."
"They're not your family. It's different. Are they here now?"
"Yes. But don't worry, they'll only show up if I call."
"I'm not worried. Why would I be?" He offered me another sensual smile. John was the kind of guy who could easily persuade me with all his charm and that killer smile.
"Answer me honestly, Kate. Will you stay?" he asked.
"Huh?"
"Will you spend the night here with me?"
Wow, that was fast. He wants me to stay.
"This is confusing. Do you just want one night? Or do you want something more?" My words came out a little bitter. "If you want just one night, I have to say I found out some time ago that I'm not compatible with that kind of relationship."
"Katherine, I really want to get to know you better, but it would be hypocritical to say that I don't want you tonight."
"I'm sorry, I just want to be clear with you."
"You don't have to apologize. I understand you. Despite you saying that you've never been in a relationship, there are traces of something that didn't work out and hurt you in some way." How could he read me so easily? I take a sip of wine. Unfortunately, he was right. I was involved in something that made no sense at all and still troubles me now.
"Do you want to go home?" he asks.
"Do you want me to?"
"No. I just don't want to pressure you."
"I'm fine. I'm thinking."
"About what?"
"You said you want me... but you haven't tried to touch me. I'm not used to this kind of approach."
"You just need to ask. And tell me how far I can go," he says, always showing a lot of calm. It was so different from Nathan, who only took what he wanted and gave me things I didn't even know I needed.
"Asking is not my style. But if necessary... I'll give you a limit." He falls silent. I see his gaze roam my body, without any shame.
The room is filled with sexual tension. The light was dim in the room. The wine had already stirred me up enough. I was about to beg him to kiss me, out of mere curiosity. He remains silent.
"Are you going to keep looking at me?"
"I am." He was getting to me, differently, but he was. His gaze made me aware of things like the change in my breathing, the temperature of my skin, and the growing excitement between my thighs.
"I think I need some fresh air. Can I?" I make a move toward the balcony. He nods.
I walk to the door, taking deep breaths, but when I'm about to open it, I'm surprised by one of his arms, crossing my path. He leans his hand against the glass of the door, trapping me between it and his body. I stare at his face.
"You don't need fresh air..." he says before touching my face, sliding his thumb over my lip. When he takes it away, I instinctively bite it. I close my eyes, waiting. My heart is racing.
I feel his lips touch mine and then his hot tongue finds mine. His lips were dominant, leading every movement in our kiss, in a way that demanded that I surrender. He led me back to the couch, his hands gripping my hips, not stopping kissing me, making me lie down and leaning over me.
His beard grazed my neck, causing shivers, and his hand found the slit in my dress, caressing my thigh above the knee, while his fingers brushed against the bare skin of my cleavage.
I wanted to take off his shirt, so I could see and touch every muscle underneath.
"Are you staying?" he asks in my ear.
"I can't." I can't do the same. Even though I could tell he's a different guy. I want to try but in a different way.
"Okay." He says, getting off me and offering me his hand. "We'll go at your pace."
"I'm sorry. You're just perfect, and I seem like a bore now."
"It's okay. You owe me one. As long as you pay. Right?"
"Right. I promise." I kiss him slowly, pressing my body against his.
"You're making it difficult, Kate... even I have a limit to chivalry."
"Good to know." I smile, teasing him.
"Kate." He warns.
"I should go now."
"Let's go. I'll take you."
"Thank you." I grab my bag and follow him to the exit.
