Chapter 58

KATE

"What?" How can he say these things so simply? Don't make me wet, Ryan. I hear him laugh at my surprised tone.
"Are you drinking?"
"Not yet."
"Don't push the limits."
"Ryan..."
"I know you'll say it's none of my business, but there are a lot of guys out there who would love for you to get drunk and make their job easier. I don't want anyone touching what's mine. That's all."
"You know I hate it when you talk like that. I'm not yours because I'm not a damn thing."
"That's not what you say to me when you're moaning."
"Fuck you!"
"I wish you were here to do that for me." His words had a direct connection to the nerves between my legs; this was dangerous.
"Bye, Ryan."
"Don't hang up."
"Why?"
"I'm not sleepy, and I have nothing to do."
"I'm not your pastime."
"You're the best form of entertainment I've found."
"Goodbye!" I hang up. Damn him, at least he didn't let me forget he was a jerk. The phone vibrates a few more times; I put it in my purse and try to forget.

"Kate?" Lisa comes out of the bathroom with Britney and Emily. "What are you doing here?"
"Nothing. I was already going back to..."
"John?" She laughs. "What did you say to him?"
I made a face at her.
"So, it's true that there's a hottie waiting for you, Kate?" Britney says while supporting Emily.
"I don't think you'll like to know what Emily told me you were doing in the bathroom." She laughs.
"It's clearly visible that we can't take what she said into consideration."
"I'm fine," Emily says, but it's noticeable that she can't stand.
"Well, I think the night is over for this little girl here," Britney says, putting her arm around Emily. "I'll make sure she gets home safely. You can stay and have fun."
"I can take her." I offer. It would be great to leave.
"No," Lisa says.
"Lisa's right, Kate. You have a hottie waiting for you, go back there."
"You'll pay for this." I narrow my eyes at Lisa. After saying goodbye to them, I return to the bar, where John is waiting for me.
"Sorry for the delay, I ran into the girls."
"I thought you had run away." I wish it was Kent. Damn. Why did he have to be so beautiful and polite? "And your friends?"
"They went home, but Lisa should still be around."
"Then, do you want to go somewhere else?"
"I promised Lisa I'd go back with her." I'm becoming quite a good liar lately.
"No problem. I was here thinking, and I don't know much about your family."
"I don't think there's much to know. My dad still lives in Texas, and I don't have any siblings. My mom... well, she died a few years ago."
The silence extends for a few moments, but I make a point of forgetting the subject quickly.
"And you? Your parents?" I ask.
"My parents live in Italy. They rarely come to America. I have a brother who also lives in Italy; he often visits me."
"Younger brother?"
"Yes."
"It must be incredible to have a brother."
"In most cases, but having a girlfriend seems more interesting to me," he said.
"You know exactly what that experience is like," she replied.
"Not with you."
After a few more minutes of conversation and some direct talk about sex and dating, Lisa came over to us, having already had enough to drink, I believe.
"How are you guys doing?" she asked with a too-big smile.
"I think the night's over for tonight," I said to John, and he laughed.
"Can you take care of her while I go to the bathroom?"
"Of course."
"I don't need him to take care of me."
"Of course not," I said, winking at John."

NATHAN

I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep, especially knowing that she's somewhere surrounded by animals, waiting for a simple opportunity to attack. Damn, Collins for not letting me sleep. No sex and was mainly worried about her. I grab my phone and search for her contact again. She doesn't answer, but I call again.
"Hello!" A strange woman's voice answers on the second ring. Probably one of her friends.
"Can I speak to Kate?"
"Kate's not here right now." The girl is definitely completely drunk.
"Where is she?" Shit! Is she drunk too?
"No! No!" I hear strange noises.
"Sorry, Katherine can't answer right now." Fuck! It was a man's voice. Shit! Where is Kate? Damn it, where are you, Collins?
"Where is Miss Collins?"
"Ryan?" Does he know me? Wait... I know that voice.
"Kent?" Holy shit! How? Did she lie?
"Your assistant is busy at the moment, Ryan." Shit! This has to be a damn joke! He must be laughing at me. I hang up before I regret doing something crazy. Damn, Collins! Damn, Kent! Damn, liar. I won't be able to sleep now.
I get up, leaving my room. I need a drink. In the living room, I grab two bottles of whiskey and sit on the floor in front of the windows, watching nothing in particular, among the hundreds of buildings and lights of New York. She deceived me. She was with Kent, but who was the other woman?
Alcohol? Sex? A threesome? Impossible. Or not? Damn, Collins! I never imagined this of you. Even being the shrew that you are. Damn it! She was sleeping here with me yesterday, in my bed. What to do? Nothing Ryan. What can you do? Kill her.

KATE

"What do you mean?" My bile was in my throat again.
"She answered the phone, so I said you were busy." Shit! He's going to freak out. He's going to want to kill me.
"Let's go, Lisa!" I grab her purse and keys.
"Bye, John. Thanks." I say without looking at him, pulling Lisa. I'm screwed.
"See you later, Kate."
Shit. Shit. It's the only thing I can think of, followed by scenes of Ryan choking me, as I drive back home. Lisa sleeps in the passenger seat. After putting Lisa to bed while thinking about how I'm going to explain to Nathan, I dial his number for the eighth time. He doesn't answer. After three more attempts, I'm about to give up when he finally answers.
"What do you want?" His tone of voice betrays his drunkenness.
"Have you been drinking?"
"Fuck it! You're a damn liar."
"Whatever you're thinking, I didn't sleep with Kent."
"You're lying again."
"Ryan, are you drunk?"
"Seriously, Kate? Threesome? If you had told me, I would have called another girl." I almost laugh.
"What? What is he talking about? He thinks I slept with John and... Oh, Lisa answered first."
"I just didn't know you were into it."
"Ryan, I don't think I can talk to you now in this state, you better go to sleep."
"Sleep! Seriously? I'm not an idiot, Kate."
"He's an idiot! I didn't sleep with Kent or anyone. But if you don't believe me, what can I do? I'm not going to try to convince you. I have to sleep, you drunk."
"Where were you? Who was the girl? Why did the damn Kent answer? Why was he with you? Why the hell did you lie?"
"Shit, Ryan! It was just a misunderstanding. I didn't lie, I just didn't tell you because you wouldn't like to know that John was there. Lisa answered the phone because I was in the bathroom. John just wanted to keep Lisa from talking nonsense to someone because she was very drunk."
"The damn guy was mocking me."
"Don't be paranoid, Ryan."
"Paranoid? Shit! You're crazy, girl! You have no idea how screwed I am now because of you."
"I'm not lying, Ryan. I'm at home. Away from Kent, and I need to sleep now."
"You can't do this kind of thing, Collins."
"I just went out with my friends. John being there was just a big coincidence. Enough explaining myself! You're drunk and you're an idiot." Did he drink because of John? Damn! That really got to him.
"You deserve a good punishment now, Collins."
"I would love to hear you talk to me about this punishment, but I'm too tired, and if you want to know, a big part of it is your fault, I can still feel that you were here yesterday and earlier today."
"Don't do this to me, Collins."
"Do what?" I provoke.
"Turn me on while being away."
"Good night, Ryan."
"See you tomorrow. Early." I hang up with a smile. You're a nerve-wracking test, Ryan. This conversation will give me good, hot dreams tonight.
Mr. Ryan
