Chapter 54
Lsabella's pov :
I felt my hands and feet go cold, although I deeply understood how important decisive judgement and execution was to a pack leader, but Olivia was someone Jasper loved dearly, he had tricked me into coming to the Blue Moon Pack to save Olivia in the first place, so why was it that two months had passed so quickly that he could kill Olivia and then do this plainly tell me.
That's the person Jasper loved so much? Wasn't it because of Jasper's overwhelming preference for Olivia that so many of his unhinged, maniacal actions, along with the hand around my neck and my numb knees, were so much more than that? Was it just these few short days that all the punishment and reprimand I had received at Blue Moon Pack before had been a complete joke?
But was it really just something that happened in a very short period of time, not even two months at all, after I had escaped the Blue Moon Pack, not knowing what had happened between Olivia and Jasper, perhaps something that Olivia had done to betray Jasper? Did Jasper just execute Olivia?
I would still find it hard to accept that such extreme and insane favouritism could end like that? He could be so decisive with the woman he loved, it was hard for me not to feel worried, although I wouldn't be behind it, Jasper and I were both Alpha, and there would inevitably be a dispute of interest between our two packs, what would happen to me then?
My mind is flooded with memories of what happened before, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for me to understand Jasper as a person, he seems to be very affectionate, yet cold and dry, having killed the object of his affection for many years. But when he recounted the incident to me, his tone was flat as if he was saying goodnight to each other.
I looked up at Jasper, who had stared at me with a sullen gaze for the entire time I was thinking, saying nothing, just watching me silently from across the table.
Jasper suddenly pointed to the spot where his heart was, "Your heart, has it recovered?"
I froze for a moment before I realised he was referring to the attempted incision on me earlier, but that was for Olivia too...
"Luckily, it's fully recovered."
"I'm really sorry, I did take Olivia's word for it too lightly...would you like to come back to me please? Let me make it up to you."
My eyes widened in disbelief as I looked over at Jasper, who was still looking at me calmly, but his gaze seemed to have softened.
Even though I was such a slow-witted person, I could sense something different in Jasper's frequent requests. It was an equally terrifying thing for me: the
Did Jasper really think he was in love with me?
Perhaps because Jasper could sense what was going on in my mind, or perhaps because he felt that enough had been laid, Jasper suddenly raised his hand and grabbed the one I had placed on the table.
The thoughts I envisioned in my head made me alert in a split second and I pulled my hand out the moment Jasper's grip tightened.
Jasper hadn't expected such a reaction from me and his hand stopped in mid-air in embarrassment.
I was also shocked by my overreaction, and just as I was contemplating how I should subtly change the subject, Jasper laughed softly.
"I'm sorry, I'm the one who offended. I just really wanted to tell you that I love you, and that much is true."
I took a deep breath and tried to make my peace with the hard truth, I couldn't deny the tenderness and favour that Jasper had something to give me, especially the closer we got to the full moon, he was almost helping me get the moonstone with indulgence, even though in the end the stone was a fake and he could have been trying to steady me, I couldn't ignore it all, I remembered it all.
Yet Jasper was too difficult for me to understand and grasp, and his understanding of love, including his possessiveness of me, was something to question.
When he and I were still in the MATE relationship Moon Goddess had acknowledged, he had brought me a complete deception from start to finish, and now that I was his brother's MATE, the first negotiation he had held overnight, when he had come all the way here with his troops, had expressed only one thing from start to finish, that he had suddenly found love for me.
How was I supposed to believe that this was all genuine on his part and not just another use or a fight with his brother?
Good thing Jasper wasn't obsessed with getting an answer out of me right away; he looked up and scanned behind me.
"Where's Xavier? I'm surprised he didn't accompany you out to meet me?"
I still maintained my outwardly subdued composure, "The combined armies of several wolf packs on the East Continent have pressed up to the Blood Moon Pack's borderline, where could we squeeze two men into the negotiations?"
"He's gone to the plains I think, it's rare that he's still willing to take that witch's word for it."
I was in shock, so Jasper already knew everything? Had he received the witch's notice too?
I looked to Jasper to get an answer from him. But Jasper didn't say anything, leaving me with a mysterious smile.
"What do you want?"
I looked at him coldly. The moonstone's secret couldn't be kept for long, and I could only pray that Xavier would be back in time.
"Don't you get it?" Jasper suddenly put away all his patience and stared at me with slight anger, "I don't care about the moonstone at all, I only care about you, and excluding Olivia who fooled me earlier, the only person I can care about is you."
I closed my eyes, whether Jasper was now genuinely coming for peace or another lie, I didn't want to count anymore.
I no longer had a MATE relationship with Jasper, and I had confirmed that Xavier was my MATE, so what else could I link Jasper and I with?
"So what," I opened my eyes and looked back at Jasper with the same cold eyes that Jasper used to gaze at me with, "we are no longer in a mate relationship, and without Moon Goddess' blessing, what could possibly link us together? Accept your fate, Jasper, you're just resigned to losing to your brother."
"I didn't lose!"
Jasper was spurred on and immediately jumped up from his seat, the seat fell backwards with the impact and landed with a loud thud the moment it hit the ground.
People on both sides of the table went on alert.
I raised my hand to signal the clan to back off and then stood up as well, "I don't care if that's what you think, but I just wanted to tell you that you had your chance, but you didn't value me and then you don't have a chance now, we're done."
I wasn't waiting for Jasper to react and was about to turn and leave.
"It's not over, Lsabella! What else do you think I brought so many people here for?"
Jasper's eyes were paranoid and he flashed a cruel smile towards me, "There's an impromptu Alpha meeting here tomorrow morning at eight, all the major Alpha's will be there, make sure you're not late."
This was Jasper, a complex being, gentle and cruel, but I would not be at his mercy as I had been two months before.
