Chapter 16 A Change Of Heart?
While they were at this, a harsh siren rang outside, and Elizabeth's phone rang at the same time.
Elizabeth answered the phone call and said a few words to the person on the other end of the phone line.
''The police are here. Jerry, please watch over her for now while I go and talk to them,'' Elizabeth said.
''Okay,'' Jerry Dank said with a nod.
After Elizabeth left, the room was so quiet that one could hear the sound of needles falling.
Jerry Dank leaned towards Audrey slightly, and applied the medicine on the wound on her forehead. They were so close to each other to the extent that they could hear each other's breathing.
Audrey closed her eyes tightly while this was going on. She dared not look into Jerry Dank's eyes, so she stayed stiff while he dabbed her wound. She felt as if she was being tortured.
She had never felt that time could pass by so slowly. She was sitting under Jerry Dank's focused gaze for about one minute, but to her, it had been centuries past. She was so nervous, her palms were soaking wet.
''That's alright,'' Jerry Dank said after a while of cleaning her wound.
Audrey felt very relieved and got up quickly, ready to go out. His cold voice tickled her ears and all she could think of was how to run away from that place.
While she was leaving, she didn't care to look down at her feet, and so she stumbled into the first-aid box and there was a mild accident.
The moment a steady and solid arm supported her, Audrey turned and met Jerry Dank's intense eyes. She could not stand him as both of them peered into their eyes, and her entire body shuddred as if she had been shocked by high voltage electricity.
Soon after, Audrey Turnah ran away like a scared rabbit.
She knocked the first aid box over, and spilled the medicine that were inside.
Jerry Dank frowned.
''What's wrong?'' He asked Audrey.
Audrey hurriedly squatted to put back the medicine that she had spilled from the first aid box.
''No, nothing...'' she lied in response.
Her words were unconvincing.
Jerry Dank stared at her, worried that there was more to her actions than just nothing, but luckily for Audrey, someone's phone rang and distracted them, thereby easing the tensed atmosphere.
It was Elizabeth Coker that called Jerry Dank.
''Jerry, the police asked me and the driver to join them to the police station. I ma leaving with them now, so you can come later...'' Elizabeth said.
Jerry Dank agreed.
The police station was not far at all. It would typically take a ten minutes walk to get there, and Jerry was on his way, while Audrey Turnah followed behind him. She maintained a balanced distance, as she dared not get too close to him, nor stay too far from him either.
There was a grave silence between them while they walked to the police station.
Jerry Dank could not help but stop and turn to look at Audrey Turnah.
Under the dim street light, Audrey's blue eyes shone back at Jerry like the stars, and her messy black hair was draped over her shoulder.
Audrey could not tell if it was as a result of cold or fear, but she cuddled herself. She wrapped her arms around herself and looked pitiful as she was unsure of Jerry Dank's position towards her.
Seeing that Jerry Dank had stopped walking forward, Audrey stopped walking as well, and looked at him with fear in her eyes.
''Why don't you just leave? Please?'' Audrey said to Jerry Dank.
Jerry Dank took off his jacket and tossed it at her.
''Walk faster,'' he said as the jacket landed on Audrey's head. She was smacked to the moment by the sudden pang of scent from Jerry Dank's coat that was akin to how a boy oozed.
Gentle and sweet. Like after shave.
Audrey subconsciously remembered the scene where Jerry Dank draped his jacket over Elizabeth at the hospital.
To her surprise, she was also getting the same treatment, even though her own condition was that he threw the jacket on her head instead of wrapping it gently around her.
Usually, Jerry Dank treated her with disdain. He despised her and never failed to maltreat her any time he had the chance as she always happened to disgust him just by her presence.
But he was treating her the exact opposite way this time around. Was it because she saved Elizabeth?
Seeing that Audrey just stood there in a daze, Jerry Dank grew weary.
''Will you hurry up so that we can meet the police? If you don't want to put on the jacket, at least you can walk faster so that we can get to the police station on time,'' Jerry Dank said to Audrey.
Audrey hesitated for a moment, and then she put on the jacket anyway. The faint smell of Jerry's scent engulfed her and made her uncomfortable, but she could not deny the warmth that the jacket brought her, so she left it on.
Seeing that Jerry Dank was being nice to her, she relaxed around him a little.
''I didn't expect that you and Elizabeth lived so close to each other. I am only so lucky to have your attention on this occasion,'' Audrey said.
Jerry Dank turned around and glanced at Audrey lightly. His facial expression showed that he was a little unclear concerning what she said.
''Why?'' Jerry Dank asked her.
Audrey was also taken aback by his question. Why was he asking her why concerning something that was so obvious.
''Why are you asking me why?'' Audrey dared to ask Jerry back.
''You should have left Elizabeth alone,'' Jerry Dank said with a deep voice, changing the topic of discussion abruptly.
Audrey felt a pang of guilt concerning what Jerry Dank just said.
''The situation was urgent at the time. The only thing that flashed through my mind was to save Elizabeth,'' Audrey replied.
