#Chapter 28: Dog-sitting is Not as Easy as it Looks
Ava
I was humming to the radio as I pulled up to Elijah’s house. His secretary told me that our boss had left his car for me to travel to his resident. I thought it was nice of him to not only pay me for dog-sitting his pets but for him to go the extra mile a supply me a vehicle to drive from my studio to the house place and to location where we were shooting the series.
When I pulled into the location the the navigation system told me that I arrived to; my jaw dropped.
THIS IS HIS HOUSE!!!! I shouted in the car. Good thing no one wa around to hear me scream hysterically.
Don’t get me wrong Jacob’s pack house was a two story house but that was occupied by the highest three ranks in his pack: Beta, Gamma, and of course the Alpha. From my understanding Elijah lived by himself. I mean I just found out recently that he owed dogs.
I got out of the car and made my way up the drive way. I punched in the code attached to the side pane of the house. Elijah instructed that he left the spare key for me to come and go.
I gave him a quick text as I entered his house.
[SMS to Elijah 👿] Welcome to the life of the obscenely wealthy.
From the looks of the layout it had to be at least three bedrooms. There was a good size living room that was plainly decorated in beige and teal colors.
The kitchen was modern styled with an island in the middle. All the appliances were particularly brand new. Sitting on a vertical length cabinet sat a mini fridge with varies drinks inside.
My phone vibrated telling me that I had a text message.
[SMS from Elijah 👿] I am not obscenely wealthy. At best I am moderately comfortable.
[]SMS to Elijah👿] yeah keep telling yourself that. while your drive to your company in your flashy sports car.
I laughed at his gull to state he was not wealthy. That’s when it hit me, I was back to flirting with him again.
“Cut it out Ava. He is the Alpha of the Enforcers. If he finds out who you really are he’ll have you executed for illegal travelling.” I paused when I hear a rumbling noise.
“Or worse Elijah will send me back to Jacob.” I opened the door to find two very large dogs caged in metal barred kennels.
“These are the dogs…” I stopped were I noticed something. Don’t get me wrong I have been out of the mortal realm for a few years but I remebered what dogs looked like. These were not cute and cuddly pets. These were slobbing, growling and territoral wolves.
This bastard has me babu-sitting wolves. I thought as both animals looked into my eyes. They held my stare as a means of intimidation. It would work if I were not a LUNA.
I took a breath and walked towards their cages. The first wolf-dog was tan brown with splotches of white and black in its fur. The other was completely black except its paws where the color of mud. They both had collars with tags attached.
As I reached for their leashes attached to a hook on the wall I heard a creak. I slowly turned to see that one of the cages was ajar’d open. Slowly the tanned colored wolf stepped out of its cage. It barred its teeth at me.
Apparently it did not take kindly to me asserting my authority towards it. Without warning the animal lunged at me. This was all the while the black wolf was hitting against its own cage trying to free itself. I fell to the ground as I ducked out of the mongrel’s way. I was on the opposite side of the beast.
Unfortunately I was able to read its tag, it read Connor. He named you after to wolf lover. Ironic. I felt a drop of something fall on my exposed shoulder.
I touched it and saw what it was; slobber. As I looked up I saw the red colored collar that was around the wolf that was still in its cage. The tag for this behemoth said Eyolf which was Lucky Wolf in Norwegian.
If I survived this Elijah and I would have a long talk about his definition of “dogs.” As Connor made another lunged for me I felt my wolf claw her way to the surface. I complied as I felt my skin crawl and my nails extend to claws.
Tide had taken over and let out a deep rumble in her chest. This at first did not register to the animals. Then Eyolf fell to his knees in the cage. Connor looked at the other dog and at me. He was fighting my call.
I let out a louder and deeper rumble and as a result Connor whined and laid down on his belly. He pushed his paws over his face and kept his eyes to the ground.
I dropped to the floor in exhaustion. Both dogs became submissive recognizing me as their superior. At least I knew they were dogs. The two of them were just cross breed with a wolf and dog; whomever did this was playing with a dangerous fire.
With the dogs intimated by my presences I got my breathing to normal, but I felt my body slipping. Before slipping into unconscious I had a thought:
This was the first time I passed out after using the call of the Luna.
Something is wrong with me.
* * *
There was a wet substance that kept pushing itself on my face; specifically my cheek.
I groaned as I was forced to wake up, in front of my was a tamed Connor attempting to wake me up.
“Huh you are a sweetheart aren’t you,” I said as I brush its fur. It whined and yawned as I pushed myself to a sitting position. I looked over to see Eyolf stretching and yawning. HE was still in his cage.
I stood up and walked over the the opposite wall where the leashed were still attached to the hook on the wall.
I grabbed both of them and signaled for Connor to come towards me. He slowly bowed his head and allowed me to snapped the metal latch to his collar. I signaled for him to sit as I unlocked Eyolf out of his cage and repeated the initial process.
As we exited the dogs private room and into the kitchen I grabbed a bowl from the cabinets, filled it with water and let them have a drink before we went for the walk. I grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and took a gulp to cure myself of cottonmouth. I whistled to both dogs so we could make our way outside.
Aside from Eyolf and Connor trying to eat me, they were very well mannered and trained dogs. But I could not help but wonder did Elijah anticapate for this to happen. Was this a test up to see ….but to see what.
Elijah had never done anything out of the ordinary around me, aside from cuddling with me on his sofa. Maybe I should tell him what happened. I pushed that thought aside.
What if this was to see if I was a supernatural being? The dogs had freaked out on me when they saw me.
We entered the manor and I escorted both dogs back to their kennels. I took their dog bowls and filled them with the food (wet and dry) along with water. I placed it in their kennels. And turned off the lights.
A blue light had came on and illuminated the room; this must have been their routine because as soon as the light came on both dogs circled around their beds and fell asleep.
Just as I closed the door a notification buzzed on my phone that was tucked in my back pocket.
[SMS from Elijah 👿] I hope my boys aren’t giving you too much trouble.
I frowned at the text. I did not know if he was baiting me to confess or if he was teasing me. What I did know was that I was not going to fall for it. I swiped that notification without even opening that text and called Sally instead.
While Eliajh did leave me his car to use. I did not feel well enough to drive to the set. I was dizzy from both walking the dogs and the Luna call to calm them down.
My phone rang and I prayed to the Moon Goddess that it was not Elijah.
The caller id flashed Sally.
“Hello, Ava.”
“Hi, Sally.”
“YOu texted saying you need a ride? Is everything alright?”
I did not want to worry Sally but I knew I needed to tell her something.
“I’m alright, its just not use to this area and I didn’t feel comfortable driving in the dark.”
“That’s right I forgot the set said they were filming the next few scenes at night for the effect. Don’t worry I will swing by and come get you. Text me Mr. Connery’s address and I will be on my way.”
I took a sigh of relief, for some reason I was happy that Sally did not know were Elijah lived. Eventhough I wanted to looked around the house more I knew that I did not have the strength to push myself up the stairs. Hell I barely had the strength to keep myself awake when I was in the car with Sally.
Sally had noticed that I was dozing off, but I told her that Elijah’s dog had worn me out with the walk. We laughed it off, but I was not lying trying to subdue those crossbreeds did leave me out.
The last time I used my call of the Luna was when I was helping a new mother with her newborn. She had not been sleeping. They had told me that my call could soothe both the mother and the baby.
With a hum and song the mother had fallen asleep on her couch while the baby had fallen asleep in my arms. I had her husband carry her to their bed and I sat with the baby in the nursery until I was sure that she was asleep. Looking at the baby sleeping so peacefully encourage Jacob for us to start trying for a baby of our own.
We did until rumors flooded that Alex was coming back with her own bundle of chaos. A child between her and Jacob.
As we pulled up to the set, I glossed over what it would be like to look after a child of my own.
