Chapter 106: Priscilla

*Who should that crazy bitch fear more? Tank? Leo? Taz? Or Molly? – Toad*

“I swear, that one sounded like a gun shot.” Law said of the noises coming from the construction equipment.

Athos looked at his phone as it rang in his hand. The picture of Priscilla making a funny face somehow seemed ominous.

“Hey, Priss, she’s-"

Law could hear the girl yelling on the other end of the line but could not quite understand what she was saying. Athos was not having much more luck.

“You’re not making any sense. Calm down and tell me again.” Athos told her.

Law came down the ladder as color drained from the younger man’s face.

“Call 911. We’re on our way down.”

Dropping the roller on the ground, not caring about the mess it might make, Athos made his way to the hall and then the stairs. Law could only follow as the other man dialed another number.

“What the fuck is going on?” he demanded as they both ran down the main staircase.

They came out to the right side of the front common area. They could already see a group gathering near the security office at the front door.

The words that Athos said next, had Law’s heart stopping in his chest.

“Toad? Evie’s been shot. I don’t know. I don’t know. Fuck, Toad. Get my brother. And get Molly. Priss saw it.”

They burst through the door of the secured entry to a hive of activity as coaches, teachers and staff all tried to help. Or just to look.

There in the area between the two sets of doors lay Evie in a growing puddle of blood.

“Get Priss.” Law ordered as he and Athos forced their way into the crowd. He pulled off his shirt and pressed it against her shoulder.

Athos stepped over the spilled drinks and dropped bags of food. All of the teasing from earlier had been forgotten.

“Come here, baby girl.” Athos pulled Priscilla into his chest and held her as she cried. She was trying to talk but her babbling was incoherent. He simply held her close, stroked her hair and murmured things that he was not certain about.

“It’s okay. She’s going to be fine.” Light press of lips against her dark hair. “Evie is strong.” Soft shushing noises. “It’s all going to be alright.”

The whole time he held her close and rubbed gentle circles on her back.

Athos had to be strong. He couldn’t let her know that he was just as scared as the was. He couldn’t face the idea of Evie dying.

He certainly could not think about how much it would devastate his brother.

Meanwhile, on the floor, brother did not even try to hide his distress from his sister. He kept pressure on the wound while holding her down.

“You have to stay still.” He whispered as a tear fell out of his eye. “You can’t leave me. I’m not ready to face this world without you.”

Sirens grew louder and then a patrol car drove right up to the bottom of the stairs to the building. Another joined it and then they could hear radios inside the school halls.

Once the police were certain it was safe, the ambulance joined the patrol cars.

Reluctantly, Law let the paramedics take over. He stepped away but stayed in sight.

“Sir?” the tall blonde paramedic nudged Law out of the way.

“She’s my sister.” He whispered as if saying it would make everything better.

He answered their questions the best that he could. Not only was he not certain on some of it, the fog he found himself in complicated thinking.

Twenty years in the Coast Guard had not prepared him for this. Nothing could have prepared him for seeing any of his sisters laying in a puddle of their own blood.

Once they had loaded her into the ambulance, he got in the back and clicked on the contact of Dr. Dad on his phone.

“Evie’s been shot.” The sobs ran through him unchecked.

The last thing that Athos saw as the doors were closed was Law handing the phone to the paramedic. His other hand gripped Evie’s tightly.

A cop approached Athos and Priscilla to get their statements. He told the woman that he had been upstairs. When she started to ask Priscilla questions, he angrily cut her off. When she got an attitude with him, he simply said that Priscilla was a minor and her dad was on his way.

It was less than a minute later that they could hear the familiar roar of bikes. They all parked as close as possible and then rushed up to the barricade.

As Athos walked Priscilla over to Molly, the same police woman approached trying to stop them. “Look, I get it,” he said gently pushing past the uniformed officer. “That’s her dad and uncles. Which one do you want to keep away from her?”

“Let her dad through.” Another officer called out.

The uniformed officer scowled at the woman in a Monroe Police Department polo. The other woman didn’t flinch and simply ordered her to collect evidence.

The Ridgeview officer did not appreciate getting orders from another department. But the school was in a mutual response area, and the other officer was higher ranking.

Molly rushed to his daughter who was quickly transferred into his arms. Crushing her to him, he let out a sigh of relief.

“My sweet little pretty, daddy has you.” He murmured against her hair. “Daddy’s here, baby.”

“Do you know who did this?” the second female officer gently asked. “And any idea why?”

Wrapped in the security and comfort of her dad’s arms, Priscilla whispered the one word that Evie had said in surprise.

“Joy.”
