Chapter 244: DCSS

*Werewolf, you are missing one hell of a plot twist. – Karan*

Karan peeled her orange for lunch. She had decided that if she had another apple, her first son would be born with a pot on his head and walk across the country planting apple seeds. Zee took pity on her and ordered oranges and placed them in her lunch.

Could you really count a piece of fruit as a meal? Grinning, she imagined Cookie's reaction to the wedding dress that she wanted. Completely worth it.

Her alarm went off and she turned the security cameras to the back employee entrance and hallway. Right on time, Chance pulled into the parking lot. He sat on his bike as he removed his helmet and gauntlets. A moment later, as Chance turned off his engine, Rye pulled into her spot.

“Ladies and gentlemen, today’s shit show is brought to you by the letters F and U and the number two.” Law said as he sat in the pink paisley chair and faced the screen.

Karan laughed as she used the remote to turn on the sound. Then she squealed happily when Law handed her a bean burrito from Taco Bell.

“You need protein. And not just what Cookie gives you.” He winked at her as she unwrapped it and took a big bite.

“Shhhhh, the show is on.” She said with her mouth full.

“How’s Michael?” Chance asked Rye as they walked towards the door. He reached around her and pulled open the door after she swiped her card.

“Thank you.” Rye said as she went through the door.

“You’re welcome.” He smiled at her.

“Is he flirting?” Law whispered.

“I think so.” Karan whispered back.

“He’s doing well.” She stopped in the spot that they almost always argued at. “He has a little bit of a respiratory infection.”

“Is that serious?” Chance asked as he reached up and tucked her grey patch behind her ear. His fingers gently caressed the patch of hair.

In the office, Karan and Law looked at each other in shock.

“What are you doing?” Rye asked quietly.

Chance looked at her in confusion and shock. His hand fell to his side. “I’m sorry.”

“Does this have instant replay?” Law asked as he ate his own burrito.

“I wish.” Karan muttered.

“I’m sorry.” Chance said again. “I know, you don’t like being touched.”

“I don’t.” Rye admitted softly.

“Can you hold him, yet?” Chance asked her.

“I can. But not for very long now.” Rye smiled as she pulled her phone out and pulled up the hospital app with the live feed. “Maybe once the infection is cleared up.”

Chance moved closer so that he could see the phone.

Karan and Law watched as he stood carefully making sure that he did not touch her again. She wadded up the wrapper of her burrito and tossed it into the trashcan, barely taking her eyes off the screen.

“I’m not sure what I’m enjoying better. That damned burrito or today’s show.”

“No shit.” Law agreed as he tossed his own trash over the desk into the can and unwrapped a second burrito.

“He looks bigger.” Chance said on the screen.

“Yeah. He’s gaining weight and keeping it on.” Rye told him and the phone chirped.

“What does that mean?” Chance asked, pointing at the phone.

“It’s time for a breathing treatment.” Rye explained.

“Oh.” Chance said as Rye put her phone back in her pocket. “Do you spend all of your lunch at the hospital?”

“Yeah.” She said stepping away from him. “I check on him and then I check in with my professors.”

“Teaching, right?”

“Yeah. My aunt Tilly was a teacher.” Rye said and he heard the sadness in her voice.

“My sister was a teacher for a while. She has a restaurant now.”

“My sister has an arrest warrant.” Rye offered.

Karan and Law snickered in the office.

Chance smiled at Rye. “My dad and grandfather had a few of those.”

“My mom had a collection.” Rye said. “My sister always said that I was a copy of our dad, and she was a carbon copy of our mom.”

“You have his gray patch.” Chance said as his eyes moved over to her hair. His fingers twitched, he really wanted to touch her hair again.

“How the hell does he know that?” Karan asked as she grabbed her lemon water.

“Picture in her apartment.” Law answered, reaching for his own drink.

“How… how do you know that?” Rye asked nervously.

“I saw the picture in your apartment.”

“Oh, yeah. Pisa.”

“Yeah.” Chance leaned against the wall. “Will you let me know if you need anything?”

“Like for work?” Rye asked, confused.

“No, for your son.” Chance replied.

“Whaaaaat?????” Karan squealed.

“The fuck?” Law added.

“Why?” Rye asked from the screen.

“Good question, sister.” Karan called out to the screen.

“They can’t hear you.” Law reminded her.

“I just want to make sure that he has a good start.” Chance shrugged.

“That’s good, because I’ve called him a fucking idiot a lot lately.” Karan laughed.

“I guess, yeah.” Rye told Chance on the TV. “I need to get to my class.”

“I should probably get back to my office.” Chance agreed, standing up straight.

“I’ll talk to you later.” Rye said nervously as she turned to go upstairs.

“She’s too damned sweet.” Karan said as she and Law watched Chance move to watch Rye go up the stairs.

“He was checking out her ass.” Law laughed.

“That’s good. I was starting to think he’d become honorable or some shit.” Karan said as she muted the TV and put the cameras back on rotation.

“Not that slut.” Law said gathering up his trash and throwing it away.

“Anyway, what are you doing here?” Karan asked as she saw Chance walk into the common room and head for his office.

“Just came by to watch the Daily Chance Shit Show.” He admitted. “And bring you some real food. You do know that Cookie fell in love with all of you and not the skinny you that you’re trying to be, right?”

“I just want to look good for him.” She grinned. "And you should see this dress."

“Then quit starving yourself. You don’t even have a dress yet. And if I have to hear about him missing your curves one more time…”

“You’ll what?” she purred.

“Baby girl, I’m sure you could rock my world. But I don’t think that you’d like what I would do to you.”

“What would you do to me?” She asked huskily.

“You ever take a self-defense class?” Law asked as disturbed began to play in Chance’s office.

“Yeah?” Karan said looking over at the other office where Chance was already working.

“You ever fuck during it?” Law shifted in the chair as he hardened in his jeans.

“Ummm, no.”

“And that’s why I don’t think you’re down for what I like.”

“What the hell is he doing?” Karan asked, completely confused.

“Maybe she’s not infuriating anymore.”
