Chapter 159: Baby Vanessa

*Yes. If there’s a chance for another baby to live, yes, I’ll donate her organs. – Robert Lynn*

“You have questions.” Siobhan said not looking up from the tablet in her hand.

“And you say that you don’t have the gift.” Knuckles grinned.

Siobhan handed the tablet to one of the volunteers and motioned for Knuckles to follow her. Silently, she led the way to her office overlooking the warehouse of donated food. Flipping the sign next to the door, she waited for him to enter the office. She then followed and closed the door behind her.

“What all do you know?” She asked closing the blinds.

“She has the ability to talk to the dead. Can read palms and cards. Sees in what she calls the shadows.”

Siobhan sat behind her desk and he sat in the chair on the opposite side.

He hesitated for just a moment. “Pagan suggested that I go talk to his sister.”

“Ciara?” Siobhan asked and Knuckles nodded with a soft yeah. “You should.”

She rested her arms on her desk and picked up a small fidget toy. Absently, her fingers worked the cube.

“My sister and her husband came to visit me. It was right after I had James. Toad was barely above prospect at the time. We had a crappy two-bedroom apartment.”

“Fiona went into labor. She was barely twenty-five weeks. The hospital did everything that they could to stop labor. The same night that Nessie was born, a teenage mother was in a wreck with her newborn.”

“Nessie has the baby’s heart, left lung and name. Vanessa Lynn. Lynn was her last name and she was not even a week old. Mom didn’t make it either. Grandfather donated their organs.”

“Is that why she can…?” Knuckles asked not knowing how to describe her gift.

“Partially. She hears a baby laughing when someone is newly pregnant. Or when they are about to become pregnant.” She answered. “Nessie always says that it’s Vanessa Lynn that she hears.”

She dropped the fidget and picked it up without looking at it.

“As for the rest, it’s just her gift. Or her curse. Depends on the day and what she hears or sees.”

“She said that she doesn’t actually see the ghosts.”

“No. It’s not like in the movies.” Siobhan laughed. “Have you watched any of the paranormal shows with her?”

Knuckles couldn’t help but laugh also. “Yeah. Never seen anyone laugh so hard in my life. The audio recordings really get her going.”

“That’s because it’s like talking on a phone with an earpiece. She hears them in her head. When she was little, she would talk back to them and ask Fiona didn’t you hear them.”

“A little creepy.”

“Grams can also commune. When Nessie was three, they visited her and Grams said that she needed a Crone to teach her.”

“Crone?”

“Maiden, Mother, Crone. Three phases of a woman’s life. She’s still a Maiden, young and learning. I’m a mother, knowledgeable but still learning. Grams is a Crone or a wise woman.”

“Grams didn’t teach her? I thought she said that she was her teacher.” Knuckles asked confused.

“She did. But not until Fiona and Simon divorced and Fee moved back to the Loch.” Siobhan smiled. “You know where Nessie grew up?”

“Fort Augustus, right?”

“Aye. On Loch Ness. The family owns a hotel on the Loch. It’s where she fell in love with food. Well, cooking at least.”

“She really doesn’t eat much.”

“She eats a little of everything. But, no. No real meals.” Siobhan seemed to get lost in thought for a moment. “Moira, Nessie’s old teacher, called my mum. She asked if I had told her about the baby. We haven’t told anyone.”

She gave him a stern look, “Don’t you go saying anything either.”

Knuckles nodded as understanding dawned on him.

“Grams told me years ago that I would have three kids. Moira told me that after the baby comes, there is going to be a dark time.”

“Moira sent me a letter that makes no sense. But I think that when the first event happens it will make more sense. I just don’t know what I’m waiting for.”

“Is it her ex?”

“I’m not sure. But I think he’s part of it. Is your real name Thomas?”

He nodded. “My mom’s maiden name.”

“Well, you’re going to go to Scotland. Get your passport and papers in order.”

“I don’t have a passport.” He admitted.

“Better apply for one.” She advised.
