Chapter 110: Room 403

*Ummm, no offense, but why are we putting a GSW in the maternity – oh, never mind. – Doc*

Doc walked into the waiting room and approached Tank and Ink. He motioned for them to follow.

“Brothers, come with me. Once she’s settled and they’re ready, we’ll bring the rest of you up.” Doc said and Isaac smiled at him.

The room filled with conversation as the three left. Doc led them down the hall and into the elevator. He waited until the other two were inside before pushing the button for four.

“Do you promise that she’s okay?” Ink asked after the doors closed.

“I do.” Doc grinned as the elevator moved upwards. “She’s being kept as a precaution.”

“For complications.” Ink said as the box stopped and the doors opened.

“Yes.” The PA agreed as he led them to room 403 by the nurse’s station. As they walked in, he smiled at the nurse as she charted the vitals. “Hey, Betty. This is Ink and Tank,” he pointed at each one in turn. “They are engaged to your patient.”

“Both of them?” the middle-aged pudgy woman with dark brown hair asked. She finished logging everything on the tablet and smiled at the men. “I don’t blame you, honey. Don’t think I could choose either.”

“They’re pretty great.” Evie agreed.

“I bet they are.” The nurse agreed as she moved to check the sling and bandage. “It’s going to be a little bit before they can get over to do the, uh, test. Your men can stay but you need to get some sleep. I’ll have them bring in another chair.”

“I’ll take a nap if I can get something to eat.” Evie promised.

Chuckling the nurse agreed as she left. A few minutes later, a maintenance man brought in a second reclining chair. As they were setting it in place a nurse’s aid came in with a tray of food.

Evie’s stomach growled at the smell of food. “I don’t know what that is, but I already want seconds.”

The young woman laughed as she moved the over the bed table closer and placed the tray on it. “Chicken spaghetti, salad, mixed vegetables, garlic bread and yellow cake. Also, milk, apple juice and an insulated cup for water.”

She held up the large cup with the hospital name and emblem on it. “Doc, will you show them where to get ice water?”

“Sure thing, Lex. Brothers.” Doc motioned for them to follow him.

“Snacks are in the same room with the ice machine.” Lex said to Evie. “I love this floor. All the food and babies.”

“They don’t know yet.” Evie admitted. “I was waiting for the sonogram.”

“That’s sweet. My dad is in radiology, I’ll see if they can send someone up pretty quick.” She smiled as she quietly left.

When her men and Doc returned, she had already making her way through her tray.

“Were you hungry?” Tank asked setting down the ice water.

“Starving.” She tipped her face up for a kiss from each of her men. “I was craving French fries this morning.”

“I can send a prospect to get some.” Doc offered as Ink took over feeding Evie. Eating with only one hand had it’s limitations.

“Don’t tempt me.” Evie warned as there was a knock on the door. Doc opened the door and let in a middle-aged man with a portable sonogram machine.

“Hi, I’m Todd. Here to do a sonogram. Can I get your name and date of birth?” she gave her information as he moved the table out of his way and plugged up his machine. “Excellent. I’m going to lay you back some. Is everyone staying?”

“Yes.” Evie replied as she adjusted herself to a more comfortable position.

“Alright. I see you have the fashionable Memorial formalwear. We’re just going to expose the belly a little bit here.” He said as lowered the blanket and then carefully lifted the hospital gown.

“Jelly is a little cold.” He warned and she hissed as he squeezed the jelly onto her belly. “Okay, a whole lot cold.”

He looked at the screen and did a few things on the keyboard.

“Okay, so you’ll have to confirm with Dr. Barkley but it looks like you’re about nine weeks.” Tank and Ink stepped closer. “It looks like he was right.”

The man punched a few buttons and the room was filled with the sound of a fetal heartbeat. Evie gasped and Ink took her hand. Tank sat at the foot of the bed and rested his hand on her leg.

Moving the external wand lower the heartbeat faded and then started again. “Baby two.”

“Twins?” Both men whispered.

“Twins.” He confirmed with a smile.

“Can you tell if they’re identical or fraternal?” Evie asked as tears rolled out of her eyes.

“From the distance between them, I would guess fraternal. Again, check with the doctor.”

“Can they get pictures?” Doc asked.

“Absolutely.” Todd confirmed.

“Can we put names on them?” Evie asked and he agreed. “Baby Ink for the one on top and Baby Tank for the lower one.”

Three sets of pictures were printed and the family was given some privacy. Evie wiped off her belly with the towel she was given and Ink adjusted the bed.

Once she was comfortable, they both kissed her and sat on the edge of the bed. Tank rested his large hand on her still flat stomach. Ink caressed her cheek and held her hand.

“You’re having our babies.” Tank said around a lump in his throat.

“You gave me babies.” She smiled. “I love you both so much.”
