Chapter 181: Ring

*We’ve all been there. We want to know if you’ve been there yet. – Karan*

The next morning the girls arrived in the kitchen earlier than usual. The brothers did too. As the dining hall began to fill, Karan picked up Knuckles plate and coffee and motioned for him to follow.

“We can’t question her about the big date and anything after if you’re sitting in there.” Karan said setting the plate and coffee down. “You too, Cookie. I’ll bring you a plate. And you already know that she’s going to decline your proposal.”

James laughed as he sat across from Knuckles and a surly Cookie joined them. “Anything happen afterwards?”

“Nope.” Knuckles said tucking back into his breakfast.

“Don’t think I could go that long without getting laid.” Cookie grumbled as he watched Karan getting his plate together through the window.

“I think you’re proposing to the wrong woman.” Knuckles advised.

Cookie glared at him as Karan brought the plate over and placed it on the table. She rested a hand on his shoulder for just a moment and he touched her hand possessively.

As she walked away, James cocked an eyebrow at the large black man. “Just an observation from a piss ant, but if I had a woman like that, I wouldn’t need another woman.”

“Stay away from her.” Cookie warned.

“I have no intention of going after her.” James said leaning towards the other man. “But she doesn’t plan on staying after she graduates. Better figure out what you are doing before May.”

James stood up and walked into the kitchen as Cookie glared after him. “Okay, sweet little cousin, I get to hear this gossip too.”

Nessie pointed to the stool that Knuckles had previously occupied. “Red lentils soup.”

He sat down and looked at her. “Nana Bee’s recipe?”

“Aye. And minced and tatties. And then shortbread cookies, tea cake and sticky pudding.”

“All your favorites.” He smiled.

She said something in Gaelic. Ignoring the plate that one of the girls set in front of him, he stood up and pulled her into her office.

“Show me.” James said once the door closed. She pulled off her latex gloves and held out her left hand. “Do you feel her?”

“Not her exactly.” Nessie said sitting in the chair and the cats climbed up into her lap. “I feel the love she had for her boys and Taz. Even as she died, she had no regrets, nothing undone. She went thinking of her family. She was at peace with her life.”

“She was at peace with her death? She was murdered.”

“She was at peace with her life. That can be more important than at peace with yer death.” Nessie absently stroked the cat’s black fur.

“And you? You know what will happen.”

“What can happen.” She corrected. “Shadows are mysterious for a reason. No one should know what lies in the future.”

“It’s why you can’t read your own.” He said as he sat on the edge of her desk. “Moira told me that you’ll have to go home soon.”

“Aye.” She whispered. “I feel the pull starting. It’s light. Very faint. But it’s starting.”

“Dad told me about Petros.”

“He’s gonna find me no matter what I do. I can’t hide forever.”

James nodded but did not agree. The tick on his jaw gave away his frustration. He turned and went back through the kitchen towards the dining hall.

“I know.” She mumbled as she went out the other door and down the hall. Just as Toad came into view there was a commotion in the dining hall. They both went through the closest door to them ending up on opposite sides of the fight.
