Chapter 223: Bouncer
*I can think of a dozen better places for me to have an office. Still with lots of girls. – Chance*
“Karan, a girl named Rye is going to call you. Give her an interview.” Tank had said unceremoniously when she answered her phone.
“Do you want me to hire her?” Karan asked as she arranged her desk.
“That’s up to you. I don’t know her, but she seems like she could use a break.”
“Alright. But I’ll have to do a background check. I can’t get around that.” Karan pointed out.
“Got it. Can I ask for one more favor? Interview her without Chance. She seems too innocent for him.”
She had agreed and when the girl called in, Rye gave her an email to send paperwork to. It was all returned quickly enough that Karan was able to get the background check submitted the same day.
With that done, Karan called her back and scheduled an interview. Rye had been excited about it and agreed to meet her the following day.
Karan was impressed with the young woman. It had taken her nearly five years to get her teaching degree. Rye would have hers in three. Plus, she had been working two jobs.
Not only had she been a waitress, but she had also cleaned houses. Now she was looking for a full-time job so that she could adopt her nephew.
About an hour after the interview, the background check came back. After talking with her, Karan was sure that Rye would have nothing against her. There was not even a parking ticket on her report.
Calling Rye back, Karan couldn’t help but smile. “Hi, I was calling to offer you a teaching position for our four-year-olds.”
“Really? Yes. Absolutely. When do I start?”
Laughing, Karan hit the send button on the email.
“I just sent you an email with the paperwork I need. One of the things in there is direct deposit. I need that back so we can send you your sign on bonus.”
Tank and Ink had insisted that Rye received a bonus. There had been a few things that she had said that worried them. Karan told them that they were offering the teachers a thousand-dollar sign on bonus. Without hesitation, they each handed over another thousand dollars.
“Since you’re so close to having your teaching degree, you’re getting a slightly larger bonus.” Karan explained, just in case something got said about her receiving a larger bonus than the other teachers.
Just as with everything else, Rye returned everything in record time. Karan printed everything and signed where she needed to. Gathering the rest of the paperwork, she placed it in a blue file folder. Then she walked across to the other office.
Karan knocked on the open door to Chance's office. Clay had scared him by originally decorating his office with the tree house décor. Chance had brought in posters that belonged more to an automotive shop than a day care.
Deciding that he had pushed it as far as he should, Clay brought in the motorcycles that he had gotten for the office. Metallica played softly on the speaker behind Chance. Grinning, she bit back her laughter.
Scowling, he looked up at her. “If I’m doing books for more than just the daycare, why is my office here? And why *right* here?”
“Because I wanted you here. And I wanted you here at the front.” She answered, handing over the file folder. “Want to know why?”
“Yes. Why in God’s name am I in munchkin hell?”
Having anticipated this, she had been carrying around a printed copy of an article. Karan pulled the folded papers out of her jeans back pocket and handed it over. Still
scowling, he unfolded it and began to scan the article.
She knew the instant that he understood her reasoning. She could see it in his face. He was a slut, but he was also a Saint. The drive to protect ran deep with these men.
Originally it was going to be her and Victoria, the recruited manager, to be in the front offices. Then the daycare she was at doubled her pay and gave her a two-week Caribbean cruise if she stayed.
The new business could not compete with that.
Shortly after that change, the article caught Karan’s attention. An abusive husband went to the daycare that his wife worked at. He made it past the woman working the front desk after backhanding her. Then he dragged his wife out of the backdoor and beat her until the local cops arrived.
“I’m your security.” He finally said.
“Think of it as going back to your bouncer days. Music and bottle service have changed a bit.” She shrugged.
“Yeah.” He opened the folder and glanced through the paperwork. “Toad get with you about more classes?”
“Yeah, management courses. You?” She asked as he began to enter the information.
“HR. Rayanne? Rye-Anne? How the hell do you say this?”
Karan chuckled as she grabbed one of Nessie’s homemade lollipops out of his candy jar. “What she said is Ryan, ignore the extra N and useless E. But she goes by Rye.”
“Simple. I like it. Single. I like that too.” He winked at Karan.
“You, my over sexed friend, stay away from her. She’s not your type.”
Pointing at the paper, he grinned. “Single mom. That’s my type.”
“Not this one.” Karan said before leaving the office.
“You never know!” Chance called after the retreating figure.
He grabbed a lollipop himself before turning on the smart speaker in the other office. The sound of Karan’s laughter could be heard over *2 Live Crew* singing about being horny.
At the top of their lungs, badly off key, and grinning like loons, they both belted out the lyrics.
Knowing that once children were in the building, they could not do this again, they played several more not child appropriate songs. They took turns adding songs to the Playlist. By five they were both in good moods and still jamming as they headed home.
Karan to the Shack and her main man, Cookie. Chance to Pop’s Place and a willing playmate.
Or two.
