Chapter 255: Lockdown
*They took Nessie. Lock everything down. – Werewolf*
Chance didn’t know much about Nessie. She was a hell of a cook, had the ability to talk to the dead and had him figured out when it came to women. And scared the fuck out of him. Literally. He got around her and her expensive knives and his oysters tried to call up his ass for safety.
Nessie was beautiful, had a lyrical Scottish accent and got away with almost anything. That was because she was the niece of Siobhan, the wife of the Shacks president, Toad.
And she had a crazy ex. Not the crazy like he had. No, he had no intention of being the one to change her wayward lifestyle. He planned to kill her for disobeying him and leaving.
Now, he had her.
Since they were not sure of what else would happen, all properties associated with the Saints were locked down tight. Construction stopped, shops closed, and all the brothers checked in at their clubhouses while the families were gathered at the Shack.
The daycare couldn’t close so extra guards from the Wolf Pack were sent. The kids were fascinated by all the men walking around. They all wore cargo pants, charcoal gray polo shirts with the Wolf Pack emblem and jackets with the same emblem and SECURITY on the back.
Parents who asked as they picked up or dropped off were told that the security company was doing an extended drill. Karan and Chance were the only employees that knew the truth. None of the other employees questioned it. Not even when the club girls, old ladies and teens were told to go to the Shack. The other employees were told that as part of the drill, they were asked to check in with Karan once they were home.
There had been foundation issues with the house that Cookie got for Rye. She was still staying at the Shack, but Chance knew that she could not go there. It would cause too many questions. Questions that no one was willing to answer. Questions, that from what she had told him, would make her run away.
“Bear.” Chance motioned for his brother to come to his office.
Since he had gotten out of the Army a few years ago, he had fallen back into club life easily. His hair was growing out and currently was just past his shoulders in a French braid. Bear smiled at the kids at the table that he was coloring at.
“I got to go see the boss man.” He told the kids.
“Mr. Chance isn’t the boss. That’s Miss Karan.” Elizabeth told him. “I’m going to marry Mr. Chance when I get older and then I’m going to be the boss.”
“At least you know how marriage really is.” Bear said as he stood up. Walking over to his brother, he couldn’t help but grin. “I just met your girlfriend.”
“Elizabeth?” Chance asked and Bear nodded. “Yeah, she says she loves me.”
Bear looked at the corkboard that was covered with drawings from the kids. More than half of them had Elizabeth’s name on them. “Stalker, much?”
His younger brother chuckled. “I can’t let Rye go back to the Shack until this has calmed down some. She’ll bolt and run.”
He nodded in understanding. “You got a plan? I need to be able to account for you.”
“Her son is in the hospital. I’ll stay there with her for as long as possible.”
“That works. I need to you to check in arrival and departure.”
“Thanks, Bear.” Chance said as he started to lock up his office and then pushed his brother out. “You want me to turn my tracker on?”
“I don’t. But you know who does.” He grinned and Chance nodded as he pulled out his phone and activated the Wolf Pack Security app and tracker.
He locked his office and headed through the common room. With all the extra security around, the kids were more interested in the new faces than Chance. He was stopped only twice on his way to the stairs. Taking them two at a time, he hoped that Rye had not left yet.
She was finishing up the cleaning when he arrived. Chance knocked on the doorframe before leaning against it. He had an easy smile and was glad that Rye smiled back at him.
“What’s up with this drill?” She asked wiping down a table with disinfectant.
“Straight shot from here to the county jail is about a mile, roughly. There’s a highway and a river between us. But Werewolf is meticulous. He runs surprise drills on his men.” He shrugged a shoulder. It was the truth, just not for this situation.
“Does it happen often?” She locked up the chemicals in the upper cabinet before moving to get her jacket.
“Depends on his mood and what’s going on.” He wanted to go help her with the jacket, it was drilled into him since he was little. She would jump and probably accuse him of something that was very Chance like. A few months ago, she probably would have been right. “Will you have dinner with me tonight? My mom is hanging out with the girls and grandkids. Don’t want to eat alone.”
“Yeah, okay.” She mumbled turning out the lights. Walking down the hall, she waved at the night teacher who was getting the kids ready for dinner. “Better than over cooked fish sticks.”
“I promise, no overcooked seafood.” Chance grinned as he followed her out to the ugly brown Volvo. He really hated that car. “Have you thought about getting a new car?”
“More like a new to me car.” She admitted unlocking her door with the key. After she got in, Rye leaned over and unlocked the passenger door.
“I can talk to Repo and Gearhead. They might have something.” He offered clicking his seat belt and then reaching for the heater knob. If you’re going to ride in a cage, you should at least have heat.
“Just tell me where to go and I’ll talk to them.” She replied pulling out of the lot and turning the heater off.
When she looked away, he started to reach for the heater knob again. “It’s not working.”
Chance turned it back off and swallowed the comment on his tongue. He had never dealt with a woman like her before. She hated to owe anything to anyone.
Even though Cookie and Karan were paying for her meals at the clubhouse, Rye still paid at the end of the week. The few times that they had gone for lunch, it was a fight to pay. She would insist on paying for herself. He finally would get her to agree to let him pay, if she got the tip.
He assumed it had to do with the way that her mother had *paid* her debts. And how she herself had been offered up for them. She had not said anything else since his birthday and he did not press. He had kept it to himself, but wondered how someone so young could handle such events.
“Are you going to Karan’s wedding?” he asked deciding that it was a safe topic.
“I don’t know.” She said turning down the main road.
“Would you go with me?” he asked hopefully.
“Chance…”
“I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I thought if you were there with me, you wouldn’t be.”
Rye pulled into the parking lot and found an empty spot. After turning the engine off and undoing her seat belt, she turned towards him.
“I’m not like your usual girls.”
“Rye, I’m asking a friend to go to a mutual friend’s wedding. I have an ulterior motive, but it’s not what you think.”
Looking at him skeptically, she gave a subtle uh-huh.
“I’m trying to avoid someone. I’m asking you to be my protector.” He finally admitted.
“I’ll see if I can find a nice outfit.” She whispered.
