Chapter 296: Resignation

*I never doubted you. And Karan will be proud of you. – Chance*

Karan glanced up and saw Chance coming to his office through the large communal area. He stopped to admire a drawing that one of the girls drew. Squatting down to her level, he smiled brightly as he spoke with her. Some of the other kids at the table had to show him their pictures also.

Karan knew that he was coming from the nursery where he would have dropped off Michael before coming to his office. Even if he rode his bike, he came in with Rye and was the one to take him to the nursery.

It shocked most of the bunnies how attentive he was as a father. She had seen him with his nieces and nephews. Even if he hadn’t realized it, he wanted to be a father. He wanted to share those same memories that he had of Coon with his own children.

After two more stops, Chance finally made his way into his office. Before anyone else could pounce on him, Karan did. She stepped into his office from the opposite door that he came through.

“Hey, boss.” He grinned as he slid behind his desk and pulled out his laptop.

“How much coffee have you had today?” She grumbled as she sat down in his guest chair.

“Just what we got at the drive thru.” He held up the to go cup with his name written on it.

“What has you in such a good – oh!” She sat up, grinning.

He smiled back at her.

“Well? Deets!”

“You ever know me to kiss and tell?”

“Ugh!” Karan slumped back in the chair. “Fine. Do you know why Rye asked to see me at her lunch break?”

“I do, but I’m not telling you.” He continued to grin at her.

Standing up she gave him a friendly glare. “I don’t know if I can handle you being all happy with hearts in your eyes.”

“Stick around.” He teased back. “I might start farting rainbows.”

“You would.” She said mischievously.

“Whatever is in your head, forget it.” He advised with a smile and a wag of his finger. “I’m still finding confetti from my birthday decorations.”

Karan walked across the lobby with her fingers in her ears and singing “Lalala.” She could hear his laughter following her.

Once she was back in her office, she sent him a message asking if it was good. He replied that he’d had better, but it wasn’t bad for drive through coffee.

“Not what I was asking about!” She yelled out her door laughing.

Karan sent him a message asking if it was his wife’s lunch time yet. Chance advised checking with her boss. Ten minutes later she sent the same message and was advised that he had nothing to do with scheduling and to check with the director.

They continued this throughout the morning. At twenty minutes until Rye’s lunch, Karan received a message stating that there was only twenty minutes until his wife went to lunch. She replied with a smiling emoticon and was informed that it was now nineteen minutes.

He continued with his countdown, and she sent emojis. At fourteen and a half minutes he increased his messages. At ten minutes he went to every fifteen seconds. Then at five minutes he started giving updates every ten seconds. Laughing he started at ninety and just counted down until he reached zero.

Interspersed in his numbers were smiling faces that became angry and then ran the gambit of holidays. Karan also pointed out that he was at work and wasting company time and resources. This had no effect, so she threatened to call his boss.

The phone was on speaker when Trigg answered. “Looks like a little over six minutes until Rye’s lunch.”

Chance laughed loudly from his office as he continued his countdown. Telling him that he was no help, Karan hung up and called Ryder who also gave her an update. She could do nothing more than laugh as she hung up.

Slightly annoyed, and completely amused, she called Cookie who answered the phone, “About two minutes and forty-five seconds.”

“Oh my God. Taz has it right.” Karan laughed. “Telephone. Telegraph. Tell a Saint.”

“She would know that we can’t keep secrets from each other.” Cookie agreed. “Call me after your meeting.”

“Do you know more than me?” Karan demanded.

“Nope. Just that she had exciting news.” He laughed. “Your time is nearly up.”

“Believe me, I know.” She said leaning over and discreetly flipping off Chance who just laughed.

“I love you, babe.” Cookie said.

“I love you too, Cookie.” Karan laughed as fireworks started going off on her computer. Then numbers started appearing again, getting larger. “I’m going to kill him.”

“We don’t do concrete until next week.” Cookie said over the phone, trying to sound serious but unable to keep from laughing.

“I hate your husband.” Karan said as Rye stepped into the office.

“He has some redeeming qualities.” Rye said quietly, handing Karan an envelope. “I can’t think of any, right now.”

“Someone has jokes.” Cookie laughed.

“I heard,” Karan said with a smile, “that you found some of those redeeming qualities last night.”

Rye shuffled her feet as she looked at the floor to hide her blush.

Karan squealed in excitement. “You cashed in your V-card!”

“Remember that excitement when you open the envelope.” Chance suggested from the doorway. “Sup Cookie?”

“Just figuring how much concrete I need to bury you in.”

“You’re quitting?” Karan said and then got excited. “You got the teaching job!”

“I have fall semester with a teacher and spring by myself.” Rye said with the confidence that she was just starting to find. “Kindergarten. I may even have some of my own kids.”

“I’m so happy for you!” Karan said coming around the desk and hugging her. “I’m calling the girls. We’re celebrating tomorrow!”

“I’m going to take her to lunch.” Chance said. “Mom may try to get Michael after lunch.”

“Just take him with you.” Karan said going back around her desk and marking her calendar. “Take the afternoon, I’ll have Janice take your class.”

The three of them went to the Cookie Jar for lunch with his mom and sister. They were also excited for her. Plans were made to go check out the vintage clothing store. After lunch, Alana took Michael home with her and Chance took Rye home and introduced her to shower sex.
