A Mix Of Honesty and Lies

Once we arrived back at the house, we found Annie curled up in front of the fireplace in the living room. I leaned against the doorframe as I watched the small fire cast shadows over her face while she slowly turned the pages of the book she was reading. When her eyes drifted close with a dreamy smile gracing her lips, she let out a little happy sigh before opening them. She turned the page again, reading for a few seconds before giggling loudly. As she tossed her head back, her eyes met mine, immediately cutting her laughter off. She closed her book before getting to her feet.
“Gerry, you’re back!” She murmured as she crossed the room to stand in front of me with the book clutched tightly in her hand.
I nodded as I studied her face. “Yes. I got back a few minutes ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I shrugged. “I was enjoying watching you.”
“How was your run?” She asked cautiously.
I chuckled as I reached out to cup her face, knowing what she was really asking. Had I killed anyone? I pecked her lips before pulling her closer to me.
“It was good. We ran about 7 miles, taking a break about halfway at the stream, and then came straight home to you.”
She looked up at me. “Do you promise?”
“Yes, baby. There won’t be anyone telling you tomorrow that I killed anyone, I promise.”
She leaned against me, smiling. “Okay, good. How do you feel now? Better I hope.”
“I do,” I said, picking her up to carry her back to the rug in front of the fireplace. “If it’s okay, Annie, I think we should talk about the whole Katherine thing.”
She sighed heavily but nodded as she wrapped her arm around my neck. “Yes. I suppose so.”
Once I sat down with her in my lap, she nuzzled into my chest. I didn’t say anything for a few minutes while I held her, just wanting to enjoy having her close in case what I had to say upset her to the point of not wanting my touch.
“Annie, I don’t know what those other males told you, but I swear to you that I didn’t hurt Katherine.”
She sighed as she played with my sleeves. “Tell me everything, Gerry. From the beginning, please don’t leave anything out.”
“Alright, Annie.” I placed my chin on the top of her head as I stared into the fire. “I was seeing Katherine. We hadn’t been exclusive, but she was the main female I was involved with. I met her three years ago during my freshman year. We were wild. We spent so many nights together. Sometimes, it wasn’t just me and her. Sometimes, other women joined us. I broke up with her when you came to Grimm Forest, then I completely forgot her. That’s when she dyed her hair. When we saw her at Burger King, I told her that you were the girl that I had told her about—the one that I would give everything up for. She wasn’t happy,” I told her honestly.
“Why did you lie to me, Gerry?” She asked.
“I didn’t want you to worry about her. I never want you to worry about anyone else. All of those girls in my past didn’t mean anything to me. I have really only ever wanted you. You and I are what matter. Not them,” I answered.
Her fingers paused on my arm. “What happened that night? Did you go see her after you aura’ed us?”
I groaned, still unsure of what to say but even less willing to lose her over a lie that she might find out from someone else.
“I did go to see her after auraing you. I am so sorry, baby, and I promise you that I will never do it again. I only went over there to talk to her. I hated how upset you were, and I wanted to make sure that she understood that we would never be together in any way. I finally have you, and you are the one that I have wanted for all eternity. I told her that I wasn’t going to let anyone get between us. Not her. Not any of the other girls I was involved with. Nothing and no one.”
“What else happened? Did you touch her while you were over there?” She asked me softly.
“No, Annie. I only went over there to talk to her, I swear. She walked me to the door, where we hugged, and I kissed her cheek. Then I left. She was still very much alive when I left. If you don’t believe me, we can go down to the security office and we can have them show you the video footage. I never hurt her,” I lied, knowing that no one would be able to figure out that I had aura'd Katie to end her own life.
She tilted her head back to thoroughly study my face. “If you didn’t do it, then who did?”
“I don’t know, baby. Maybe she committed suicide. Maybe she couldn’t get over our conversation. She was so upset at first, and then when I told her you were my mate, she calmed down.”
Her eyes widened. “You told her that I was your mate?”
I nodded. “Because you are my mate, Annie. I love you. I would shout it from the rooftop if I was sure that it wouldn’t get back to our family. Osprey’s aura might not work on us anymore, but he won’t hesitate to yank your privilege of being away from the sleuth to make you return home, and if he did that, I would kill him.”
She blinked in surprise. “You would kill Osprey?”
I nodded. “If he tried to take you away from me, yes, I would. I meant what I said. I love you. I am not embarrassed to be with you. I have dreamt about it for so long that I’m not going to let anyone get between us.”
She leaned against me as she went back to playing with my sleeves. “I love you, Gerry. When we are done with school, I want to move somewhere secluded, where no one knows that we are siblings, so we can be open with our relationship.”
I smiled down at her. “Does that mean that you forgive me for lying about Katherine?”
She ran her fingers up my arm as she pressed her lips against mine. “Only if you promise never to lie to me ever again!”
“I won’t. I swear.”
“Okay, then, I forgive you.” She kissed me again before leaning back. “Now, about your request from earlier…”
