Finding The Spy
Logan
As soon as Giselda linked me to tell me that Gerald might have a spy in Havana, I pulled the entire sleuth to the sleuth house under the guise that I was searching for my perfect assistant now that I was Alpha. While I waited for Giselda to return home, I began to interview the sleuth members, starting with three of my warriors so they could watch the rest of the sleuth while I was in my office. Before each interview, I gave each person a spoonful of another potion that the vines had given me to force them to be honest with me. I was happy that the interviews only took approximately five minutes each, so I was almost finished. I was confident that I could sniff out lies, but with Annie on the line, I wasn’t going to risk being wrong, even though I wasn’t entirely sure where this obsession with her had come from. I hoped she was my mate, but only time would tell. It would be such a blessing if my chosen Alpha Sow was indeed also my fated mate.
“Take this,” I said to the man I didn’t recognize that Warrior Keith brought into my office.
The man eyed the little medicine cup I placed on the desk in front of him. “What is it?”
“A truth serum,” I answered.
“Why do I need to take it?”
“What do you have to hide that you don’t want to take it?” I retorted.
He frowned at me before looking back at the tiny cup. “I am entitled to my privacy.”
“Not when it pertains to sleuth business. You can either take it and answer my few questions or you can go to the dungeon until you choose to,” I told him smoothly, growing more suspicious of him by the second.
He narrowed his eyes on me, obviously weighing his choices before sighing and taking the serum. I lowered my eyes to the file in front of me.
“State your name.”
“Romeo Ramirez.”
“And your age?”
“23.”
“Sleuth of origin?”
“The Realm Sleuth.”
“How long have you been here?” I asked.
“2 months.”
“What made you make the switch to Havana?”
“My mate is here, and I wanted to be with her.”
“Is that the only reason you came here?”
He didn’t respond, and I raised my eyes to look at him before repeating my question. When he still remained silent, I stood up to walk around my desk. “Is?! That?! The?! Only?! Reason?! You? Came?! To?! Havana?!”
He grunted in pain. “At first, yes.”
“And now? Why are you here?” I continued to question him.
“To watch you. Beta Gerald told me to find him a way in case he needed to come protect his sister from you,” he admitted, wincing in pain as the serum punished him for not answering my question.
I stared at him in shock. “Why would his sister need to be protected from me?”
“He told me that you were obsessed with her and you kept bothering her, even after she told you to stop.”
“That’s not true,” I growled. “Why did you agree to be his spy?”
“Because he threatened to ban me from going home to visit my family. I thought that if I gave him what he wanted and you left her alone, there wouldn’t be any problems,” he said, lowering his head.
I grabbed him around the throat to make him look up at me. “I do not harass Annaria! She is to be our Alpha Sow, and that’s something that she agreed to be willingly.” I let him go to keep myself from killing him. I went back to my seat, tenting my fingers in front of me. “Are there any more spies?”
“Not that I know of.”
“Does your mate know that you have been sharing information with Gerald?”
“No, sir. She loves Havana.”
I placed a notebook down in front of him, ordering him to write down everything that he shared with Gerald about the Havana sleuth. When he finally pushed the notebook back to me a few minutes later, I picked it up to read it. I frowned at him as the level of his betrayal hit me. He had given Gerald a lot of information about the sleuth, from weaknesses in our borders and patrol schedules to the layout of our territory. When I was done reviewing what he wrote down, I leaned back in my chair, tapping my fingers on the desk.
“What do you think your punishment should be?” I asked.
“Death. It’s the only punishment worthy of my actions,” he answered without hesitation.
I narrowed my eyes on him as I thought about what he said. It would be so easy to end his life, but I wasn’t sure if I was willing to lose a member of my sleuth because her mate had misplaced loyalty. I tapped the notebook.
“I will give you one chance to prove that you can be loyal to Havana,” I told him.
“Why? I’m not sure how you can be so confident that I wouldn’t betray Havana after what I have done,” he replied.
“Are you going to betray Havana?”
“Not if I have a chance to continue loving my mate,” he answered.
“Even if you are banned from visiting Realm?”
“Yes, even then.”
“Alright. You will wait in the dungeons until I can figure this out. You will not have any outside contact until then. I will make sure your mate is aware that you will be unavailable for a while,” I said.
He nodded. “Thank you, Alpha Logan. But may I ask why you are giving me this chance?”
“It’s not for you. It’s for your mate. She is innocent, and Alpha Logan does not believe in punishing innocents. Killing you would kill her as well. And that is something that Logan won’t do without a very good reason,” Giselda said as she breezed into the room.
She handed me a vial, which I immediately opened to consume some of it before looking up at Giselda.
“Welcome home, cousin.”
She tilted her head as she studied my face. “Annie is your fated mate, Logan. You met her once and marked her. She chose you. I am so sorry it took so long to tell you.”
I frowned at her as I felt a shift in my mind before it exploded with many different memories. I swallowed hard as the memory of making love with Annie started playing through my head as if it were on repeat. Hope blossomed inside of me as I remembered the way she had practically begged me to mark her. I stood up, smiling at Giselda.
“It’s okay, cousin. How about you take him to the dungeons while I get ready to leave?” I asked.
“Where are you going?”
“I think it’s about time that we go get our Alpha Sow and my mate. Don’t you?”
