War With Her Uncle, The Alpha
I paced around the small room that my uncle had put me in an hour before the challenge took place. We were to be left alone so we could focus with the Alpha coming to speak to us about five minutes before the challenge started. I could hear him two rooms down speaking quietly to Alicia, who was crying. I clenched my jaw, worried about whether or not she would do what I told her. She hadn’t given me a clear yes or no before I left her room earlier that day. And that was what had me so anxious.
If she decided to full-on challenge me, I was afraid that our species would become extinct with her decision. I knew, if that was the case, I would destroy her without hesitation. I took a deep breath as I heard a door click shut a little ways down the hallway. Seconds later, my parents’ soft voices reached my ears. I rolled my eyes. They were my parents too, and all they could care about was Alicia. Whatever.
When I became beta, I was going to make them understand just how wrong they were for choosing Alicia. I loved my sister, but our parents were making the wrong choices over and over again. Their loyalty should be to the sleuth and not to a single member, even if that member was their daughter. When my doorknob started turning, I spun around to face it while my heart started pounding. When Alpha Terrence stepped into the room, Angel growled in my head. Just like me, she blamed a lot of our predicament on him. If he had just announced me as the future beta, I wouldn’t have had to challenge her.
“Alpha Terrence,” I greeted him, lowering my head.
“Cut the crap, Giselda! Forfeit the challenge! You already have your entire family upset. Let’s not even mention the fact that Marnie and I are upset about this whole thing! You are her sister, and yet, here you are trying to end her life for what? A title?” He roared.
My head snapped up so I could meet his eyes, my anger pouring from my body as Angel’s aura weakly came out. “Me? I did this? You could have avoided this entire situation just by naming me as the future beta! But you didn’t! You, along with my parents, are so caught up with the eldest daughter being beta that you all are overlooking who the better beta would be for our sleuth. OUR SLEUTH! That should take priority! Not family! OUR ALPHAS! THEN OUR SLEUTH! THEN OURSELVES! AND THEN OUR FAMILY! AS OUR *ALPHA* IF YOU CAN’T UNDERSTAND THAT, THEN YOU SHOULDN’T BE OUR ALPHA!”
He narrowed his eyes on me. “Are you through?” He hissed.
When I held his gaze without giving him the respect that he thought he deserved, his aura came out, dropping me to my knees as pain coursed through me. I whimpered under his control while Angel tried to fight his power, but being too weak to push him out. He crouched in front of me, gripped my chin, and yanked my head up violently to stare into my eyes as his aura strengthened.
“You will never be the Havana Sleuth Beta! I refuse to allow you to bring our sleuth to its knees!” He growled, making tears stream down my face as the urge to curl up in a ball almost overwhelmed me. “When you go out there, you will forfeit! You will fall to Alicia, and stop this stupidity! You do not deserve to be beta, and I will not allow you to be!”
He shoved me away by my chin, effortlessly getting back to his feet as I fell on my ass. He glowered down at me with a mix of disappointment and anger in his eyes. I kept my head down, still struggling to overcome his aura but unable to.
“Yes, Alpha Terrence,” I murmured with tears flowing down my face.
He gave me one more furious look before storming out of the room while I curled up in the fetal position, doing my best not to break. My eyes fluttered closed as all my hopes for the sleuth’s future died. As another wave of pain started to roll through me, the underside of my right breast grew warm before all of my uncle’s lingering aura was forced to flee from my body, leaving me in a puddle of flesh on the floor. The same spot that had heated started pulsing healing energy that filled me with strength and repaired the damage that Uncle Terrence’s aura had caused. Before I could fully recover, my mother opened the door, took one look at me in the fetal position on the floor, and rolled her eyes.
“It’s time, Giselda. Get up and let’s go!” She snapped.
“I-I’ll be right there!” I stammered.
She rolled her eyes again but left the room, slamming the door behind her. I shakily got to my feet to cross the room to the bathroom. I stood in front of the mirror, scanning my face while wondering what in the hell was going on with me. I took my shirt off before placing it on the counter to remove my bra. I studied my breasts for a moment, looking for any differences, before shaking my head. My breasts looked the same as they always had been. I brought my hand up to my breast, lifting it slightly so I could look at the spot that had helped me. When I saw nothing, I shifted my hand, gripping just the nipple to hold my breast up. I still couldn’t see anything, so I leaned closer to the mirror so I could study the underside of my breast.
It didn’t take me too long to zero in on several faded teeth imprints on my skin. I grabbed the edge of the sink as my body rocked backward. I swallowed hard as I tried to remember when I had been bitten. Finally, I took a deep breath as I realized the ‘when’ didn’t matter. Just the who. And there was only one ‘who’ that could have possibly bitten me there.
“Gerry,” I whispered, before my eyes fluttered closed.
My eyes snapped open, and I began to get dressed again. Once I was done, I walked out of the bathroom, my determination fully renewed. I was going to win the betaship, and once I got it, there was no going back. I was the rightful beta, and soon everyone would know it. The only thought that kept playing in my mind as I walked to the arena was: by marking me, not only had Gerry guaranteed my sleuth’s survival, but he also ensured his own downfall.
