Chapter Fourteen
Claire’s fall had opened up the hole, so it was no longer hidden from sight.
Lukas stared into the dim hole, immediately making out the outline of the nuisance he had gone through all this trouble for.
She must have fallen unconscious after falling into the pit which would explain why he could no longer sense her emotions. He stared at her for a few seconds, trying to make sense of the emotions coursing through him.
Relief? Worry? Concern? They were all emotions that a nuisance like her didn't deserve from him so he converted it all to anger.
Claire’s eyes opened slowly at this point, her head hurt tremendously and her vision was a bit blurry but the first thing she saw was a large creature staring down at her.
The creature's eyes were a deep familiar blue and as it locked gazes with her, she should have been horrified or scared for her life but instinctively she knew who it was.
Lukas froze when Claire roused, he hadn't wanted her to see him in his wolf form, he wasn't sure why. He expected her to scream her head off or something along those lines, what he didn't expect was for her to remain calm and just stare at him.
The reason he had been able to get a few wisps of Claire's emotions while on the search for her was because he had been subconsciously reaching out for her. Now he couldn't tell how she was feeling or what was going through her head as she stared at him.
Lukas shifted back, his clothes hanging off him in tatters. His pants were the only thing that still managed to hang on but it was also in tatters from the knee down.
He squatted and tilted his head to the side, noting that Claire didn't even flinch when he shifted back right in front of her.
"Dumb little human, what do you think you're doing?"
Claire remained silent, just staring up at the last person she wanted to see. She wasn't sure if she was relieved or horrified to see him.
She tried to move her lips, blinking slowly. "Ho… How did you find me?"
Lukas didn't answer her question, trying to figure out a way to bring her out. He didn't have a rope so he would have to improvise. He looked around for a long sturdy branch that he was sure wouldn't snap in half from Claire’s weight.
After finding the perfect branch, he lowered it into the hole and waited for Claire to figure out what to do.
Claire had already slowly risen to sit down while he was busy searching for a branch. She couldn't see what he was doing so she could only wait till he was done.
When the branch was held down into the hole, she grasped it and held on tight as she was pulled up by Lukas. When she was on level ground again, she let go of the branch and crumpled weakly to the ground.
Lukas tossed the bulky branch to the side casually like it was a small stick and walked up to Claire, lifting up her upper body so he could get a proper look at her.
Claire bit the inside of her cheek at the look of disapproval on Lukas' face, feeling the warmth of his hard body through the flimsy material of her torn dress as he squatted down to support her body against his.
Lukas used his free hand to lightly tug on Claire’s pearl and gold necklace which was mostly unharmed. "How did I find you?" He repeated with a cocked brow, fiddling with the accessory. "What do you think?"
Claire's eyes widened in disbelief and betrayal; although it was silly to, she cherished the little gift that Lukas had given her. She thought of mailing it to him when she had escaped from his clutches but it was a difficult choice to make as she longed to keep it, as a memoir of sorts.
The frustrated anger on her face made Lukas smile, a nasty expression. "Now tell me," He continued, his smile falling off his face. "What do you think you're doing?"
Claire pushed him away, wincing when she hit the ground. She scrambled away from him, struggling to get to her feet so that she could keep running from him.
Lukas didn't make a move to stop her, he got to his feet and watched her with a sinister satisfaction as she tried to limp away from him.
He had to give her props for trying but it was futile. "You shouldn't keep holding on to that little trinket, it'll just lead me right to you." He spoke softly, walking slowly after her.
Still limping away, Claire shakily fiddled with the clasp of the necklace, managing to get it off somehow, she threw it away and concentrated all of her efforts to getting away from Lukas.
Her soft green eyes were filled with determination, even though her entire body, including her heart hurt. She wasn't going to remain with the monster that called himself her Fated mate, she just wasn't.
"Dumb little human, you shouldn't be moving around so much when you're hurt." Lukas said casually, like they were having a polite conversation when he was literally hunting her down.
He stepped on the discarded necklace as he went past it, not sparing it a second glance. Claire hadn't looked too hurt, she just had a nasty gash on her leg and a lot of bruises. What made Lukas slightly worried was her head injury, it looked like she had taken a blow to the head, she really shouldn't be moving around too much…
His thoughts were cut off when Claire immediately started going down, he barely caught her in time, shaking his head when he found out that she was unconscious.
*'So dumb…'*
Lukas picked up her limp body with ease, holding her bridal style. He would have tossed her over his shoulder to carry her back but he didn’t want to worsen her injuries. How was he to keep making her miserable if she ended up dead?
Lukas quickly made the journey back to the resort, he had no interest in killing off Claire, that would be putting her out of the misery that her existence brought him.
It was unheard of that a werewolf would have more than one Fated mate, it was difficult enough already finding the one. So Claire turning out to be his Fated mate, had ruined all of his chances at finding true love, he wasn’t about to let her off easy.
