Chapter Thirty-three
There was a knock on the sitting room door a few minutes later and before they could respond, the door swung open.
A woman dressed in a suit skirt that was far too short to be office wear and a dark blue frilly top stood at the door, her soft blond hair left down her shoulders, little braids in them.
"I'm Liv, Alec sent me." She introduced briefly, verging on rude.
Claire and Rachel shared a look but walked towards her anyway.
"Sorry for the trouble, I'm Clai…"
"I know who you are." Liv curtly interrupted her, making no effort to hide the disdain in her dark eyes.
Claire shared another look with Rachel, a tense silence filling the space between them. "Um… sure? This is Rachel, a frien…"
"Let's get started, shall we?" Liv interrupted Claire again, a forced smile on her face.
Rachel blinked in disbelief at this, she was about to give the secretary an earful but Claire was quick to stop her.
This was more along the lines of how Claire had been expecting the werewolves here to treat her, it truly didn't bother her.
Rachel swallowed down her words for her friend's sake but the look on her face made it clear that she wouldn't be tolerating anymore bold-face insults from Liv.
Liv started the tour from the first floor, she acted smug as she showed them the rooms on the first floor like she owned it.
Rachel gave her the evil eye the entire time, waiting for just one misstep from Liv so that she could jump her.
On the second floor, the same atmosphere remained. "... and there's Lukas' master bedroom, right ther…"
"On first name basis with the Alpha King now?" Rachel interrupted her, giving her a taste of her own medicine.
Liv looked vindictive. "And what would a commoner like you know about th…"
Claire frowned, she was fine with being insulted but she didn't appreciate her fiancé's secretary talking down on her friend.
"That's my room, if you ever need me I'll be in there." She sweetly cut Liv off, smiling at Rachel.
Rachel beamed at this, looking Liv straight in the eye. "Thank you, Claire."
Liv's face changed to an ugly purple but she kept quiet after that.
After a few more rooms, Rachel leaned closer to Claire. "I need to use a restroom."
Liv overheard and immediately put on her best hostess attitude. "Of course, there's a rest room in the receiving room that we just passed." She offered.
Rachel eyed her up as she walked away. "I'll be right back, Claire."
Rachel was barely out of sight when Liv lashed out at Claire grabbing her hair harshly and pulling on it. "I don't know what kind of trick you pulled but you can never be Alpha King Lukas' mate so take out your claws from his back and…"
"Am I interrupting something?" Lukas' voice came from the direction they had been heading in, causing Liv to immediately let go of Claire like she had been burnt.
"Lu-Luka… I-I mean, A-Alpha Lukas…" Liv stuttered, terror in her eyes.
Claire held onto her burning scalp, tears gathering in her eyes. Maybe she should have let Rachel smack some sense into the secretary earlier because she was certain that large chunks of her hair had been pulled out.
She looked up proudly at Lukas, saying nothing even though the look on his face demanded an explanation. She wasn't going to ask him for help.
Lukas just stared at her back, his expression blank as he did, then he walked off just as calmly as he had interrupted them.
Liv had gone pale earlier but now the color was rapidly returning to her face. "Ha! He doesn't even care about you." She snarked, her dark eyes spitting fire.
Just as she reached out to attack Claire again, Rachel showed up and without asking questions, she dragged Liv off her friend, ready to claw out her eyes if necessary.
Fortunately, Alec showed up at this point, a grave look on his face. "Get up." He said icily to Liv who had been thrown on the ground by Rachel.
Liv's eyes went wide with fear, she had never heard Alec sound like that. He was always calm and soft spoken.
Rachel was already by Claire’s side, checking up on her friend to see if she had been hurt.
Liv scrambled to her feet, realization in her eyes at how far she had taken things. "Mr. Alec, I-I can explain…"
Alec's expression didn't soften, he just brought out his phone. "I need men on the third hallway on the second floor."
Panic slowly bled into Liv's eyes at Alec's words, it couldn't possibly be for her, right?
"These aren't my orders so don't even bother trying to convince me." Alec handed to her, patiently waiting for the bodyguards he requested for. "They're Alpha King Lukas' orders."
"Th-That's not possible." Liv whispered fearfully.
She and the other secretaries except for the air-brained Lola all knew that Lukas actually despised his human mate. She had seen it for herself earlier when he didn't even seem to care that she had been hurting her.
"Liv," Alec said softly but it was even scarier than when his voice was cold. "Do you know the punishment for putting your hands on the mate of the Alpha King?"
Liv gulped, visibly trembling. "D-De-Dea…" She stuttered painfully, unable to get the words out.
"That's right, death but fortunately we're in more modern times so you'll be losing your job and be spending some time behind bars. Merciful, isn't it?" He asked with a gleam in his dark eyes.
The men that Alec had requested for showed at that moment and Alec ordered that she be taken away, blatantly ignoring her pleas.
"I'm sorry that you had to see that, Miss Claire…"
"Please just call me Claire and I'm sorry for troubling you." Claire stepped forward after the ruckus had settled down.
"I should be the one apologizing for the trouble, Miss Claire, I sent her to you after all." Alec said contritely.
Claire didn't have the mind to correct him again. "It's alright, Alec, no one was hurt and I'm just relieved that it's all over now."
Rachel had been about to interrupt her to point out that someone had definitely been hurt but Claire squeezed her hand to stop her.
"Very well, I'll be handling your tour from here on. Miss Claire, Miss Rachel, if you would please follow me…"
