Chapter Fifty-one
Claire let her arms drop to her side, “Well, this is new, you actually need me for something?”
Lukas had the decency to wince but he didn’t back down. “I need you to help me get rid of Alina.”
Cynical laughter bubbled past Claire’s lips, “I’m not cleaning up after you.”
A vein ticked on Lukas’ jaw, it was clear that he was only coming to Claire because she was the only one that had even a slight chance of getting Alina to leave.
She knew that she would have no choice in the end but to do it, that didn’t mean that she had to make it easy for him.
“That’s why it’s a favor, I’ll pay in kind.” He said patiently.
This sparked Claire’s curiosity, “What kind of payment do I get?”
“I’ll owe you a favor, you can make whatever request you want.” Lukas said in a measured manner.
“Anything at all? So I can ask you to let me g-”
“No.” Lukas immediately cut her off, his dark blue eyes flashing. “I’m not letting you go, try again.”
Claire rolled her eyes, she truly thought that Lukas had started to get bored of her, she should have known better. “Fine, could Rosie stay in a guest room on the first floor?”
Lukas visibly calmed down at this, his cooling midnight blue eyes trailing over her. “Sure.”
“The we have a deal.” She accepted, already turning around to leave. Sharing such a cramped space with Lukas made her jumpy, it was easy to deny otherwise but when there was mere inches between them like this, she couldn’t escape the undeniable chemistry sizzling between them.
Lukas let her go, his fists clenched by his side like he could barely stop himself from reaching out to touch Claire. His eyes kept trailing to the mating mark standing proudly at the juncture of her neck.
That had been a mistake, just like the entirety of that night. It was why he had immediately put some distance in between them because he was certain that he would make the mistake again in a heartbeat.
The lines that he had drew between them had blurred and soon they would be all gone. *What happened to making the human that took the place of the love of his life miserable?*
He couldn’t do that anymore, too busy fighting his own demons. Forcing her to have dinner with him hadn’t happened because he wanted to make her miserable. He had done that because he was slowly going insane being apart from Claire.
*‘Wasn’t this fucking wonderful?’*
If he hadn’t held back a few moments ago, just before Claire left, he would have slammed her against the door and claimed her lips, and maybe sink his fangs into his mating mark on her neck because he hated that it was starting to fade, he needed everyone to know who she belonged to…
Lukas cursed and pushed his hair back from his face, he was starting to lose it. Claire would have kicked him in the buts if he did that for sure.
*‘Was this really just the Fated mate bond?’* He doubted it, it was Claire herself that was driving him to the brink of insanity.
He had to stay in the empty room to catch his breath for a few minutes, when he finally stepped out, he found Claire peacefully eating in the dining room with the new assistant Alec had hired for her, Alina was nowhere to be found.
Lukas had to pause and take a proper look around, maybe he just didn’t notice her. It was highly unlikely she would leave the dining room, he had even been expecting her to be waiting in front of the empty room for him.
“Where’s Alina?” He finally asked, still frozen at the doorway.
“Gone? Wasn't that what you wanted?” Claire sassed.
Although Claire spelled it out of him, Lukas still had a hard time believing it. In the years since Alpha Kings were implemented, he had never once been able to get rid of Alina until she was well and ready to leave.
*How had Claire managed to accomplish that feat in less than half an hour?*
“She is?” He repeated, walking over. “How did you do it?”
Rosie looked from her Alpha King to her Luna Queen, her face flushed in awe as she quietly watched them interact right in front of her.
Claire shrugged, “I just called Alpha King Anton Costin, it was easy to get him to call off his daughter.” She humored him and explained her tactics, getting to her feet when he got to the table.
Rosie shot to her feet as well, not quite sure where she should look, so she settled for the ground in front of her feet.
Claire left Lukas at the table, heading to her office with Rosie in tow. She could still picture the awe of his face when he realized that she had actually gotten rid of Alina.
It hadn’t take her very long to come up with a perfect solution. Alina clearly didn’t hide her interest in Lukas, all she had to do was leverage on that as Lukas’ fiancee and viola, pest controlled.
She doubted that this would be the last they would be seeing of Alina but her agreement with Lukas was to get rid of her right then, not permanently.
That reminded her, “Rosie? What do you say about moving into the mansion?” She asked the redhead when they got back to her office. “That way you don’t have to worry about transportation.”
Rosie’s hazel brown eyes sparkled at this, “Really? I can?” She clasped her hands together, overwhelmed.
Claire smiled softly, it was worth doing Lukas’ dirty work for him to see Rosie practically skip over to her cubicle.
She got behind her own desk and pulled up her laptop as well, she had a lot to do if she wanted to be ready in time for her lunch with Lukas. She still had a lot of schoolwork to tackle so it was best she got started right away.
Claire had the option to ditch college entirely, no one would even fault her for doing that. She didn’t want to though, Lukas had already crashed the car of her life, she was going to take this one little win no matter what.
