Chapter Seventeen
Claire knew that everything that Lukas did was a calculated step to cause her misery but she couldn’t help but be shocked at just how far he took things.
This time, he wore her a silver choker with inlaid diamonds, caressing her skin as he did. “Don’t worry, this one is clean.” He dismissed her worries with a warm smile, offering her his hand.
Shivers ran down Claire’s back, the last thing she would ever do was trust Lukas. What made her even more apprehensive was how nice he was being, that always happened before he did the absolute worst to her.
But she was literally being kept as a hostage and didn’t have much of a choice so she gingerly placed her hand in his, the chilly silver choker feeling like a noose.
Lukas led her out of the hotel and the cold stares Claire got from hotel guests made her want the floor to open up for her to fall through. She tried to pull her hand from Lukas’ hold because that looked to be the main point of their hostility but Lukas’ held her tightly, short of straight up begging him to let her go, there was nothing else she could do.
Lukas himself seemed not to see how every female werewolf present had their eyes out for Claire’s neck, or maybe he did and just didn’t care.
There was a car waiting outside the hotel for them and Lukas held open the car door for her before going around to get in on the other side. The car drove deeper into the resort, heading for a restaurant.
The restaurant turned out to be a fancy affair, it had special glass rooms in a part of the forest that was artificially lit to give the aesthetic of being out in nature while eating your meal and it was to one of these that a stiffly dressed waiter brought them to, bowing as he ushered them through the glass door.
For someone who had lived only comfortably her entire life, this kind of splendor was a first for Claire, it almost made her forget the situation she was in, the glass cubicles they were in were very beautiful.
Hidden silver lights had been strung up among the trees and shrubs around to mimic moonlight and it made the place look ethereal.
After staring wide-eyed at the beautiful sights around her, Claire looked at Lukas and found his staring intently at her, an inscrutable expression on his face.
Maybe it was the intimate environment they were in but having Lukas stare at her that intently was unnerving, it made her look away, a slight blush staining her cheeks.
Lukas took her hand, startling her as he did. “Do you like it?”
His words made Claire gather her wits about her, Lukas didn’t have her best interests at heart. She snatched her hands away. “No, I’d prefer it better if the glass wasn’t here and you were gone.”
Lukas’ lips lifted in a small side smile before he let out a chuckle. “Eager to get lost in the woods again?”
“I wouldn’t hesitate to if it meant I could get away from you.” She snapped back, her leaf green eyes flashing.
Lukas placed his hand over his chest. “You’d choose to be mortally wounded over me? That’s a cruel thing to say to your fiance.”
Claire just scoffed, refusing to humor him with a reply. The waiter returned to take their orders and when their food came, they both ate in a tense silence.
“We’re leaving for the city in the morning.” Lukas said casually, taking a sip of wine.
Claire straight up choked on food, staring up at Lukas in disbelief. “You don’t mean that.”
Lukas reached out with a napkin to dab at the side of her lips. “I never say what I don’t mean.” He countered calmly. “As soon as we get to the city, preparations will begin for our engagement ball.”
Claire leaned back from the sheer shock of his words, blinking in disbelief. With how much the new set of werewolves that moved into Lukas’ territory hated humans, Claire hadn’t really believed Lukas claims of marriage.
It was simply unheard of, she would never be accepted and she didn’t want to be.
*‘Was this all a ploy to make her suffer? Because he would be achieving that by doing this to her.’*
“The very last thing I want to do is get married to you.” Claire spoke in a shaky voice.
Lukas gave her a sinister smile. “Good thing I’m not asking.”
Claire choked back her retort because she would end up sobbing again and feeling pathetic. She forced down her glass of wine, needing something to distract herself.
“How long are you going to keep me around?” She asked coldly.
“Until I’m satisfied.” He smiled charmingly, lifting his wine glass in a mock salute to her.
“Will you let my parents go then?” Claire insisted, at the edge of her seat.
“Let your parents go? But they aren’t hostages, and neither are you, you’re free to leave anytime.” He replied flippantly.
Claire narrowed her eyes, she could believe him saying that her parents weren’t hostages because he had only shown interest in making just her miserable.
It was Alpha King Lukas here, Claire would absolutely believe that the only reason he threatened her parents was to alienate her from them. If she tried to leave, her parents would probably be okay, the only person who would suffer the consequences would be her.
“You say that right after putting another tracker on me.” She muttered bitterly.
“That’s for your own safety, how else would I have found you when you fell down the pit?”
“So you agree that there’s a tracker in this one as well?” Claire raised a brow.
“I don’t need a tracker to find you because I don’t intend to let you out of my sight.” He responded calmly. “And even if you somehow manage to escape, I’ll hunt you down little human, you’re mine.”
Claire felt shivers run down her spine at Lukas’ words, she was starting to think that he would never get satisfied with causing her pain. What an impossible situation this was.
