Chapter Sixty-two

Lukas paced in front of the door for a few minutes, feeling the urge to open the door and speak to Claire.
But just what would he say? There was nothing to be said really, Claire wouldn't listen to him, he had worked hard to make sure that she wouldn't.
Once again, he wanted to apologize but he couldn't... Doing that would indirectly mean that he was letting her go or else the apology would mean nothing, and that was one line he was unwilling to cross.
*'Mine.'*
He was never letting her go.
At first, it was to make her miserable but now it was because his whole world would literally crumble if he did, he couldn't let that happen.
"A-Alpha Lukas?" A strangely familiar voice called his name.
Lukas turned around to see the young red-headed personal assistant that Alec had hired for Claire, it would seem that the both of them got along very well.
"I-I'll um... I'll leave s-sir." She stumbled over her words thinking that Lukas wanted to go in.
*Ha! That was laughable.* Lukas had been pacing in front of the door for a while now and he still hadn't worked up the courage to do so much as knock on it.
"You don't have to." He said in a quiet voice, "I was just about to leave."
"Oh." Rosie looked down, nervously, twiddling her fingers at the need to do something with her hands.
She had hurried here after getting a text from Luna Claire saying that she wanted to take a nap. Rosie had been waiting in her cubicle for her return, too nervous to be able to get any work done, so she had known that something had to be wrong from the moment that Claire had sent that text.
She hadn’t expected to run into Alpha Lukas right at the door to the bedroom.
“Could I speak to you for a moment?” Lukas forced out, stepping away from the door and gesturing for the assistant to do the same.

Inside the bedroom, Claire was oblivious to what was going on just right outside the bedroom, busy on the phone.
“I just wanted to say ‘hi’ Mom, I’m fine really, I promise.” Claire tried to convince her mom.
For some reason, Julia was convinced that she was sick, which was ridiculous because Claire was just fine.
“Are you getting enough air? I know it’s so easy for you to forget to leave the comfort of the mansion.” Julia’s worried voice filtered in through the phone.
Claire huffed out laughter, contrary to what her mother thought, she was the one who kept insisting to go out although she was encouraged to get some more rest.
“I’ll be fine Mom, you really don’t need to worry about me.”
“Alright, fine,” Julia quickly gave in, “Don’t forget to get enough food and rest, okay, I don’t want you falling ill, Sunshine…”
Claire settled in for a long session of her mom fussing over her, knowing that she couldn’t stop her tirade until she was satisfied.
Finally, after a few minutes, she could get some words in. “Send my greetings to, Dad.”
“Alright, I’ll let him know. Be safe, Sunshine, and send my love to Lukas.”
After the call ended, Claire just blankly stared at the beeping screen of her phone, suddenly feeling the urge to cry.
Recently, her feelings had been all over the place, she wondered if she should have taken Senite’s advice and gotten some rest after all.
Maybe that was what she would do; her mom was never wrong after all. After a few days of sleeping in and just taking it easy, she should feel brand new and she would be able to get right back to work.

Rosie quietly obeyed Lukas, wondering what he wanted to speak to her about.
“Tell me about Claire,” He said shortly.
Rosie was stunned speechless, of all the ways that she expected the conversation to go, she didn’t expect it to take this turn.
“A-About Luna Claire?” She stuttered slightly, intimidated by the presence of the Alpha King. “What would you like to know, s-sir?”
Lukas looked thoughtful, “Do you think she has anything on her mind, does she seem sad or upset?”
Rosie frowned slightly at this odd line of questioning, *‘Wasn’t these questions that Alpha Lukas could ask his mate himself, or was this a test of sorts?’*
“Luna Claire smiles a lot and she always has something nice to say to me but I can’t help but think she does look sad,” Rosie said carefully, she needed to keep her job, not just for the pay and the perks but because she loved working for Luna Claire.
She couldn’t fail this test, she had to show how observant she was to the Luna Queen’s mate. “She likes to keep busy but perhaps she does that because she has a lot weighing on her mind.”
Rosie fell quiet, not wanting to come off like a big talker who couldn’t keep a secret.
While poor Rosie was busy overthinking Lukas’ harmless questions, Lukas himself was thinking about what she had said.
“Thank you, don’t speak of this to Claire.” Lukas asserted to Rosie before walking off.
Rosie just watched him leave quietly, wondering what had just happened. Now that Alpha Lukas was gone, however, she could focus on her original reason for coming. She needed to check up on Luna Claire!
She knocked gingerly on the door, awaiting a response. Instead of a response, there was nothing but silence and just as she was about to lift her hand to try knocking again, the door swung open to reveal the very person she had come looking for.
“Oh, Luna Claire-” Rosie blurted out, startled by her sudden appearance.
“I knew you’d come.” Claire smiled softly but there was no missing the weariness in her eyes. “I’m fine, just a little tired.” She immediately answered the questions in Rosie’s expressive hazel eyes.
Rosie studied the Luna Queen with concern, maybe it was just a trick of the light but she looked a little pale and she leaned a little heavily on the door jamb like she needed its support to stay upright.
