Chapter Forty-nine

Claire was so caught up in the event that she forgot that she was supposed to have dinner with Lukas until Rosie dropped her off in her bedroom. She sighed, some of her excitement fading away. She had planned to get into comfortable clothes and eat her dinner on the bed while watching TV shows.
She decided to go for dinner as she was, there was no reason to change out of her dress, only to have to wrack her head about what to wear for dinner. She stepped out of her bedroom again to find Rosie about to leave.
“Do you need anything else, Luna Claire?” Rosie asked earnestly, her auburn ponytail was less bouncy, a visual evidence of how hectic her day had been.
Claire was all too happy to let her personal assistant get some much-needed rest. She wasn’t pleased that Rosie would have to drive down to her apartment while it was getting late, maybe she could ask Lukas to give her a room in the mansion to make her job easier.
“Not at all,” She quickly responded. “I’m just heading to the dining room, you should get going so you aren’t out on the road too late.”
Rosie glowed when Claire expressed her concerns, “You don’t have to worry about me, I’m used to working late. I’ll escort you to the dining room since it's on my way out.”
Claire couldn’t turn her down, it was also nice to have pleasant company before she would have to face off against Lukas. “Thank you, Rosie.”
They walked in companionable silence till they got to the door of the dining room, Rosie stepping forward to open up the door for Claire.
They both shared a look at the sight they were greeted with, Rosie bowing to Lukas before hurrying off. Claire walked in calmly, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor.
“I had no idea we would be having company.” She said casually, flicking her eyes over the lady that was draped over Lukas before settling on her fiance.
“We weren’t supposed to be having company.” Lukas said with self-control, keeping his eyes fixed on Claire who sat across from him.
Claire could tell that Lukas wasn’t interested in the gaudy-looking lady that was hanging off his arm but she wasn’t going to humor him and show curiosity about what kind of relationship they had.
The skank rose to her full height when Claire sat down, her dark eyes glittering with sinister intentions. “So this is the human you settled for, Lukas? How disappointing.” She scoffed.
Claire paused her motions of picking up her golden cutlery, humor dancing in her eyes. She refused to take the bait though, settling in to eat. She genuinely didn’t care what Lukas did, he didn’t love her after all so he wasn’t obligated to be faithful to her.
The skank didn’t take well to being ignored by Claire, “You don’t know how devastated I was when I came back from my vacation in Maldives only to find out that my dear Lukas, had gotten engaged to some human…” She sneered the word, keeping a vise-like grip around Lukas’ neck.
Claire had to fight back the urge to laugh, it wasn’t because of the ranting skank but because of how miserable Lukas looked. She graced the unwanted visitor with more silence, wondering why Lukas was tolerating her presence if he looked so wretched because of it.
The skank shot to her feet at Claire’s continued silence, stomping around the table to Claire, her eyes narrowed like something had caught her attention.
“Y-You marked her, Lukas?” She stumbled over her words for the first time, her eyes wide in disbelief.
This caught Claire’s attention, she looked up with curiosity in her leaf-green eyes, wondering what the skank was going on about now.
Lukas didn’t grace her with a response either, finally able to get to his food now that she was no longer hanging off him like a koala.
The skank seemed to be used to getting ignored by Lukas so she turned her attention to Claire again. “And how rude can you be? Do you know who I am?” She demanded in Claire’s face, going right on without waiting for a response. “ I am Alina Costin, the only daughter of the Alpha King of Europe.” She announced grandly.
Claire knew that the Alpha King of Europe was the most powerful werewolf royalty so it would explain why Lukas was being so indulgent. That was none of her business though, she wasn't required to be nice. Alina was right, she was just some human that Lukas had snatched up and put a ring on.
There was still the matter of her being marked that troubled her thoughts. She had no idea what the skank was talking about and Lukas hadn’t given a reaction so she didn’t know what to think.
“I think the rude one here is you,” She countered calmly. “It’s dinnertime and it shows a lack of manners to talk so much at the table.”
Alina opened and closed her garishly painted lips a few times like a fish drowning in air, she looked to Lukas in disbelief like she expected him to do something.
Lukas kept an expressionless mask fixed on his face, “Make nice Lina and join us to eat.” He said tonelessly.
Alina threw her nose up at Claire, a smug expression on her face as she returned to holding onto Lukas’ arm, picking at the food on her plate with her free hand.
Claire shot Lukas a look and she didn’t want to sound delusional but he looked to be apologizing with his eyes. Lukas was clearly fine with another woman holding him while his fiancee sat across from him, Claire tried not to look too deeply at how that made her feel.
She could also get up and just leave but where was the fun in that? Lukas hadn’t given her a choice when he invited her to have dinner with him so she wasn’t going to leave no matter how awkward the atmosphere got.
