Chapter Eighty-seven
Claire’s heart beat painfully in her chest as she heard the car's engine stop running, she had a trembling but firm grip on the dagger Lukas had given her.
She didn't think she could ever bring herself to use it but she couldn't bear the thought of anything happening to Lukas. He was already badly injured and it was for her sake.
Just as Claire feared, someone came inside through an opening beside the crashed car. It was none other than Roman, the Alpha King wore a black trench coat over his turtle neck and slacks, his signature cigar in hand.
Roman whistled as he walked in, getting an eyeful of the wrecked car. "The fucking psychopath." He muttered under his breath, walking up to Claire only to slow down when he got close enough to get a good look at her.
Claire stood protectively in front of Lukas tightly holding onto the dagger. She was sure that she presented quite the sight.
Her hairdo had come undone sometime during her struggle with Clay, her tiara nowhere to be found. Her blonde curls draped around her like a halo, a stark contrast from the rest of her.
Her hands and the front of her dress was stained with Lukas' blood and the only reason she was able to stand on her two feet was by sheer willpower alone.
Roman wisely kept his distance, puffing on his cigar with an indulgent look on his face. "What do you intend to do with that?" He asked patiently.
Claire had a determined expression on her face, she stilled her trembling hands and stood up to Roman. "I'm not going to let you touch Lukas."
Roman flicked his eyes from the Alpha King on the ground to the delicate human trembling like a leaf right in front of him. "And If I do? Think you can stop me?" He cocked a brow, taking a step forward.
Claire felt sick from Roman's words, she knew true fear then because she wasn't sure she could do anything against Roman if he wanted to hurt Lukas.
She couldn't bring herself to say anything, she'd shield Lukas with her body if it came to that because she couldn't even consider going on living without him.
Roman seemed to be able to read her thoughts on her face because he tutted, "You're wasted on Lukas," He said offering his hand. "Come with me, I can take care of you."
Claire blinked in shock, looking from Roman's hand to his completely serious expression, wondering if she could use this to her advantage. "If... If I come with you, will you... could you please not hurt him?"
Roman seemed pleased by this offer much to her surprise. Claire would never know but Roman hadn't intended to kill Lukas, he knew that the bastard was pretty much immortal. He had just done this for the fun of it and because he couldn't stand it that Lukas found happiness but he didn't.
So this was right on track with his plans. He stood in the wrecked shed amidst the fallen bodies of his previous partners, his hand still held out.
"Of course," He agreed easily, "You'll come to find out that I always keep to my words." He said smoothly.
Claire hesitated, looking reluctantly to Lukas. She didn't trust Roman at all but she didn't exactly have a lot of options. If he wanted to, he could still kill Lukas and take her away.
As she pretended to consider his offer, she wondered if she could stall long enough for Alec to show up...
Once again, Roman seemed to predict what she was thinking, it was a little scary. "I'm going to count to ten, Claire." He said with amusement in his voice at her hesitation. "If you don't take my hand in that time, I'll presume that you're turning down my offer."
Claire felt like a dear caught in the headlights of a truck, at this rate she would end up being taken away by Roman.
"One, two, three..." He started counting slowly, looking to have all the time on the world.
By the time he got to seven, Claire forced herself to take a step forward. Roman terrified her but her need to protect Lukas was stronger.
Her second step was halted though, making her whip around in shock to find Lukas' hand possesively gripping the tail ends of her dress.
"Lukas?!" Claire called out in shock, feeling her eyes burn with tears when he slowly sat up, his face still that scary pale shade. She gasped sharply when he pulled her down into his arms, holding her possesively, she had not been expecting that.
"Fuck off, Roman." He half growled to the other Alpha, his eyes like two daggers.
Roman tutted, looking genuinely disappointed by this outcome. It couldn't have hurt Lukas to be unconscious for a few seconds more. He didn't wait to engage in small talk after that though, turning around and striding off.
Claire forgot all about Roman when Lukas looked at her, the dagger in her hands clattering to the wooden floor as she tried to cling to him without applying pressure to his injured shoulder.
Lukas had propped himself up on a nearby sofa, holding Claire tight with his good hand. Not long after Roman's car drove off though, his hand went slack and Claire looked up from where she had buried her head in his chest to find out that he had passed out again.
She lifted a shaky hand to brush his hair out of his face with a teary smile, she couldn't believe that he had literally done that just to save her again a second time. She should probably get off him but she couldn't bring herself to do it so she clung to him until the sound of several cars pulling up brought her out of her trance.
Alec was one of the first to come running in, not slowing down even once even after taking in the literal chaos that had happened in the shed. The shed quickly filled up after that, Claire too far gone to notice that Killian was also present.
Alec had panicked at first when he first got to them, there was so much blood, he feared that they were both gravely injured.
Claire quickly explained the situation though, refusing to leave Lukas even when he was attended to by Lukas' personal doctor.
