Chapter Eighty-one
Alec was alerted when Lukas returned, it had already been a few hours since he left on his run. Killian was still here much to his chagrin, he had hoped that the Emissary would have tired out and left by now.
The person that had actually gotten tired was Rosie, she refused to rest in her room though, preferring instead to remain in Lukas' office to be a part of the search for Claire.
After spending so much time in tense silence, Rosie eventually dozed off. Alec had gotten up to put her in a comfortable position and cover her properly with the blanket before returning to his seat.
He rose to his feet when he heard that Lukas had approached the main gate, intending to personally receive him. He had no plans to leave the Emissary to his whims while he was gone so the human had to come with him.
Killian said nothing about this which came as a surprise to Alec who had been expecting the mouthy human to already let loose a couple compound sentences.
He also noticed that Killian had gotten quieter and more agreeable as the night went on. Alec couldn't tell if it was because the human was worried for Claire of if Lukas had given him a scare. Either way, it bought his silence so Alec was pleased.
They made their way across the foyer just as the gates opened to let Lukas in. The bodyguards wisely parted to let him in, it was best to keep a distance from Lukas at the moment.
The Alpha King prowled in, his shirt was gone and his pants were ripped to shreds, his feet bare. The moon seemed to peek out from behind a cloud at this point, splashing him in cold silver rays. It was enough to make anyone awed, even a human like Killian was swept away.
The moonlight highlighted the magnificence of his build, glistening muscles shifting as he briskly strode forward.
Alec immediately stepped up to him, the only person who could dare do it. "Logan still has no leads." He started to fill Lukas in on the recent developments without even being prompted.
They both walked side by side into the mansion, already crossing the foyer before Killian realized that he had to follow them.
"It's been over two hours so he said he was calling his men off." Alec tagged on as they went up the stairs. "There's two possibilities, it's either Logan has connections with the Rogues or the Rogues themselves have gotten more connections." This second part was mentioned softly to keep his words out of the ears of the nosy Emissary.
Lukas was clearly listening intently to everything Alec had to say but his expression remained unchanged and he didn't say a word.
Alec rattled off updates about the conditions of the bodyguards that had been attacked. He also informed the Alpha King on the reports that they had gotten from the surviving bodyguards.
Clearly the attackers hadn't been aiming to kill because all of their gunshot wounds had been in non-lethal places. He didn't mention this to Lukas however, he didn't want the Alpha King to go gentle on them.
Alex still hadn't forgiven the Rogues for their attempt on Lukas' life, and now that they had moved on to dragging Luna Claire into the matter when she had nothing to do with it, he was ready for them to be completely cleared out.
Alex only kept quiet when Lukas stopped by the guest room he was currently staying in to change into something more acceptable. He went ahead to Lukas' office, he had already sent off the human in the company of a maid there and he didn't want to leave Killian all alone in Lukas' office for too long.
When he returned, he found Killian over at the sofa where Rosie was currently lying on.
Alec greeted this with a dark scowl, immediately strutting over. "Need something?" He cocked a brow at Killian, putting himself in between the human and Rosie.
Killian quickly backed off with his hands up, "I was merely answering her questions." He said, already walking off.
Alec made a tutting sound and bent over to get a proper look at Rosie who stared up at him with impressionable hazel eyes. "Are you alright?" He asked for what must be the umpteenth time.
Rosie nodded, clutching the blankets closer. She had been a little confused and worried when she woke up and found the office empty, wondering where they all went. So immediately Killian returned in the company of maid, she asked him questions.
It was when they were in the middle of that that Alec walked in.
Now that Alec had returned, Claire no longer felt unease. It didn't make sense but his presence eased her, it even made her sleepy again so she rolled over and dozed off under his watchful eyes.
After making sure that Rosie was comfortable and unharmed, Alec returned to Lukas' table to wait for his Alpha King to return.
Lukas took his time showing up, it was clear that he had taken a shower when he returned, the edges of his black hair was damp, curling around his face in a way that would make a magazine model jealous.
He strode into the crowded office like he owned the place, which he did, and silently sat behind his desk. He was dressed in all black as usual, a black dress shirt and slacks.
There was really nothing to be said, and also there was nothing to be done. They were promised that more information would show up in six hours so they could only buckle down and wait.
Two hours had already gone by so there was still about four hours of waiting time left. There was nothing for company but thick silence, the night getting darker and colder through the windows.
It looked to be a rough night, like the weather itself could tell that there was something amiss. The sky was cloudy, covering up the minimal moonlight that was present and hiding away the dark blue sky. The state of the sky outside matched the glowing orbs in Lukas's eyes as he slowly swung from side to side on his chair.
