Chapter Sixty-nine

Lukas pulled out his weapon when they hid behind a wall, noting that the sniper stopped shooting when they went out of view although the two werewolves that came to meet him hadn’t moved an inch.
They were both unharmed, their expressions unreadable as they kept up their hands in a constant show of surrender.
Lukas leveled his gun on the seated werewolf, his injured bodyguard doing the same with his good hand at the werewolf standing behind him.
“Give me a good enough reason why I shouldn’t blow your heads off.” He said in a level voice, sounding not at all worried although he was in physical danger.
The bodyguards in the car must have heard the gunshots and he could trust them to handle the hidden sniper.
The seated werewolf was oddly calm, “I have none but could I urge you to listen for a moment, Your Highness?”
Lukas held his hand steady for a few more seconds before slowly lowering his gun, his bodyguard doing the same. “Speak.” He commanded, his phone vibrating as he did.
He held up a finger to stop the werewolf from talking while he checked the new message that he just got, fortunately it was from Alec. The dark shadows on his brows lightened when he read through the message, pocketing his phone after he was done.
He nodded to the Rogues, indicating that he was ready to listen to them.
The seated Rogue dropped his hands and the one standing behind him followed suit, Lukas could guess that the one who was seated was very important, perhaps their leader.
“I claim full responsibility for the unfortunate incident that just happened.” The seated Rogue said in measured tones, lacing his gloved fingers together on the table. “Your Highness may punish me as he sees fit.”
Lukas waited a couple beats, this was exactly why he couldn’t wipe out the Rogues using force, the revolutionary group was filled with honorable werewolves.
“Fortunately, I’m in a good mood.” He flipped his gun on his trigger finger and then slipped it back into his jacket. “How about you cancel your planned attack on the hotel and I’ll forget this ever happened.”
The seated Rogue rose to his feet and bowed slightly, “Your Highness is always generous as always.” He said mechanically, singing a different tune from the one he had earlier.
“I’ll even throw a favor in and let my attacker go scot-free.” Lukas added lightly, studying the Rogue intently.
Under normal circumstances, the Rogue that had attacked him would be getting holes put through him at worst and spending the rest of his life behind bars at best but Lukas needed the Rogues to owe him so that he would have the upper hand in their future bargains.
The Rogue looked up sharply at the Alpha King, he bowed again, deeper this time. “Thank you, your Highness.”
If the bodyguard beside Lukas had any protests about this, he clamped his mouth shut, a hand tightly pressing down on his bleeding injury.
Like they had been listening in on their conversation, one of the other two bodyguards that had been left behind called Lukas.
“We caught a little stowaway with a sniper rifle, what should we do with him?”
From how the Rogue werewolf’s attention was immediately drawn to the conversation that Lukas was having with his bodyguard, he could tell that the sniper was someone very important to him.
It would explain why the Rogue hadn’t even bothered with throwing blame around and immediately took the fall for him. His decision to spare his attacker might prove to be a very useful chip in the future.
“Let him go.” Lukas said shortly.
There was hesitation on the other side of the call, “S-Sir?”
“I said let him go.” He repeated, walking across the small, dingy motel room. “Bring the car around, we’re leaving.”

Lukas dismissed the injured bodyguard as soon as they got back to the mansion. They had stopped to get him treated before they began their journey back, a telltale bandage wrapped around his left shoulder.
Fortunately, the bullet had merely been a graze so he would be expected to make a quick and a full recovery.
Alec caught a glimpse of him before he left however and that was all the Viceroy needed to be at his scolding best. “They attacked you, Your Highness?” He asked in disbelief, walking beside Lukas as they went into the mansion.
Lukas bit back a sound of exasperation, the person that had attacked him was clearly young and inexperienced or he wouldn’t be standing right then. “I’ve handled it.” He said shortly, knowing that Alec would always win in an argument.
“Of course you have.” He scoffed, gripping his pad in a rare show of emotion. “I’ll be doubling the guards accompanying you next time.” He decided shortly, taking advantage of this situation to foist more guards on him.
Lukas couldn’t argue, he just wanted to retire to his desk and take it easy for now. He didn’t outrightly agree either, speeding up to get to his office faster. He would still always take the minimum possible amount of guards wherever he was going, regardless of what Alec said and they both knew it.
“Any word from Killian?” He asked the moment they got to his office, making his way across the large room to settle behind his desk.
Alec sat down stiffly without invitation, “No, nothing.” He answered shortly, uninterested in the Emissary. “What was the outcome of your meeting with the Rogues? Other than lead bullets?”
Lukas pushed a hand through his black hair, he knew very well that telling Alec that he had exchanged a pardon for his attacker with making the Rogues cease their attack would push his Viceroy over the edge so he left out the details.
“There’ll be no attacks.” He said shortly.
“For now,” Alec added, a loud look of disapproval on his angular face.
Lukas didn’t take the bait, Alec would only launch into another tirade of why he should stamp out the Rogues before it escalated even further.
Alec tapped his nails against the hard part of his clipboard, deciding to let the matter go for the meantime. “I’ve got some new updates…”

Claire and Rosie separated right before lunch, Claire retiring to her room to eat while Rosie went off to do the things that she needed to do.
Claire was certain that her personal assistant had gone back to her cubicle and was currently putting work in but she couldn’t dissuade her further, Rosie was free to keep working if she wanted to.
After how busy her days had become after she bumped into Lukas at the resort, it was odd to just sit in her room and do nothing. She couldn’t even take a nap because she had been sleeping a little too much recently.
She was already done with spending all of her time cooped up in the bedroom but she wasn’t ready to face the mess that was waiting for her if she went back to her daily routine. So she would rest for a few more days and enjoy the peace and quiet she currently had for as long as possible.
She also hoped that if she stayed away long enough, Killian would have gotten off whatever high horse he was on and would stop trying to play savior. She also didn’t want to see Lukas.
Claire fell back on her bed after eating lunch wondering if she should try again to get away from Lukas because she could feel her heart getting involved and if that happened, she was done for.
*‘Why did nothing ever go right for her?’*
