Chapter Twenty-three
Lukas kept a straight face. "My Fated mate." He casually responded, "Excuse me for a moment, I'll meet up with you in my study."
Alec could only gape as Lukas walked off in the direction of his rooms. The Alpha King couldn't have possibly said what he thought he heard.
*'A human mate? That was simply impossible!'*
But Lukas wouldn't joke about something like that. He had been searching for his Fated mate for years now, the search intensifying when he was made an Alpha King, there was no reason to lie about it and say it was a human nonetheless.
Alec shook himself free of his thoughts and walked briefly to Lukas' study, there were more pressing issues at hand. He was sure that Lukas would clarify what he really meant but first they had to get some work done.
He only had to wait for a few minutes before Lukas showed up, he didn't even give Lukas the chance to comfortably sit down before he got down to business again. He had already scolded the errant Alpha King enough over the phone, there was no time to waste anymore.
Lukas sat brooding in his office after religiously attending to issues that required his attention. Alec had briefly left to get something so he had a few precious minutes to himself.
He hadn't intended to introduce Claire as his Fated mate, although it would have gotten out eventually because he wasn't getting rid of her. Getting married to her was also something he couldn't be talked out of, it was the only thing to do because she was his. He doubted that Alec and his nagging aunt would be happy to hear that news though.
"I didn't get the chance to ask earlier, Where is Senite?" He asked when Alex returned.
Senite was his aunt and the only family of his left alive. He cared about her and it was evident that she loved him far too much but she was also a thorn in his side for that reason. She was always sticking her nose in his business, the only reason she wasn't nagging him yet had to be because she was yet to hear that he had returned.
"Shopping." Alec answered briefly. He spoke little unless it involved work, Lukas was long used to it.
"When will she be back?" Lukas asked warily, signing the documents that Alec had handed to him.
His second in command picked up the stack of documents after he was done signing. "Soon, I hope you're ready for an argument." He replied in his calm voice, walking away.
Lukas sighed at this, pushing his hand through his dark hair. He knew that there would be a lot of opposition to his decision so he wasn't bothered but his aunt was a particularly hard nut to crack. He would be getting an earful for days on end.
He stood up from his desk and started for the door, it was lunchtime so Alec would give him a breather for an hour or so. He also wanted to check up on Claire and ask her to lunch.
Lukas had made arrangements for Claire’s things to be transported from Lockwood to the city. Her mom had done the packing for her, mostly her personal things because Lukas was more than willing to get her a new wardrobe.
A handful of maids had been arranging the luggage before Lukas left, Claire fast asleep on his bed. He wondered if she had managed to convince the maids to help her escape again, the thought of it made him chuckle. Although there was no escaping his mansion, it wasn't the resort, she couldn't leave even if she tried.
He paused at the door to his bedroom, listening in on the conversation inside. To his surprise, Claire was having a lively conversation with the maids, they seemed to have taken to her.
He opened the door without warning, noting the way everyone in the room flinched in shock. The maids bowed deeply and quickly made themselves scarce, whispering amongst themselves as they left.
"Making new friends already?" He approached her.
Claire had a sour look on her face, a sharp contrast from the smile she had been sporting earlier. "Why are you here?"
Lukas walked up to a cabinet built into the wall to pour himself a drink. "It's also my room, where else would I be?"
Claire looked stricken by this information. "You plan to sleep in here?"
"Hmm? Are you turning me out of my room now?" He hummed, taking a sip of his drink.
The bedroom in question was easily twice as large as the master bedroom back at the resort, it was decorated in soft warm tones, royalty steeped in every elaborately carved furniture.
"No, I'll leave, let me have my own room." Claire requested.
There was an elaborately designed table and shelf right under the cabinet, Lukas placed his half drained cup on the shelf and walked to Claire who was seated on the bed.
He noted that she had cleaned up and changed into a silky black dress with thin straps, her hair was also styled, most likely the work of the maids.
"Now why would I want to keep my favorite toy that far away from me?" He asked, taking her hand. "We're going to be engaged in less than a week, it's only right that we share the same bedroom." He concluded warmly, a sharp contrast to the chilly words he said previously.
Claire snatched back her hand and got up to walk around the king-sized bed to put some distance in between them. "I'll be sleeping on the ground then because I won't be sharing a bed with you." She said decisively, eyeing the expensive carpet like she was gauging how comfortable it would be to sleep on.
Lukas followed right after her, placing a hand around her waist. "You will, little human." He countered her. "I won't hesitate to cuff you to the bed if I have to."
