Chapter Fifty

Claire only rose to her feet after she was done eating, Lukas doing the same like he had been waiting for her to end their sham of a dinner.
“I’ll walk you to your car.” He offered to Alina who shot to her feet with a reddened face.
“You’re not going to let me sleep over like old times?” She demanded.
Lukas managed to remain calm, “Your father never let you sleep over, I don’t think he would appreciate it this time.”
Claire was over playing audience to whatever staged performance Alina kept pulling, she left the dining room in time to hear Alina whine to Lukas about coming to pay a visit to her ‘daddy’s castle’.
Maybe she would have been jealous if she and Lukas were genuinely together but she had barely gotten what they had figured out, there was no space for jealousy. Whatever Alina was trying to do was futile, she wasn’t going to fall for it.
Especially with the circumstances surrounding her pretense. If she wanted to pull an act, the least she could do was to get her partner in crime to cooperate but Lukas just seemed exhausted with her.
The satisfaction of the success of the library unveiling kept her smiling as she cleaned up and got into her big, empty bed. Her day had been busy enough that she was spared the intrusive thoughts about Lukas before sleep claimed her.

Claire woke up before Rosie could show up the next morning, getting dressed and heading to her office before her assistant. Having something to do took her attention off her current situation and the cause of it.
She opened the door to her office to find Rosie already there, the bubbly redhead was just settling into her cubicle.
“Good morning, Luna Claire, I was just about to come get you.” She beamed, walking over.
“Oh, it’s fine. Have you had breakfast yet?” Claire asked, sitting behind her desk to briefly check her emails.
“Not yet,” Rosie admitted sheepishly, “I was in too much of a hurry to get to work.”
Claire frowned and it wasn’t at what she saw on her laptop screen, she would have to really say something to Lukas about Rosie. It must be a lot of work for the young lady to have to leave here so late and return early.
“Alright, let’s have breakfast together.” She rose to her feet with a kind smile. There were no urgent emails that required her immediate attention so she would get to work after a hearty breakfast.
“Is there anything important on my calender today?” Claire asked thoughtfully as they made their way down the hallway to the dining room.
“Yes, you have an important afternoon lunch with Alpha King Lukas and an important emissary from the Ministry of Human-Were Inter-relations.”
Claire nearly stumbled at this, “I have lunch with Lukas?” She repeated to Rosie to be certain that she hadn’t misheard.
Rosie nodded, a little surprised like she had expected Claire to already know this.
Claire felt the same way, she had dinner with Lukas, why didn’t he tell her something as important as this?
“Is there anything else?”
“An art exhibition invitation that can be declined.” Rosie quickly said.
Claire sighed in relief, she didn’t think she was up for anything else after surviving lunch with Lukas in public. It didn’t help that the other guest was someone very important, it meant that she had to actually make an effort to enjoy a meal with her arch-nemesis.
“Please decline,” She was quick to give the go-ahead.
After lunch with Lukas, she would just give Rosie the rest of the day off. Her helpful assistant would need it especially if she managed to convince Lukas to let her move into one of the first floor guest rooms.
“Done.” Rosie murmured, hurrying forward to open one of the double doors of the dining room for Claire to go in.
Claire nearly stopped in place and turned around when she saw who was seated on one of the many chairs around the long dining table.
It was none other than Alina, had the skank slept over after all? Claire decided then that she didn’t care if she slept over or not.
“Don’t leave on my account,” Alina called to her when she noticed her hesitation, “Or leave, I don’t care.” She added in a shrill voice, a malicious glint in her dark eyes.
That made Claire’s mind up for her, Alina was clearly out for blood. If it were just Claire, she wouldn’t have cared but she didn’t want the jobless European princess coming for sweet Rosie.
She turned around and just walked off, Rosie quick tp follow her with a confused frown on her pretty face. Outside the door, she bumped into Lukas and she had to fight the urge to curse. *How difficult was it to have a peaceful breakfast?*
“Have you had breakfast yet?” Lukas politely asked her.
Claire narrowed her eyes in suspicion, wondering why Lukas suddenly cared. “No, we seem to have a bit of a rodent problem.” She said in clear tones, loud enough for Alina to overhear.
“I heard that!” The bleached blonde’s shrill voice came from the dining table and soon enough, she was stomping over with loudly clicking heels. “Luka, did you hear what she called me?” She whined, hurrying to him.
Lukas didn’t wait for her to get to her target, he took Claire by the arm and walked to the next room.
Claire was caught offguard by this but she didn’t protest, going along with Lukas. She let herself be pulled into an unoccupied room, crossing her arms when Lukas closed the door after them.
She cocked a brow and waited expectantly to hear what Lukas had to say, her blonde hair in waves down her arms.
“Did you bring me here just to stare?” She prodded when he said nothing for at least a full minute.
Lukas pushed a hand through his dark hair, his frustration clear on his face. “I need to ask you a favor.”
