Chapter Forty-seven
Claire slowly settled behind her large desk, her chair was comfortable and so soft that she sank right in. Everything in the office space was done in a soft shade of gold which reflected the morning sun beautifully.
She only allowed herself to languidly rest in the chair for a few moments before straightening up once more, she had to get work done. She fired up the laptop and logged into her college’s website, concentrating intently.
Due to Lukas’ interference, her two years of college was compressed into six months of rigorous classes, tests and exams. *‘Was it even possible to get a college to agree to that?’*
Claire was pulled away from course materials, upcoming projects and a variety of other things by Rosie's voice.
“Luna Claire? It’s time for lunch.”
Claire closed her laptop with a sigh, stretching to work the kinks out of her shoulders, “Thank you, Rosie.” She got to her feet, feeling a dull ache in her spine. She couldn’t believe that she had let the time get away from her.
Claire started for the doorway, expecting Rosie to come with her. So when she didn’t she turned around to address her. “Aren’t you eating lunch?”
Rosie touched her face nervously, “I’ll get something from the kitchens…”
“Why would you do that? Aren’t we eating together?”
Rosie’s hazel eyes went wide in surprise, “We-We are? I-I mean, of course.” She hurried forward to Claire’s side, a skip in her steps.

“What time is the library unveiling?” Claire asked Rosie on their way back to the office after lunch.
“By four PM, I’ll make arrangements with Mr Alec to prepare a vehicle to take you.”
Claire couldn’t help but marvel at how efficient Rosie was, it was nice to have someone who knew what they were doing on her side. She was aware that there was more on her schedule but Rosie had been strongly cautioned to not allow her take on too much.
Claire couldn’t even complain about that, she would be busy with college for at least a full week before she caught up and could now take it easy. So her plans for the rest of her day was to return to schoolwork until she had to leave for the unveiling.
Rosie opened the door for Claire only to freeze up after taking a few steps in, awe on her face. She just quickly bowed and hurried along to her cubicle, leaving Claire to face the unannounced visitor in her office.
Claire slowed down slightly when she saw Lukas sitting right in her chair, her hesitance only lasting a few seconds before she strode in. She hadn’t seen him in over a day but it wasn’t her doing, it was Lukas that stayed away from her.
She wasn’t going to melt into a puddle just because they had sex, “What a surprise to see you here, did you lose your way again?” Claire asked in a level voice, struggling a bit to keep her eyes on Lukas’ face.
She was tempted to let her eyes wander down the hard planes of his face, over his unbuttoned black shirt, across his well-formed arms pushing against the fabric of his silk shirt… She quickly flicked her eyes back to his face, she had fallen for the temptation.
Lukas response was a soft monosyllabic laugh, “Is your new office space to your liking?”
Claire swallowed down disappointment, of course Lukas would only come for a formal reason like that. “It’s not terrible,” She said grudgingly, “And if that’ll be all, I need to get back to work.”
Lukas rose to his feet to make way for her, “Sure.”
Claire got into her seat after Lukas vacated it for her, trying not to think about how the warmth had come from his body. It would seem that things had gotten even worse after they had sex, but Lukas wasn’t trying to make her miserable anymore, so she would take it as a plus.
Lukas turned around when he got to the door, a thoughtful expression on his face, looking like he had something to say.
Claire unconsciously found herself remembering the range of expressions that Lukas’ handsome face could take, it made her feel a little hot and it wasn’t from the warmth of her luxurious leather chair.
“Have dinner with me,” He offered.
Claire hadn’t been expecting this, she had hoped that she would keep growing distant from Lukas until he got bored of her and they separated. All they had done was an engagement, they were yet to be married so it should be fairly easy for him to get rid of her.
Although everyone was quick to treat her as the Luna Queen, Claire didn’t let it go to her head. She had to be prepared for the ground to be pulled out from underneath her at any time.
“Do I have a choice?” She cocked a brow.
Lukas waited a few beats before replying, “No.” He said simply, walking out.
Claire slumped against her seat, of course Lukas hadn’t changed, what was she thinking? He was probably swamped with work and it was the reason why he hadn’t gotten the chance to make her miserable.
She straightened up after a few minutes of moping, putting on her laptop again. She hadn’t forgotten her personal decision to make things just as difficult for Lukas as he did for her. Sure he would break her heart but she would hurt him in return.
Claire wasn’t the violent type but when dealing with someone like Lukas, you had to fight fire with fire or you stood to lose everything.
She glanced at Rosie's cubicle, wondering if her personal assistant had been privy to the conversation she just had with Lukas. Claire found that she was inclined to keep up the pretense that all was well to the people around her.
Maybe she did it because it was just easier that way, she already had a lot to deal with, adding other people’s opinion to the mix wasn’t a great idea. Her entanglement with Lukas was far too complicated and ran too deep for outside interference to fix. They would have to figure it out for themselves.
Claire wasn’t too hopeful about that though, the only way to fix things would be to leave each other’s lives.
