Chapter Sixty-four

Lukas sat behind his desk with a grim expression, he had been having a serious conversation with Alec when the call from the gate came in.
He hadn’t thought twice before approving the drive like his body was hardwired to fulfill whatever request Claire made of him, unless it involved leaving him.
It was only after the call hung up that he thought about the potential danger of letting Claire leave the mansion at night. For all he knew Killian might be keeping tabs on who left the gates of his mansion.
So as soon as the first call dropped, he rang up a different bodyguard. “I want you to take four men out and trail behind the Luna Queen, make yourselves as inconspicuous as possible, and unless she’s in immediate danger don’t engage.” He ordered. “Report to me if you notice anything odd.”
Words of affirmation came across the line, Lukas hanging up afterward. He dropped his phone on his desk and buried his hands in his hair, a constant furrow in between his brows.
Alec sat across from him, the Viceroy was as stoic as always, his usual clipboard in hand as he stared expectantly at Lukas through his glasses.
Lukas had suggested that he switch over to using a digital pad as it was more effective and naturally stored more information. But Alec preferred to go by the old fashioned method of making notes, by pen and paper.
“Back to our conversation, Your Highness,” Alec said calmly. “I recommend that you wipe out the Rogues at once.”
Lukas’ messed up his hair again with his hands, “I can’t do that.”
“It’ll happen anyway if the Human Government finds out, which they will if this matter keeps stretching out.” He argued, still keeping his cool. “The difference will be that you’ll show more empathy and there wouldn’t be a huge mess left over to be cleaned up.”
“Alec, you call them Rogues but they’re werewolves with families and jobs…” Lukas countered, steel intent in his eyes.
“They intend to usurp your throne,” Alec leaned forward, not backing down either. “They have to face the consequences for their actions.”
“They’re merely trying to lead a revolution.” The Alpha King leaned back in his seat in turn, “And I approve of what they’re fighting for.”
“Against the bloody Human Government!” Alec placed down his hard backed clipboard on the desk with a soft thud. “Do they think this is some fantasy novel? They can’t win against the humans.”
“Which is why I’m trying to convince them to come up with an alternative solution.”
Alec huffed out a breath, “And how is that working out for you?”
Lukas winced, “Whose side are you on anyway?”
“Your side, which is why I’m trying to fix this as soon as possible.” He said with a solemn expression. “This is a bad time for another attack, Killian has you in his sights, we can’t let him find out about this.”
Lukas’ expression tightened at the mention of the Emissary, he knew Alec was right but all he could think about was how much he wanted to use the aggravating human as target practice.
“Leave this to me, I’ll talk to them.” Lukas said.
Alec looked like he wanted to say something more but he stopped himself. “Very well, Your Highness,” He reluctantly acquiesced, picking up his clipboard to take down some notes. “I'll schedule an appointment with them as soon as possible.”
“Thanks, anything else?” Lukas asked, glancing at his phone like he expected it to ring at any moment.
There was something else but it wasn’t an urgent matter, and Alec could clearly see that Lukas no longer had the attention span to deal with anything else.
“Not right now.” He said, rising to his feet. “You should get some sleep Lukas, that isn’t a suggestion.”
Lukas said nothing in response, quietly watching Alec walk out of his office. It was odd for his Viceroy to refer to him by his name, although Lukas insisted on this, Alec more often than not used his title.
He knew that Alec was right, he couldn’t keep spending his nights in his home office. He rose to his feet after the door clicked shut, picked up his phone and walked out the door as well.
Perhaps getting some sleep was far out of his reach but at least he could make an effort. He had a guest room where all his things were moved into but he hardly spent the night there. More often than not, he pulled all nighters in his office much to Alec’s disapproval.
Instead of going to the guest room to take a shower and probably try to get some sleep, he found himself in front of their bedroom for the second time that day.
Claire wasn’t in though so this time time he pushed open the door and stepped in. He had just been in the bedroom the day before but it felt like ages since he had been in here.
The room smelled like Claire, it calmed him down, easing out the tension in his shoulders that he hadn’t even been aware of.
Lukas walked to the center of the room and then stopped, unsure of what to do. He had come here with no plan in mind but he wasn’t ready to leave yet, reluctantly to lose Claire’s scent.
He ended up taking a shower in the bathroom, putting on a bathrobe after he was done. He felt like an intruder of sorts like he was sneaking around in Claire’s absence… which was exactly what he was doing.
He should be leaving now after taking a shower but the bed called to him, not because he was sleepy but because it had the highest concentration of Claire’s scent.
Without planning too, Lukas found himself getting comfortable and what do you know? He started to feel drowsy mere minutes after lying in a cloud of Claire’s scent.
It would explain why he always slept well whenever he spent the night with her. He couldn’t fall asleep here though he really wanted to. He couldn’t face Claire, not right now when he felt so vulnerable around her.
He was wary of blurting out something stupid around her, and what’s more, he knew that he wouldn’t be able to keep his hands off her if he did.
