Chapter Seventy-nine

"...did you get a ransom note?" Killian called out, picking up the pace to catch up with Lukas. "Don't fucking ignore me!" He snarked, running to catch up to Lukas.
Lukas stopped so abruptly that Killian nearly ran into him. "You're lucky that's the only thing I'm doing." He said in a quiet voice had held a dangerous timbre.
Killian knew when to shut the fuck up, after all, he was out on a deserted street at night with a werewolf. He was also currently off duty and be hadn't told anyone where he was going, Lukas could literally end him right then and no one would be the wiser.
"Thought so." Lukas muttered to himself when Killian finally shut up and gave him some distance.
His mansion was a little isolated for privacy so it meant that there was a long strip of empty road banked by uninhabited forests. It was this path that Lukas took, he started off running in his human form, shifting mid-sprint and letting his large paws hit the ground instead.
His shirt ripped as he shifted into his wolf but he didn't pay it any attention. His blood felt like it was boiling over, he needed to do something to distract himself from the fact that his mate was in mortal danger and there was literally nothing he could do to save her but wait.
Lukas didn't care that Killian would be able to see him shift under the dim lighting of the crescent moon, all he concentrated on was the wind rushing against his fur as he ran down the empty road.
He was certain he looked like a nightmare running down the street like this, huge clawed paws slamming into the tarred ground with considerable strength. His speed took him far from Killian in a short amount of time, not like he turned around to check.
Lukas couldn't just keep running down the street so when he got far enough that if he went any further, he would break out into residential areas, he swerved into the forest. It wasn't exactly a crime to run around the city in wolf form but Lukas didn't want to make it into the eight o'clock news so it was best that he avoided areas where other people were.
His vision was considerably increased when he shifted so he could run through the dark forest without hassle, his thoughts filled with nothing but his mate.
The one thing he could never do was let her go but yet he had lost her, she had been taken from right under his nose. It filled Lukas with so much rage that he howled at the dimming moon, the terrifying sound carrying through the city.
Anyone who heard it, werewolf or human were presented with the image of a wounded beast. The sound cause goosebumps to prickle on the skin of whoever heard it, even someone like Killian.
It didn't help that he was very close to Lukas, without being told he immediately turned around and hightailed it back to the mansion.
Killian liked to tell himself that Lukas hated humans and perhaps that much was true but it was painfully obvious that Claire wasn't a part of that group. He wanted Lukas to despise Claire so that he could swoop in like knight in shining armor to save her from him and take her for himself.
But it was evident that Lukas was far too smitten by his fiancée, it was like a case of the evil beast falling for the girl. It was best if Killian kept his distance from them after this but for now, he was going to stick around until he was sure that Claire was safe.
If she didn't want to leave Lukas, Killian couldn't force her to.
Back at the mansion, Rosie was deposited on one of the leather sofas that were positioned against the far wall of Lukas' office. She hadn't bothered to change out of her outfit, tears smearing her makeup.
Alec had her covered with a blanket that he had ordered for her and pushed a mug of steaming chocolate into her hands to calm her down. And while she peacefully sipped on her drink and stared into space, he busied himself with making calls.
H wasn't surprised to get a call from the gates that Killian had returned and was requesting entrance. Frankly, he had expected Lukas to kill off the annoying Emissary.
He allowed the human to be let in again, knowing that it would be impossible to get rid of him now that he was already in the middle of the shitshow going down.
Alec had a bodyguard bring the Emissary up to Lukas' office so that he could keep an eye on him, he didn't trust Killian.
As soon as Killian showed up, he started asking questions again. "What do you know about the people who took..."
"Shut up and take a sit or I'll have you thrown out." Alec said coldly.
He wasn't obligated to be polite to the Emissary, not when he was literally trespassing. But he needed to keep an eye on him and this was the best way to do it.
Killian looked like he would like to say more but one looked at Alec's dark expression made him quiet down. Not because he couldn't go right ahead and keep talking but because he was more interested in rescuing Claire so he was willing to be tolerant.
Alec was relieved when the Emissary actually quieted down and stopped asking annoying questions, returning to his call.
"See anything yet, Logan?" He requested.
The private security agent had been on the lookout ever since Alec sent the word.
He could literally hear the disappointment in the man's voice. "Nothing, it's almost like they went ghost."
Alec frowned, "Are you suggesting that they're still in the city?"
Logan shrugged, the rustling sound his clothes made travelling throught the phone. "We can't rule that out."
"There were at least four black vehicles all driving on tandem, its very hard to miss, not to mention impossible to hide." Killian spoke up after a while of extended silence, leveling a look at Alec's phone like he could see through to the person on the other side.
Tense silence came from the other side of the phone, Logan clearing his throat after a few stretched out seconds. "Fine, I'll spread out my men further." He said shortly, hanging up.
