Chapter Thirty-five
Lukas didn’t sleep in their shared bedroom that night, nor the next four nights after. Claire also rarely saw him during the day, it was almost like he went on a business trip.
So it meant that for close to five days, she had been free from Lukas but somehow it didn't make her happy. Maybe it was because she knew that he was probably just busy and would soon return to keep making her life a living hell.
She couldn't understand why he seemed to be avoiding her though, it troubled her, making her sleep badly. She rarely saw him so she couldn't tell what he was plotting and that thoroughly unsettled her.
It was a Friday morning, the morning her parents would be coming to the mansion and the morning before her engagement ball. The week had flown by much to Claire’s unhappiness, she felt like a different person and looked like one too after all the pampering her body got from the different expensive spas and salons.
She laid on the large bed all alone, staring up at the chandelier above the bed and feeling like a princess trapped in a tower, waiting for her Prince Charming. The only problem was that she had already found him but he was the one that locked her up in the tower.
A knock on the door made her shoot upright, her leaf green eyes wide in surprise. *'Could it be Lukas?'*
It couldn't possibly be the maids because she told them not to come up to the shared bedroom until she rang for them and Rachel would never come personally to find her here because she still believed that Claire slept beside Alpha Lukas. Claire didn't try to correct her assumptions.
*'So who else could it be but Lukas?'*
"Claire? Are you up yet?" Lola's familiar voice came from the door and Claire immediately hurried off the bed to unlock the door.
She was dressed in a luxurious red, short silk robe, stopping to put on her furry slippers before hurrying to the door.
"Lola! Hi," She smiled after opening the door, slightly out of breath. "Oh, Senite, I had no idea you were here too…" Claire trailed off when she took in their tense expressions, her heart sinking. "Wait, did something happen?"
"Yes!" Lola exclaimed excitedly, seeming unable to hold in her spilling emotions. "Do you mind if we come in or do you want to move this to the receiving room?"
Claire truly didn't want to change out of her robes, she planned to get back in bed because today was the one free day she had, she planned to fully utilize it to sleep herself to a coma - hopefully.
But, a part of her felt guilty about inviting other people to Lukas' bedroom and she wasn’t even sure why. "Let's move it to the receiving room." She decided.
Claire fully intended to remain in her current state of undress till her parents showed up at noon so she marched out of the bedroom still wearing the robes. She let Lola and Senite lead the way, her hair draping down her back. Her hair was full of uniform, bouncy curls, it was the prettiest her hair had ever been in her
whole life.
"So what happened that has you two so shaken?" Claire gave in to her curiosity as they approached the receiving room.
"The announcement of your engagement to Lukas has been released to the media and it is the number one trending topic in the world right now!" Lola giggled, looking overwhelmed with excitement even Senite looked just as invested in it.
Claire however was horrified. She had been holding onto a little flame of hope that the entire engagement ball had been nothing but a sham orchestrated by Lukas for some larger devious plan but now it had been certified to be very real.
Senite opened the door at that moment, a frown on her face. "What's the matter, Claire? You look pale…"
Claire’s complexion worsened even further when she looked into the room and found Lukas seated on a sofa like he owned the place while Alec discussed something with him.
"Oh, Lukas! we weren't expecting to bump into you here, what incredible luck." Senite beamed, taking Claire’s hand to pull her into the room like she suspected that Claire would try to make a run for it.
Lukas struggled to keep a blank face as he watched the little human struggle imperceptibly with his aunt. It had been quite a while since he had seen her up close, much less touched her, that would all change after tomorrow.
"Hello, Aunt," He smiled politely, the expression didn't touch his dark eyes.
Alec just stood quietly at a corner, preferring to not be a part of the conversation while Lola hesitated at the doorway, starstruck at the sight of Lukas.
Senite just waved her nephew's greetings away, carefully placing Claire on the space beside Lukas much to her mortification. "Have you seen the reactions to the media announcement of your engagement? But before that, why didn't you tell me that you were approving a press release on the matter?"
Claire blinked in surprise, Lukas had been the one to personally inform the media? What was he planning this time?
"I haven't seen the reactions, Aunt, want to tell me about them?" Lukas invited with a faint smile, blatantly ignoring her second question.
Senite was too excited about what she had to say to drag the issue with him, beckoning Lola to come closer so she could give the report as she held the pad that had been used to check.
Claire kept her gaze forward, refusing to look at Lukas although he was staring holes into the side of her face.
"What's so interesting on my face?" She finally cracked and furiously whispered to him.
Lukas' response was a soft laugh, a sound that Claire had never heard before. It shocked her so much that she found herself looking at him which was a big mistake because while there was a smile on his face, his eyes were dark and wild like a stormy night, it made her shiver involuntarily. She felt like prey under his gaze.
