Chapter Twenty-eight
Claire felt depressed after she got off the phone with her mom, she felt a little lost and in over her head with what was going on around her.
Suddenly realizing that she had a life outside of her upcoming engagement to Lukas, she quickly went through her mail and texts. For the first time, she was hoping to see an email from a lecturer giving some projects or assignments out, anything that would keep her distracted.
There was none though, she didn’t get any personal texts either, the only texts were from group chats and none were even directed at her. For the first time she felt lonely.
She still felt weird about talking to Rachel but she wasn’t going to let an unplanned situation get in between her and her only childhood friend’s relationship. So she braced herself and rang up Rachel.
The call rang twice and then Rachel picked up. “Claire? Hi.” She awkwardly answered the phone, an indecipherable emotion in her voice.
“Rachel, I can’t believe you would do this to me.” Claire responded, exaggerating. “I thought we were friends.”
Rachel was caught off guard by this, she couldn’t tell if Claire was being serious or not. “Wait, what? What did I do?”
Claire kept the gig going. “What did you not do? You threw me at your Alpha King and then ditched me, what if I died?
Rachel had finally caught on to the joke and she started to laugh, all of the awkwardness in her voice disappearing as she did. “I’m so sorry about that, Claire.” She apologized sincerely. “I should have done better, what can I do to make up for it?” Her voice was light, matching with Claire’s teasing but there was an underlying trace of seriousness in her words.
“Easy, I want you to drive down to the city.” Claire immediately answered, also very serious despite nearly laughing. “I’m going to be engaged in a week and I don’t know anyone here, please save me.”
Rachel laughed again. “Sure thing, I’ll set out tomorrow.” She agreed.
Claire’s eyes widened, she hadn’t been expecting Rachel to accept so easily. “Really?”
“Of course! What are friends for? Besides, it's not like I have anything better to do, I’ll come save you tomorrow.”
All of Claire’s loneliness disappeared with those few words, maybe she could even convince Lukas to let her share a room with Rachel until the engagement. She would take whatever help she could get.
“You’re the best, Rachel!” She sniffed, wishing she could hug her bubbly wilful friend. “Call me when you start out.”
“Sure thing, I’ve got to go now, we’ll talk later.”
After saying their byes, the call ended and Claire could smile freely, falling on her back on the bed with a lingering smile on her face. Now that Rachel would be coming over, she didn’t feel so desolate anymore.
She sat up again, remembering college, she hadn’t gotten the chance to think about that but she still had a couple years to go in college, Lukas couldn’t keep her from that. Her smile widened at this thought, when it was time to return to college she would be free from Lukas and by the time she was done, she was certain that he would have lost interest in her.
She absently fiddled with the crescent pendant hanging down her collar bones as she went over her plans to put distance between her and Lukas. She only had two weeks left of holidays left, after the engagement, she would just have to spend a week with Lukas and then she would be off to school, it was a foolproof plan.
So when maids knocked on the door to get her ready for dinner, Claire had no complaints, letting them do as they wished. She was dressed in a long flowy dress this time, her hair gathered up in a loose bun with curly tendrils framing her face.
The dress was a dark green beauty with elaborate sleeves, she was worn green crystal earrings and when the maids asked to change her necklace, she turned them down without even thinking. She was also worn pretty flat sandals instead of the heels she had been subjected to constantly, it was Claire’s favorite part of the outfit.
She had never gotten to wear such pretty outfits before, it really did make her feel like a princess. The maids were also extra helpful, wanting her to try on everything.
Claire forced herself to take deep calming breaths as she walked behind the maid that was leading her to the dining room. She was actually looking forward to dinner, comfortable sandals aside because she would finally get a chance to accomplish her plans. She hadn’t gotten a chance to see Lukas all day, she guessed that he must have been busy.
“Thank you.” She smiled politely to the maid who bowed enthusiastically and happily floated away.
Bracing herself to face Lukas, she pushed open the door that led to the dining room, expecting to see Lukas seated already because he had been the one to request for her that they have dinner together.
Lukas looked up as she walked on, interest in his deep blue eyes as he trailed her every step over to him.
Claire was the one to willingly sit beside Lukas, her nervousness evident from her jittery she was. “Hi.” She murmured, getting comfortable.
Lukas looked amused, wondering what his little human had up her sleeve this time. “You look like you have a lot to say.” He pointed out.
Claire shot him a sharp look, she hadn’t been planning to be so transparent. Well, the servants weren’t here yet so it was best if she got it over with already. “Yes, I do.” She sat up straighter, squaring her shoulders.
Lukas let his gaze fall from Claire’s eyes to her neck and down lower, he had been expecting her to get rid of the necklace again, she always surprised him. “I’m all ears,” He gave her the go ahead, sipping a glass of whiskey.
Claire’s expression soured. “You shouldn’t drink so much, it’s unhealthy.” She snapped out without thinking, looking just as shocked as Lukas at her words.
