Chapter Thirty-four
After the tour of the mansion, Claire had lunch with Rachel and then walked her to her room on the first floor so she could get some rest.
"Is this how everyone else treats you here?" Rachel asked when they got to her room, she looked particularly upset.
She couldn't help but worry about Claire. Just because she had felt awkward, she didn't reach out to her friend when Claire must have been suffering so much. She couldn't imagine how difficult it must have been for her to adapt to living with werewolves.
"Of course not." Claire quickly restructured her view on the people that worked with her Alpha King. "Liv was the first mean person."
"I do believe you." Rachel grudgingly agreed, going to gingerly sit on the bed.
"I have to return to my room now, will you be alright to stay here alone? I can move in with you if you would…"
Rachel’s good-natured laughter cut her off. "What am I? Five? I'm just fine, Claire. You don't need to babysit me."
Claire gulped silently as her plans to escape Lukas fell apart. If she remained in their shared room, it was only a matter of time before he showed up. She was a little scared of confronting him.
Rachel quickly shooed her out of her room after thayband Claire was left with no choice but to return to her room as well.
She fully expected to see Lukas waiting in there for her so she was a little disappointed to find the large bedroom empty. She stepped in and started to undress, heading for the closet to pick out comfortable indoor clothes.
Claire frowned when she held open the closet door and found empty spaces on the hangers. Now their shared closet was enormous, a large group of people could easily fit in in with space to spare which meant that a lot of clothes had to be taken away for her to notice the spaces.
Not just any clothes, it was specifically Lukas' outfits that were gone because all of her clothes were still intact.
This made hope soar in Claire’s chest, had Lukas actually moved out of the bedroom? That would be very unlike him because how would he make hee miserable if he wasn't sharing the same space with her?
It could just be that he was getting his clothes dry cleaned and she got the wrong idea. That had to be it!
Or had Lukas started to get tired of her? He made it out like he would never get tired of torturing her but what if?
What if she could actually get away from the man that was constantly trying to ruin her? It was difficult to not be hopeful.
Claire couldn't help but think back to the entire mess with Liv. Lukas had clearly been ignoring her then, why would he turn around and take such drastic measures on her behalf?
With the earlier situations, it had been easy to call them coincidences, that Senite and Alec were just trying to be nice to her while saying that Lukas was behind it.
But there was no way Alec could have know about Liv, the only person that had been a witness to what she did was Lukas… so could that possibly mean….
Claire shook her head to dispel her troublesome thoughts, she was definitely reading too much into this. There was no way that Lukas would suddenly change his opinion of her, or suddenly want to be nice to her.
She wouldn't even be accepting it, she just wanted to escape the crazy man, for good this time.
But the security around the mansion was tight, she wouldn't be able to leave the front doors without getting caught. So it seemed like she was truly caught in Lukas' trap and would be forced to become the Luna Queen.
Claire went off to the bathroom to take a shower, deciding to take a nap instead of giving herself a headache of things that didn't matter.
What did it matter if Lukas had moved out of their shared bedroom? He was probably doing it out of disgust for her being a human. Claire was just exhausted, she wished she knew exactly what Lukas wanted from her.
The hot shower helped to calm her down some, she wasn't going to be alone anymore. She had Rachel and hee parents would be coming in a few days.
It was a bit far-fetched but she also had Senite, Lola and Alec on her side. She would just have to give back to Lukas every bit of trouble that he ever caused her until he could no longer stand her. Then she could be on her merry way, doing as she wished.
It was a solid plan but it didn't fix the issues that were right on Claire’s laps. She had gone along with it because there was nothing else she could do but the hair salons, the spa treatments and the fancy boutiques were all overwhelming her.
She had to be up early tomorrow to learn proper etiquette and to commit the names of important guests to memory. The day after that was more spa treatments and so on. Claire felt like she was losing herself in the midst of all of the ceremonies, it was a little scary.
How would the guest take to the American Alpha King having a human mate? The situation with Liv had shown her where she stood with the werewolf population.
Some might be kind and accepting but the majority would be coming for her throat. Claire already had enough on her hand dealing with Lukas, she didn't think she could handle all the werewolves in the world as well.
All of Claire’s burdening thoughts made her eyes heavy but her mind refused to rest so she remained awake on the painfully empty bed.
She could probably talk to Rachel to distract herself but her friend was already suspicious of her, she didn't want to give Rachel any more ammunition. She could have probably told Rachel everything to take some load off her mind but she didn't want to ruin her friend's image of Lukas.
It was clear that Rachel idolized him, not to mention, he had never been mean to her, it was solely Claire that he had a problem with.
