Chapter Thirty-eight

“Lu-Lukas?” Claire stammered with wide eyes, stepping back involuntarily.
Lukas stopped her with an arm around her waist, “I believe it’s time for us to get engaged.”
Claire scoffed, struggling slightly. “Y-You wish, let go of me.”
Lukas was dressed like a king, with a crown on his head, his overcoat made of black silk and embroidered with dark red and silver to match Claire.
His dark blue eyes sparkled. “Trying to run away again?”
Claire was no match for Lukas so she had no choice but to go with him. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you? No! I’m not going to give you the satisfaction of chasing me down.”
Lukas still had a possessive arm around her waist but now he used his free hand to tip her jaw so that she would look up at him. “I see that you missed me.”
Claire turned her face away. “Did you walk into a wall? Why would I miss you?”
At this point, they got to the side door specially prepared for them to enter the ballroom. Servants were lined up outside so Claire stopped arguing, fixing a fake smile on her face.
The door was opened for them and they both walked forward. Claire couldn’t see inside the ballroom because the lights were dimmed out but Lukas also had such a tight grip on her which pressed her up against him and limited her line of vision.
She was going with malicious compliance, Lukas didn’t have to worry about her running.
The lights came on, a series of spotlights coming on one after the other above them. The crowd started cheering at this, their cheers getting louder when a rainfall of rose petals fell over them. Lola had really outdone herself.
Things only went perfectly for a short period of time though because by the time Lukas went down on one knee to propose to her, soft murmurs started up in the crowd.
Claire’s heart started thumping and it wasn’t due to the nerves of her proposal, the murmurs were really loud in her head, and it was a surprise she was able to hear Lukas clearly.
“Be mine, Claire.”
Claire woodenly put out her left hand for Lukas to slip on the engagement ring. It had a delicate silver base, and tiny rubies encircling a large black diamond.
Why was he doing this? He didn’t want her because she was human and considering the murmurs rapidly filling the ballroom, the werewolf guests equally weren’t pleased that she turned out to be human. Claire just wanted to turn around and run back to her room.
There was a delayed cheer after the ring was slipped on her finger to show the guests' confusion. After the whole debacle was over, the entire ballroom was lit up again and Claire’s eyes widened at the number of people that had shown up.
These were all people that Lukas knew or had connections to… her gloomy thoughts were cut off when her parents came hurrying over with the biggest smiles on their faces, it made Claire want to cry.
“Oh Sunshine, I’m so happy for you.” Julia hugged her daughter. She was dressed in a soft grey dress, Matt wearing a matching suit with her.
“Thank you, mom.”
“Take care of my little girl, Lukas.” Matt shook hands with Lukas. “Ad congratulations.”
That kickstarted the wave of people coming to congratulate them. A nice looking couple who were polite to her although they gave her odd looks, Senite hurrying over to give her congratulations. Some old due in a priest’s outfit, another sour faced woman who wore a crisp business suit although it was an engagement party.
Everyone they met were polite, even to Claire but Claire was sure that it was because they didn’t want to get on Lukas’ bad side. Because for all their polite congratulations and awkward conversations, they all looked at her oddly.
Claire did know a handful of people, however, like the Luna Queen of Korea, Kim Yae-ji. The werewolf royalty in Asia was a matriarchy. She was gorgeous and was one of the few people that acted like they already knew that she was human.
“Your Luna Queen is gorgeous, Lukas.” She said coquettishly to Lukas in a crisp accentless english. “You must come to visit me sometime, Claire.” She smiled genuinely to Claire, hugging her.
Although, there were few people who were like Luna Queen Yae-ji who didn’t care that she turned out to be human, a large majority of the guests shot her hostile looks.
Claire couldn’t ignore it no matter how hard she tried and barely twenty minutes into her engagement party, she already wanted to leave.
Lukas on the other hand doesn’t seem to notice this and he makes sure to complete a tour of the ballroom with her on his arm.
Claire couldn’t take any more so she excused herself to get a drink, Lukas seemed like he wanted to protest but then he was distracted by a guest seeking his attention.
Claire could finally breathe after she ran off to a corner of the ballroom, it no longer felt like hundreds of eyes were on her, judging her every move. She signaled a waiter to hand her a drink and as the uniformed waiter briskly walked over, he was intercepted.
Roman Bancroft was dressed in a snow white three piece suit, with gold thread embroidered into it, and a matching crown on his head. “Let me get that for you,” He picked up the champagne glass from the waiter’s tray and walked over to her. “Luna Queen… Claire.”
Claire’s eyes widened at his presence, they had run into him earlier as the entire ballroom approached them to say their congratulations. She remembered him when they met in person again, as the person that had foiled her first escape plan.
“A-Alpha King Roman.” She murmured, still wary of him. She had her eyes fixed on him as he walked closer. “You didn’t have to bother with that.”
“On the contrary, Claire,” He smiled smoothly, offering her the glass. “I’m honored to.”
“Thank you,” Claire said in a small voice, reaching for the glass. She didn’t get far because someone caught her hand to stop her.
“I’ll get my mate a drink myself, Roman.” Lukas’ frigidly interrupted.
