Chapter Sixty-one
Killian didn’t back down, “I’m merely having a conversation with a human in your territory.” He said in a dark voice. “I’m afraid that you’re impeding my authority.”
Claire quickly spoke up when it looked like Lukas was about to break Killian’s nose for his words. “I think there’s a misunderstanding here…”
“There’s not.” Lukas and Killian said simultaneously, still shooting each other dark glares.
Claire had to quickly neutralize the situation before it escalated into something unsalvageable. “Why don’t we move this conversation inside? I’m sure you’ll both be more inclined to talk over drinks.”
"There's nothing to talk about, if you have something to discuss then schedule another meeting." Lukas decided coldly, "My mate is not required to come for said meeting." He added when Killian started to speak.
Killian held back his words, turning to look to Claire instead with hopeful expectancy in his eyes.
Claire’s mind was already made up, if she wanted to leave Lukas, she would do it on her own terms. Handing him over to the Human Government to do as they saw fit was not her style, not to mention that it was difficult to picture Lukas being hurt for her sake - she couldn't bear it.
Sure he was an asshole but even when he held her prisoner, her always treated her well.
She was merely looking for petty revenge, she wasn't going to make Lukas lose everything and potentially end up somewhere dangerous.
She turned around and walked off in the direction of the mansion, she needed to hide away in her room.
Claire didn’t even want to have to deal with college work again. She wanted to visit her parents. She wanted the life Lukas took from her.
She didn't bother returning to her office, instead sending a message to Rosie that she wanted to take a nap before heading straight to her bedroom.
Maybe all she needed to ground her was a talk with her parents, she should give them a call.
She hadn't spoken to them ever since they left the city to return to Lockwood. It had just been three days since they left but so much had happened that it felt like forever.
Claire tiredly got on the huge bed and sat cross-legged at the middle, then she brought out her phone and scrolled to find her mom's number.

Outside the mansion, Lukas and Killian still stood opposite each other, tense and coldly appraising each other.
"Let go of Claire." Killian bit out, his eyes flashing.
His words struck a nerve deep in Lukas that it was a struggle to bring his emotions under control. That was a sensitive topic because it was the one thing he would never do.
"I'm not holding her captive." He said smoothly, his own words burning a hole through his tongue. "I don't appreciate you throwing accusations around either."
Killian scoffed, clearly not believing Lukas. He knew that he was taking this too far and could face repercussions for this but it was his duty to protect humans regardless of their allegiance, at least that was what he kept telling himself.
He tried not to look to deeply at the fact that he wouldn't do this if it were anyone else but Claire.
Killian wished that he hadn't been out of the country during their engagement ball, then he might have caught onto it earlier and maybe he would have been able to save Claire from the claws of a beast.
He sighed and backed away, "This isn't the end of this, Lukas." He said, a threat hanging off his words.
"It will be the end of you if you don't stop hounding my fiancée." Lukas met him toe to toe with calm fury in his dark blue eyes.
Killian turned around and walked back to his car, he knew that trying to call Claire would be futile so he was already making plans on ways he would get to see her again.
Lukas tongued the inside of his cheek as he watched Killian drive out of the gates which were opened for him in a hurry. He was a swirling bubble of several strong emotions.
Somehow, guilt was the strongest of them because how he felt about Killian and the situation at hand was nothing compared to how he felt about Claire.
A voice behind him made him turn his head to the side to see Alec walking up. His Viceroy looked grim and Lukas was sure that he was sporting a similar expression.
"This is going to pose a lot of problems." He noted, looking tense. "Do you want me to keep an eye on him?" He asked Lukas as the tall gates were shut.
"Killian is ex-military, he'll know right away if we try to put a bug on him." Lukas muttered, looking deep in thought. "I'm not giving him ammo to use against us." He turned around and swept into the mansion without another word.
Alec watched him go with a concerned expression. This was a really delicate time for Lukas to have a disagreement with the Emissary from the Ministry of Human-Were Inter-relations.
Any moment from now, there might be another attack by the Rogues troubling the boundaries of the country. Lukas could get rid of them in one move but he cared too much for his people and was trying to reach an agreement with the Rogues.
They couldn't risk any heat from Killian at such a delicate time or everything could very well fall apart in their hands.
He had wanted to give Lukas an update on what was going on, only to come out to find Lukas and Killian locked in a death stare.
Alec had only caught the tail end of their conversation but that was enough for him to piece it all together. He had let Lukas go although he had information for his Alpha King, he just knew instinctively that this was a very bad time.
Lukas walked through the hallways on autopilot, he had no idea where he was going, his body seeming to move on its own.
He only stopped when he got to his shared bedroom with Claire. He knew for sure that Claire was inside the room, it was the reason his body had come straight here like there was a red string connecting them.
He also noticed that he no longer referred to it as his bedroom and instead called it theirs... *What the fuck was he doing?*
