Chapter Eighteen
After dinner, Claire was escorted by Lukas back to the lavish private suite that had become her very own personal prison. Bodyguards stood at alert outside the room, pretending not to pay attention to what was going on.
“Goodnight, little human.” Lukas whispered softly to her, kissing her forehead. “Don’t do anything dumb.”
Claire stepped back and fought the urge to wipe away the imprint of his warm lips. To outsiders, it seemed like Lukas was infatuated with her but only she knew what he was truly like.
“Goodnight, Lukas.” She muttered coldly, slamming the door in his face.
When the door was closed, Claire could finally let down her defenses. She was still dressed in her midnight blue dinner gown, it was cut really low down her back, thin straps criss-crossing over her bare skin.
Lukas had had his arm around her the entire journey back like he expected her to break out into a run right then and there. Claire wouldn’t say she didn’t entertain the thought multiple times but the possesive grip that Lukas had around her partially bare waist was enough to dissuade her each time.
She took off her shoes as she walked inside the room, taking off her dress too just to be comfortable when she laid on the bed, she had to intention of falling asleep. A few minutes later, she was wrapped in the sheets, wearing nothing but a silk robe and staring up at the elaborate ceiling.
*‘Engagement ball?’*
Surely Lukas had to be playing a cruel joke on her. He absolutely despised her, why would he want to get married to her? She was his greatest disappointment and a shame to him, why would he want the rest of the world to know about her?
A week ago, Claire didn’t even believe in Fated mates, yet here she was, her entire life turned upside down for that very reason.
She brought out her phone and stared at the bright screen, she wanted to talk to someone but there was no one to talk to. If she tried to call her mom, she would break down and just tell her everything.
She also didn’t feel like it was right to call Rachel. Sure, she was childhood friends with Rachel but she was still very human, and she had also turned out to be the human mate of Rachel’s werewolf King. Claire was starting to learn that she had more enemies than just Lukas, she couldn’t trust any werewolf, not just their King.
She feared that after she was taken to the city, she would become too deeply entangled with werewolves to just stand up and walk away. It was why she would prefer to escape tonight if she could but that would be next to impossible.
After the first time she tried to escape, Lukas had stopped placing guards to watch over her, instead, she was locked up in the suite. It remained the same way even when she tried to escape the second time.
But now, in addition to being locked up inside the suite, she was certain he had left guards outrside the door too. Did Lukas really think that she would try to escape again? Because he was absolutely right and he had given her the perfect chance.
The closet in the private suite had been stocked with clothes for Claire and although, she usually avoided wearing them, preferring instead to wear nothing but the hotel robes, she would be wearing some tonight because she had thought up a possible plan to escape.
If there were guards on the other side of the door, it meant that they had to have the key to the door or possibly be able to get the key for her, that was all she needed. This time, she wouldn’t try to escape quietly, she didn’t care if she had to hijack a car, she would make absolute sure that her escape plan worked this time.
So she got up and changed out of the hotel robes, with a determination to get away from Lukas for good this time. Although, Lukas was well aware that she didn’t wear any of the clothes he got her, the only exceptions being the times he invited her to eat with him, he had the closet filled to the brim with expensive clothes.
Claire was feeling very spontaneous so she changed into the last thing she would ever imagine herself wearing. Bum shorts and a fitted, cropped tank top. She threw on a jacket as well to protect herself from the night chill, wearing fashionable boots to top it all off.
The outfit she chose matched her rebellious mood, she wasn’t going to just sit by and take whatever Lukas had to dish out. This was very new for Claire because she had never had to fight for herself before, she was always nice and quiet so she never really got into troublesome situations.
She had left the silver choker on previously but after getting dressed to escape, she resolutely took it off and tossed it on the dresser. She would never trust Lukas because she knew that it would cost her dearly.
She also left her phone behind, Lukas had it with him for quite a while, there was no doubt that he had already tampered with it. She wasn’t giving him any chance to foil her escape plans again.
When she was all set, she walked up to the door and knocked confidently, expecting a response for the bodyguards assigned to watch over her. After knocking a handful of times and getting no response, Claire frustratedly tried the handle, her eyes widening when it opened up.
She stumbled and nearly lost her balance when it did because she had been expecting the door to be locked as usual. She had already lost all hope of escaping, of course, Lukas wouldn’t let her have any bodyguards anymore, considering that she always got past all of them.
Claire was just about to give up and cry herself to sleep when in her frustration, she tried the door handle, the mechanism giving in with ease.
She gaped when this happened, staring into an empty hallway. Not only had the suite door not been locked up, there were also no bodyguards to be found outside her door. It was almost like Lukas was encouraging her to try to run away…
*It had to be a trap!*
