Chapter Twenty-six
Claire blinked in shock. “What?!”
Senite looked a tad sheepish. “Well, humans were the first to begin this and to protect our interests, werewolves enforced it.” She gestured with her hands. “I’m certain that even with that unspoken rule in place, there are several werewolves and humans who still fall in love regardless.”
Claire couldn’t recover from the shock this gave her. She had been expecting to be met with a very violent refusal from everyone close to Lukas, especially from his very strict aunt.
*‘Did that mean that getting married to Lukas was truly inevitable?’*
“I think you’re such a nice and sweet lady that everyone will take to you right away.” Senite gave her a genuine smile, the age lines in her face making her look even more beautiful.
B-But this wasn’t what Claire wanted, it was nice to be treated well but at this rate she would never be free from Lukas. It didn’t matter how nicely they treated her, they were never the problem, it had always been Lukas.
She couldn’t say anything that would upset Senite though, she just couldn’t. “Thank you.” She said sincerely because without even realizing it, she desperately needed someone to be genuinely kind to her.
For the past week, Claire had been under a lot of pressure and she had no one to rely on but now it felt like a weight had been taken off her shoulders.
“Great, this was a good talk.” Senite beamed, looking proud of herself. “Don’t hesitate to come find me if you need to talk, I’ll also knock some sense into Lukas, how dare he treat his Fated mate so terribly?”
Claire was filled with an irresistible urge to laugh, she could only imagine Senite literally smacking Lukas. She appreciated the effort but there was no saving what she and Lukas had, it was incredibly toxic and eventually one or both of them would snap. She knew how to handle him though but there were moments he was a little too much for her.
“I noticed this when you first stepped in but I didn’t get the chance to mention it yet, that necklace you have on...” Senite spoke up, staring intently at Claire. “...Did Lukas give it to you?”
Claire looked at the necklace for the first time, it was a simple silver chain with a crescent moon pendant. She gently tugged on the little silver crescent moon, feeling sentimental for some reason. “Yes, he did.” She answered softly, looking up at Senite when she did.
She didn’t expect the older woman to look as pale as a ghost. “A-Are you sure?” She stuttered slightly.
Claire got slightly anxious, was something wrong with the necklace? “Yes, I am. Is something the matter?” She asked, giving into her curiosity.
Senite pulled herself together, apologizing distractedly. “I’m sorry, it’s just that... that was Lukas’ mother’s necklace.” She looked away, sadness carved into the lines on her face. “I just never… he never let anyone even see it… so- so for him to give it to you…” She trailed off, seeming to get even more unsettled.
Claire could only stare in disbelief, from Senite’s actions, it was clear that the necklace really held a lot of value, she couldn’t believe that Lukas had given it to her. She also felt a spark of guilt at how she had treated this gift when it was offered to her.
Senite let out a small laugh, her eyes gleaming from tears. “I didn’t have to be worried about anything then.” She shook her head, talking more to herself than Claire. “Pardon his hard-headedness, he’ll come around sooner than you think.” She got to her feet to take one of Claire’s hands, sandwiching it between both of hers.
Claire didn’t agree but she didn’t try to change Senite’s mind. The necklace had stunned her more than it had stunned Senite but she didn’t believe that Lukas would become truly tender and loving to her for that reason. He probably did it because he guessed his aunt would mention it, it was all a ploy to wreck her further.
“Alright! Enough dallying, we need to get started on the preparations, there’s so much to be done.” She started bustling, helping Claire to her feet and hurrying her out the door. “I’m certain that Lola would be the one handling the preparations, that’s her forte.” Senite said conversationally as she led the way back to the master bedroom Claire would be sharing with Lukas from now on.
Lola in question was a pretty and curvy dark skinned lady who rocked formal pants beautifully. She had a clipboard in her hand and was patiently waiting outside the bedroom for Claire.
“Lola! How wonderful is it to find you here!” Senite beamed. “Meet our beloved future Luna Queen, Claire.” She gestured in Claire’s direction, smiling at the little wave that the sweet human did. “Claire, meet Lola, she’ll be assisting you with all that you need to get ready for your engagement ball.”
Lola stared outrightly, she had heard rumors but she didn’t believe it until she saw it with her own two eyes, Alpha King Lukas had really gotten a human mate!
Claire was nervous at how intently Lola was staring at her, was there a vibe check she had to pass? What if she failed to?
Lola abruptly jumped on her and pulled her into a cozy hug. “Oh my goodness, you’re so pretty.” She tittered, leaning back to get a better look at Claire, tears forming in her eyes. “I’m so happy that Alpha Lukas finally found his Fated mate, we were all so worried that he would end up all alone because of that.”
Claire was genuinely caught off guard by this reaction, she hadn’t exactly been welcomed back at the resort so she had been expecting the same treatment here so she was very surprised to see the women being very kind to her.
“T-Thank you.” She smiled, welcoming the hug. She was the type to treat people the way they treated her, it was a basic moral of hers, something that her parents taught her when she was just a little girl.
“Let’s move to the receiving room on the second floor, we’ve got work to do!” Senite interrupted them, urging the two young ladies to follow her.
