Chapter Fifty-eight

After a lighthearted dinner with Rosie, Claire left her room to meet up with Senite. The older lady had sounded a bit concerned when Claire had mentioned that she wanted to speak to her.
They would be meeting at her cozy reading room, Claire was Certain that Senite was already waiting there for her so she picked up the pace.
She knocked gingerly on the door, a soft invitation from the interior making her push open the door.
“I hope I’m not bothering you,” Claire said sheepishly, softly stepping into the lovely room. She took off her shoes as most of the room was covered in plush rugs that also served as seats, it wouldn't do for her to dirty it with her shoes.
Senite waved away her concerns, “It's no problem, I’m always happy to talk. Why don’t you come sit next to me?” She offered, patting the space beside her on the sofa she was sitting on.
Claire joined her at her request sitting cross-legged on the sofa.
Before she could speak, Senite rose to her feet. “Would you like something to drink? I had a mini fridge installed here so you can make a choice.”
Claire hesitated, she didn’t particularly want anything to drink but she didn’t want to turn Senite down. “Um, do you have soda?”
Senite beamed, “I don’t drink it myself but I stocked up on it just in case,” She said happily, returning to the sofa with the drink in hand.
Claire gratefully took the drink, “I wanted to ask you something important.”
Senite paled at this, making Claire concerned for her.
“Are… Are you alright?” Claire asked with worry in her eyes, dropping her drink on a side table.
“I’m fine, I’m fine, don’t worry about me.” Senite was quick to reassure her, “What was it you wanted to talk to me about?”
Claire laced her fingers feeling a bit silly for asking a question like this, what if Senite laughed it off and said it was unimportant? She had gotten her information from someone like Alina after all, she wasn’t exactly a trustworthy source.
Senite on the other hand got more nervous the longer Claire hesitated, she was aware that Lukas had moved out of their shared room long before their engagement ball and she feared that the sweet human had finally had enough of her annoying nephew and was planning on leaving him.
She had been a bit hopeful the day after their engagement ball but her hopes had been dashed to the ground not long after.
“Um… the other day Alina was around and she mentioned something about marking, do you know anything about that?” Claire finally forced out.
Senite froze in shock, that was all Claire wanted to know? She wasn’t leaving Lukas? Wonderful!
“Yes I do, werewolves tend to be secretive about these things so it’s understandable that you wouldn't know.” She said with a relieved smile which hid her anger at Lukas for marking his mate and not even telling her a single thing about it.
Maybe hitting her nephew would smack some sense into him? Because Senite wouldn’t hesitate to run him over with her car even he so much as hurt Claire.
“Male werewolves tend to mark their mates as a sign of possession. I’m not sure how it is with humans because most werewolves who get together with humans abstain from marking their mates.” Senite kindly gave an explanation.
“Although with female werewolves, it feels very pleasurable and is a sign of status, it also fades to a silvery scar due to a compound in male werewolves saliva.”
Claire listened with growing horror, Senite had practically said word for word what happened to her when Lukas’ *‘marked’* her, but she wasn’t a werewolf.
“Are you sure that doesn’t happen with humans too?” She asked nervously.
Senite frowned, “I’m sure I would have heard about it if it did, maybe it has something to do with you being his fated mate.” She added, smiling again.
All Senite was waiting impatiently for, was for Claire to get pregnant, she hoped that it would bring Lukas around. Also, Lukas aside, she really wanted a grandnephew or grandniece to shower her attention on.
She was a bit worried though that Claire wasn’t ready to be pregnant. She let her eyes trail to the marks on her neck, at this rate, Claire might already be pregnant.
“Oh…” Claire trailed off, the reason she had gotten into this situation in the first place was because Lukas claimed that she was his fated mate.
“Does that happen often?” She found herself asking, “Humans being the fated mates of werewolves?”
“Not to alarm you but this is the first I’ve ever heard of it, I previously didn’t even think it was possible.” Senite said honestly, raising a hand to her jaw. “Or maybe you have some werewolf blood running in your veins, you could ask your parents.”
Claire brightened up at this, that certainly made more sense than sheer coincidence. Her glow faded away shortly after, she wondered if Lukas would treat her differently if he found out that she had ancestral ties to a werewolf.
“You know what, I don’t think it’s that important.” She said with a heavy expression, rising to her feet. “Thank you for the talk, Senite, I should probably let you get some rest.”
Senite was about to say something but then thought better of it, she had seen the broken look in Claire’s eyes and she could guess who was behind it. She sighed softly, wondering just what she should do about her hard headed nephew.
“Goodnight, Claire.”
Claire straightened up after puting her shoes back on, a weary smile on her face. “Goodnight, Senite.”
Claire slowly trudged back to her empty bedroom. She had no idea why she suddenly felt drained, maybe it was the day she had finally catching up to her.
It would do her good to go to bed early, she had to work hard to catch up on what college work she missed out on.
