Chapter Sixty-six

Lukas had to leave the mansion early because he had to make a trip, he had hardly slept so it wasn’t difficult to. Alec had set up a meeting with the Rogues in no time, Lukas could only marvel at how efficient his Viceroy was.
So he was currently traveling to Pine Creek, a town on the other side of Silverfall. The trip would take a little over three hours and their meeting was by noon, so he had set out very early to have enough time to prepare to meet them.
The Rogues’ base wasn’t at Pine Creek, it was merely a meeting point. Even Alec had a difficult time tracking down where their base of operations was, they had their shortcomings but they were exceptionally good at hiding.
The meeting point was a random motel on the outskirts of Pine Creek, Alec had already checked out the place ahead of the trip.
Lukas didn’t go with an entourage much to Alec’s disapproval, he didn’t want to draw attention to himself so he went in a single car with three bodyguards. The one in the driver’s seat and the two in the back seat, Lukas himself sat at the passenger side.
Lukas couldn’t fault Alec this time, the Rogues did indeed have it out for him, he needed to be more careful. But it was why he couldn’t order the Rogues to be wiped out, they didn’t intend to kill him and had no grudge with him personally, they just didn’t approve of the things he did.
So it was merely a disagreement between the two sides, at least that was what Lukas chose to see it as.
The Rogues plaguing his country were a handful of werewolves who didn’t approve of Lukas conceding to human control without a fight. They expected Lukas at the very least to fight back against the decree to confine werewolves to designated areas, like they were animals to be contained.
They had put their hopes in Lukas who was the last direct descendant of one of the powerful ancient werewolf families, and had felt betrayed when he accepted the decree. That was when they had come together to form a ragtag group of bandits trying to lead a revolution.
Their plan was to take over the control of the so-called American werewolf settlement so that they could properly rebel against humans.
Their uprising would have been a much bigger deal than it currently was but Lukas always seemed to be one step ahead of them. He either tried to dissuade them from staging a protest-attack or sent men to the venue and tried to neutralize the situation.
Their existence was also hidden from the media, no matter what methods they used to draw attention, Lukas had made sure of that.
It had been a game of tug-of-war between the two sides, an endless game at that. So while the Rogues were well aware that Lukas wanted to meet up with them to dissuade them from staging an attack on one of the hotels of a human run hotel chain in Silverfall, they still accepted to meet up with him.
The motel was shoddy and rundown, it was on an off path from the one that led into the town, Pine Creek. The path in question was dirtpacked which made for a bumpy ride.
Lukas ordered two of the bodyguards to remain in the car, going inside the motel with just a single bodyguard. He was just there for a talk, not to declare war.
A grimy werewolf with a beer gut stood behind the counter, he wore a plaid shirt that didn’t quite cover his protruding stomach, his hairline receding.
There was a diner on the ground floor of the motel and it was completely empty save for the table at the extreme end, where a suspicious-looking man quietly drank from a can of beer. He wore a black hoodie with the hood put up, a pair of sunglasses on his face to hide his face.
Lukas ignored him and walked straight to the counter, he also had sunglasses and a hat on to hide his identity so he was in no place to judge.
“I’d like to book a room for the day.” He said calmly, putting down a black card and sliding it in the counter clerk’s direction.
The grimy guy behind the counter looked from Lukas to the black card on the counter top in between them. “Sure thing.” He mumbled, pushing the card back over to Lukas. “We only take cash though.”
“Of course,” Lukas smoothly accepted, pulling out a hundred dollar bill. “Keep the change.” He nodded to him.
The counter clerk didn’t even bat an eye at this, quickly stowing away the money like he expected Lukas to change his mind. He pulled out a drawer on the other side of the counter and searched through it, there was a tell tale clinking of keys against each other.
He pulled out a bunch of keys with a tag attached to it and slide it across the counter to Lukas, “Your room’s number is on the tag. The diner opens at 2 pm and closes at 9 pm. If you need anything, I’ll probably be behind the counter.” He listed out.
Lukas hardly listened to what the counter clerk had to say, if the meeting went well, he would be out of the motel long before the diner opened for the day.
“Sure.” He said dryly, picking up the key. He noted that the counter clerk didn’t bother taking any documentation, which shouldn’t be surprising considering how badly run the place was.
“I’m Grey, if anyone comes looking for me, send them up to my room.” He tagged on, already heading for the stairs.
“Sure thing.” The counter clerk’s voice trailed after him.
The bodyguard that had been silently standing beside Lukas all this time pulled out a gun from inside his jacket and hurried up the stairs with the weapon drawn. He had to be on guard although the motel had already been checked out before they arrived, he was currently responsible for the Alpha King’s safety so he was extra cautious.
Lukas didn’t think it was necessary because he trusted that the Rogues wouldn’t use underhanded methods. Not to mention, they didn’t want to kill him, they just wanted his position.
