Run together

RENEE'S POV

Men! Such fools. I didn't even want to know what Bane was doing to get some answers. I cringed before I slipped out of his arms.
"Look who would like to know? The man who allowed me to go." My arms crossed.

"I thought you would want to go Renee." He kicked out of his shoes before he grabbed the television remote. Another excuse. This man rarely even watched television unless a game was on. "You thought wrong." I reached for the remote control.

On instinct he grabbed my hand, his grip tightened as his eyes scanned over my bare hand. "What?"
"Where is your ring?" He seemed concerned, almost displeased. "Safely in my jewelry box." I snatched my hand out of his hold.
"Why is it not on your finger?" He pressed.

"Why would I wear it to the gym?"
"Why wouldn't you?" He stood up. Steam pushed from his frame. "Because it is pointless."
"I. Don't. Care." His arm slithered around my aching waist.

Oh I get it. This was not about me wearing my engagement ring out. It was about where I was requested to wear my ring. The Avalanche gym. Where other males were. Where he was.

"You are ridiculous." My eyebrow arched. "Does he need to see it? Territorial much?"
"You knew I was when we first started this." A venomous smile stretched across his face as his eyes changed from their normal soft warm color. They were darker. It was as if drops of ink had touched them, taking away their green and replacing it with dark tar.

"Don't do that." I begged for him to settle down.."Do what?"
"That. Your eyes." They were my poison. My knee weakening, spine tingling, and lip licking poison. "I just got back from the gym and my body-"

"I can make you feel so much better." He promised. "I will be gentle."
"You don't know what gentle is." Lately, gentle has never been in our agenda and with my body clutching to life, I knew a little of him would take a large amount of life from me.

His lips pressed against mine. His fingers ran through each strand of hair as ours lips danced in sync. He deepened it, pushing until I was left to willow away in his hold. I needed him. His hold. His passion. His sweet love. All was so sweet until he pulled away from me. That tempting darkness in his eyes had brightened until it found some color.

"What's wrong?" My hand placed on his broad chest. "I-" He sighed heavily. "Some more problems."
"Problems?" I questioned eagerly, hoping it was no bad news in regards to my mother. "Nothing extreme." Warm fingers clutched mine. "The site in town. One of the mills went again."

"Oh." I tugged at his shirt. "Can't Bane or Zeiden or somebody else go?"
"That's like sending a kid." His nostrils flared. He tied the laces up to his boots. "An hour, two hours tops."
I nodded. He left a soft kiss against my forehead before he left the room, leaving me in a box of thoughts and visions. It was the only time I was forced to hear my thoughts, listen to them scream to me about how I have failed the people around me.

I sat on the floor, my eyes unfocused as I thought of my mother....I eyed the jewelry box with a quirky grin on my face.
The ring was missing so I know she had taken it with her to the gym.

I closed the drawer, shoving my cellular phone into my pocket before I left the room.
"Going somewhere?" Bane was leaning against the banister at the bottom of the stairway. He popped up when he saw me coming down the staircase.

"Is that your business?"
He seemed to be questioning himself, wondering if he even had any authority to question me. He didn't. No one did. Well, except for one. Her.

"Where you going?" Bane followed me over to the front door. "For a run." I opened the door, allowing fresh air to pour into the opening.
"Wolf form?" "No."
"Do you mind if I join?" Bane pressed. I snarled.

"What do you want Bane?" My arms folded.
"I just want to spend time with you." Renee teased. He was a damn fool and by the way he was laughing, he knew it. I wanted to be alone however, I'm not sure if it was the best idea to actually be alone.

I have been roaming in secret. I have kept my travels under the radar. I have been doing it all on my own, keeping my agenda on the low for some days now.
"Bane." I eyed his quirky grin. "You can come...if you can keep up."

He half smiled. He was fast however keeping up with me was definitely a challenge for him. By the look on his face, he knew it was a challenge yet I could tell that he was up for the task.
I took off running. Speed and agility was my goal. I whisked passed hung trees and thick marsh, swiping pass leaves and branches that snapped from their base. Wind whistled passed my ear. Cool air nipped at my heated flesh.

Time seemed to slow as I took leave. My mind was so taken by nature's gift that I had almost forgotten that there was someone who was running behind me. He was quick yet not quick enough.

I was increasing the gap between him and me. Soon, even the scent of me would fade from existence. My trail would go cold. He would be following nothing but a thought of me. I wanted nothing more than to mess with Renee, lead him on a wild goose chase.

However, I needed his company, even despite my inner monster that wanted to move solo. I decided to slow down, leaving him time to catch up with me.

"Why did you slow down?" Renee was heaving for air. His nostrils flared as he struggled to pull in a much needed breath. "I was catching up." I spoke.
